Hey folks,

I am posting this from my phone so let me start off by saying that I hope this all goes through...cause there is no way I am going to attempt to redo this whole thing. Anyway, I promised some forum users that I would post these up when I had some free time, so I figured that I would do so while on vacation. When I bought the cab it was in rough shape; dropped down stairs, painted with multiple layers of latex house paint (with a paint brush!!), and completely non wired. It had a disgusting 7 button cp that was made a such thing metal that it was wavy when bolted on tight. Alot of work has gone into it so far, and I still have a ton ahead of me. Figured I would post this for people upset at the small scratches on there candies...remember it could always be waaaay worse:mr_t:

Without further delay....pics

This is the earliest pic of this cab I can find. Pic is huge, but I found this when another member of the forums posted it in the candies thread. This was prior to it taking a digger down some stairs. Note the pepto colored latex...ugh

imgp0199u.jpg

Partially disassembled and stripped. As you can see under the white latex was an ungodly yellowed bezel. This thing must have been stationed at a japanese cigarette factory at one point in its life..

imgp0200g.jpg

Redone cp surround. Instead of painting it, i decided to vinyl dye it instead.

imgp0204b.jpg

Repainted bezel, cleaned speaker grills, new cp and 1 & 2 p panel, and stripped down to original paint on both sides.

Still gotta tackle the base, coin box, and back of the cab. Its a slow process of heating the paint and slowly peeling it off...so I should be done some time in 2010..haha

Special thanks to BeaglePuss for the cp and my wife for dealing iwth little flecks of pink paint everywhere for months.

Dude, looking mint!

That vinyl dye works wonders man. I'm actual using vinyl dye on my NES repros, and the result has been great so far. I was wondering what it would look like on a cab, and apparently it looks pretty damn sweet!

That CP looks AWESOME with those skeleton buttons. With the four button layout, the Neo color scheme is definitely the way to go.

Did you manage to score any blue tape for the trim? I would be more than willing to go in on it with you if you're down.

Again, great work so far. I'm pumped to see the end result.

Now you need to come down to RI and make my cab look that nice!!

That control panel is so nice, im jealous.

I wish I even knew the first step on how to do this stuff. Just me trying to get my cab in stereo was a process and the wiring job isn't the best... :annoyed:

Wow, that came out fantastic. Much better looking now. I've got nothing against pink, but your Egret 29 looks much better in blue.

Disney Impress FTW!

Looks amazing man, those grills look a lot better than the Blast City grills, just replaced mine with NOS and even those were a pain in the ass to fit in the mounts.

That dye worked wonders.

looks awesome so far! how do you do vinyl dye? are there lots of color choices?
I buy it from Auto Zone, but I know other places like Home Depot carry it. It's similar to spray paint, and come sin a variety of colors. It cost about $5-$7 per can.

Regarding the pink: It was painted with terrible looking pink house paint. Not only did it look like absolute shit, but the blue is the OG. That's what's up.

The speaker grills were painted with black latex paint and were quite a bitch to clean...but with a little elbow grease and a magic eraser they came out pretty good.

As for the pink..if it were a nice looking paint job I would have considered it, but if any of you guys saw it in person you would have changed it as well.

I get mine at autozone as well. Started by painting a few joystick bases and fell in love with this stuff. If I can I will use this over spray paint any day of the week!

Im leaving the marquee for the end as that is fubar x 12. Gonna need to bondo and sand it...so im probably gonna skip the light inside of it, cause im never going to be able to open it again.

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

Man DZ you are doing wonders with that cab. Keep it up. I dont think pink complements that cab very much so I would have changed it as well. The blue vinyl die looks fucking awesome. You are doing a great thing with that cab.

Keep up the good work. Perhaps once it is done i'll need to take a trip down there and check it out..hehe.

Awesome progress on that Egret! I think I would like to try vinyl dye on one of my next projects. I am wondering how does it compare to paint? What does it feel like? And does it peel or chip?

Thanks man! The dye applies just like spray paint, but is supposed to cure for 24 hours. I know that it soaks into the plastic because a black joystick base I dyed white has a nasty deep scratch, and its still white. If that were regular spray paint I'd chipped paint and a huge black scratch on there. The texture on the cp is pretty much identical to a factory cp...seems to soak in the color but retain the original surfaces texture. As far as peeling goes, I have had the stick I have painted for almost 2 years now and they haven't peeled at all even though they get quite a bit of use.

Nice! As always DZ's painting skills are pretty impressive. I knew this cabs was in the right hands and I'm glad to see the progress coming along, I know is hard but man! by the looks of it I can tell all the hardship is well worth it.

Restoring cabs is such a joy...such an athlete...with holes in his pants...such an athlete!

Edit: What I would like to know is; what kind of asshole did all that hacking previously?, I mean you gotta be a fucking retard in order to butcher the cab the way it was. The drop on the stairs I can forgive, after all shit happens everyday, but the previous paint job was premeditated...

DZ,

Thanks for sharing the info about the vinyl dye. I am curious about one other thing, why use different methods (vinyl dye the CP but paint the bezel) ? Did you do this because of the work necessary on the marquee? Do you think vinyl dye would have been effective for coloring the bezel given the yellowing if you were not concerned about matching it to the paint on the marquee?

Honestly, I though the bezel was fiber glass and not plastic. I wasnt sure how it was going to work, so I went with bonding spray on that. After further talk with Seth, I have found out that you can use the dye on the bezel as well. It actually will probably come out better then mine, as the yellowing will not come through on the dye, but might eventually on the bonding paint that I used. Eventually, I am going to have the rest of the cab sanded and power coated, cause yours came out fucking amazing!

If you have any other questions, let me know

Thanks! If I could only find the time to finish it. I am dealing with a pending sale of my other house and trying to get my Harley back on the road so I can try some touring this summer. Time and Money - you can never have too much of either one.:mr_t:
