What old school pcb has infinite replay value?

When I was about 13 or 14, I would go to a laundry mat near my house after school. In there, they had about three or four cabinets. One of them, was Gyruss. I remember playing that game for the first time and loved the soundtrack-- I was hooked. Everyday after school I would go there and spend any money I had; when I was broke, I would beg my mother for money.

I recently had the chance to go back to the same laundry mat because of a family reunion of sorts. I looked in, and no cabinets:confused: So, i decided that I'm gonna look for the pcb.

For you, what old school game has infinite replay value, no matter how low- tech it is?

Ghouls' and Ghosts was always a top arcade favorite of mine, that I could spend quarter after quarter on, trying to memorize the game

Have the full series of games on home consoles, and I still say they can be played anytime, with no loss in entertainment value

Jackal/Top Gunner is one of the oldest boards in my collection and a childhood favorite of mine that I'll never tire of. The music, graphics and gameplay still hold up over 20 years later and are still just as good.

big +1 ...

If I had to pick something not so 'old school', my current addiction is Rushing Heroes (preparing to someday go out and visit Xian Xi and have a RH match :) ).

But staying on topic (and thus not throwing Guwange out there), I would have to say that Top Gunner and TMNT are the ones that get the most play right now of my older boards. I would also have to add to the list Tiger Road and Tecmo Knight. Aurail and shinobi might get added to the list soon, but I still haven't made a system16 adaptor.

I think my oldest PCB has to be Raiden. Raiden never goes out of style and it never feels old, it still hard as nails and the music still has that kind of sad dynamic feel to it. Seibu really kicked ass with that release.

Ninja Spirit is one of the greatest games ever made IMO, that's what really put Irem on the map for me and is sad to know that only the PCE got a port, what's even crazier is that the PCB sells for over 300 dollars to this day, that's if you even have a chance of getting a hold of one at all.

Gradius is just the shit! Konami at its best, I don't think I have to even explain how excellent and influential gradius was and still is.

Galaga needs no justification to be in anyone's top list, the game's still as fun as the first day you played it.

The rest are just memorable games that I can play to this day with the same intensity I did back in the day.

Outrun
Afterburner
Pole Position
Virtua Racing
Double Dragon
Dig Dug
Donkey Kong
Ms. Pac-Man
X-Men
TMNT

+1, on Ghouls 'N Ghosts, picked this PCB up back in December. Fun as hell, would love to get a Ghosts 'N Goblins cab one of these days, and build my Ghouls 'N Ghosts cab as well.

QFT - I finally was able to get my hands on one of these PCBs. What a fantastic game, so much harder than the PCE port. I have yet to beat the 'cave of farts', but I am working on it. Think I will give it another go tonight :D
Another cool feature of this PCB is that it has pause. Nice to be able to pause and collect myself before getting beaten down in the cave o' farts, Again.

For me, Speed Rumbler is my oldest game that still holds alot of replay value. It can be had cheap and is loads of fun. It is a vert game though.

I always die in the cave too! Once I pass the "farts" the abyss of ninjas is just too damn hard! I must of tried at least a million times by now and that's still my tragic point, somewhere along the middle I panic, like you know when you're doing good but can't believe it and then BAM!...yes you were doing too good dumbass! ruffles!

Fucking unbelieveable game man! I didn't know you could pause, would you please enlighten me?

Most True Classics (or as you call them Old School) have infinite replay value. Mostly because they are points based (as opposed to acheivments). Playing them doesn't feel like a chore (see shumps, fighters and Beatemups)

Pacman
Ms. pacman
Mr. Do!
Donkey Kong
Galaga
Arkanoid*
Gun Smoke*
Millipede/Centipede

*I know you can continue on Arkanoid, so it sometimes does feel more like a chore. But the first levels are fun too!. You can also continue on Gunsmoke, but with the eventual loss of powerups, it takes the sting out of things.

To pause you need to have a DIP turned on

Dip Switch Set #2
Switch #6

When this is turned on - you can pause by pressing 2 Player start. To unpause, press 1 Player start. This also works on R-Type and I assume any other Irem game based on this board (Mr. Heli??)

1942. Not strikers, just plain old 1942. Grew up in the middle of nowhere Maine, and the laundramat had it. Sometimes I'd bike the couple miles just to play it for the afternoon... God I love that game..

There's so many games in this category, it's hard to really choose one or even a few since I'm almost exclusively an old-school player. A few that stand out for me are 1943: The Battle of Midway, Sinistar (I remember when I broke a million on it for a contest only to find out the contest ended 3 days earlier), Gauntlet (first game I stayed on over 24 hours on a single credit), Psycho Soldier (end boss is very unforgiving in it), Pole Positions 1 and 2 and for the most part, most early Sega driving games (though the sit-down Enduro Racer was tops in my book)...damn, I could list on forever but I do miss one thing about the classics: it's all about the HIGH SCORE! I miss games that no longer use a scoring system.

Turtles in Time. Not the first one because it's a heartless coin-sucker that gives you very little opportunity to improve.

I really get bored playing 1942/1943.... By the time I complete them, I don't want to play them again for a long, long time.

Great games for their time...

I agree, I didn't know how big the genre was when I was playing Raiden, it wasn't until the release of Layer Section for the US saturn (galactick attack) that I found out there was a good size following and selection for tated games.

Thanks a bunch, I'll try that out next time I play it.
