New game blues

So today I got in both my copy of Shock Troopers 2 and Magician Lord, all excited I ran to my 1-slot to try them out, and when either is inserted I just get to a test menu. Starts off with a grid, then red blue green and white squares, then button testing, then time/date, it just cycles through them when I press start. Thinking maybe it was my board I put Slug X back in, and it works fine... Any ideas?

Clean those guys!!! Take some alcohol to them with a q-tip a couple of times each edge, and then let them dry completely.

*phew* I was hoping it would be something that simple... I feared for a bit worse.

EDIT: Cleaned, waiting for them to dry.
