I just don't get how someone could not like MS3. I have my gripes with it but overall its a fucking blast to play. There's just so much shit going on that I think it is physically impossible to get bored with it. There's always a new challenge. MS1 is still my favorite for sentimental reasons, but MS3 is the apex of the series.

3 felt like a chore after a while.

1 is perfection.

1 > All other Slugs

I'd probably play X/2/3 more often nowadays just because of the amount of time I've put into the first one, but it's still the best.

Only way SNK can top it is to back to the drawing board and really revitalize the series:

1) Militaristic feel, get rid of a lot of the weird/slow enemies
2) Contra style true diagonal shooting for power up weapons
3) Hard Corps type storyline with true branching paths
4) Individual abilities that make sense and really work for all characters, perhaps even unique weapons for each
5) Just bring it back to the old-school, a bit more simple and straight forward, with background that just wow without having to involve weirdness

Sincerely,

Mikhail

I always kept thinking "can it get anymore epic" and then it does.

Yeah, that's how I felt about it my first time through. On a gameplay standpoint I find it tedious and overly hard sometimes, but the overall presentation and conclusion to the story arc begun in 1. It's not my favorite Slug (2/X are fighting for that spot), but GODDAMN what a fucking epic way to end the original run. :buttrock:

I'd say slug 3 is the best Metal Slug for 2 player action.
It can be long with one player, but it is still my favorite. Fucking crabs

hm.
well.
I think 1 is great for what the series was meant to be.
a military shooter.
ms3 didn't get crazy all of a sudden,
it evolved to that.
I appreciate 1, but i like the general wackiness
that 3 avalanched into. branching paths that gave the game
replay-ability and it didn't take itself serious.
the game goes on to excess at some parts like the overhead shooter parts in the rocket
and well. the last level in general, but to me it's the cherry on top to metal slug fans.
i mean crap.
zombies and shit?
you can't beat that.

btw. favorite slug is 2.

I saw a new copy of Retro Gamer at Barnes & Noble yesterday, I picked it up, read through it briefly, then put it back because while I have a problem with paying $12 for a game mag --its worse when their editor states such embarrassing mistruths and won't own up for himself, let alone the immature actions of someone who reflects his own organization.

Fucking excatly right.

Reasons I hate 3

Way to fucking long
Shit takes forever to die
I hate the whole zombie / alien shit < yes it happened before this but this game just pushes it over the top and it makes it ridiculous to the max

2 is my fave Slug, 1 is the best, 3 is a graphical masterpiece but too far away from the original formula, X plays very well too, 4 I like for the medal scoring system, and that's it for me.

The series went kinda downhill after 3 because the dev'ers lost that military parody feeling. When I played Slug 1 for the first time, I thought it would be a video game version of the hilarious Sturmtruppen comics by Italian-born artist Bonvi that I used to enjoy when I was in school... Slug 1's cartoonish gore and attention-to-detail is simply amazing, just like the simple but flawless gameplay... then SNK obviously felt that it's time for something new and came up with with aliens and zombies and all that crap which culminated in Slug 3's over the top outer space monster madness. 3 was like a parody of a parody and IMO slightly too much to stomach for some fans who wanted something more straight forward and less zany.

But well... I can't really hate Slug 3, it not only plays well (apart from the multi-hit enemy problem and the other points mentioned above) but also contains some of the best sprite design and animations ever seen in a 2D game, and it doesn't take a graphics whore to see that. Yet good looks aren't everything...

That was my other problem with the game: too many fantastical/non-military or alien enemies. Yetis, WTF :oh_no:

Also, that Aztec god boss or whatever can SUCK MY FUCKING BALLS...god damn do I hate that thing, even on Easy.

He's easy as balls up to MVS settings.

it's just a matter of strategy and learning some patterns.

I usually don't shoot at him until I get myself fully loaded with laser gun ammo that the p.o.w.'s drops.
After that, it'll be mostly fire til he dies. If you're lucky enough, he'll attack you more with the red beams instead of the golden shower.

Red beams are worse.

I can dodge the golden shower "lol" (I wouldn't dodge yours Atro )

And the easy strategy for the "wipeout" beam is to just stay on the side of the ledge - it can't hit you.

The wolves are easy to dodge as well.

That doesnt mean I don't die 4 times.

I actually like 3 not only for the game's difficulty, but for the simple fact that I also like the overall limitless possibilities of finishing the game. I do agree that after 3, the rest of the Metal Slug series went down hill, but the series itself is still remembered as one of the most humorous Contra clones to ever be in existence.
