Chinese Candies:
Cheap alternative, or pieces of shit?

I came across what looks like a descent deal on eBay (Link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270389230529)

1K for a brand new Chinese Candy, with free shipping. He has a second Chinese Candy for sale that looks a little less flashy. The guy has 15 available of each.

So my question is, is it even remotely worth it? Does anyone have any experience with Chinese Candies? Do they have descent monitors? I know I've seen the smaller of the two candies on the boards before.

The more expensive of the two is a Vs City clone which I think is funny. I think it actually looks alright, and the monitor does rotate. Thoughts?

when I was last in guangzhou and the south china area.... these were everywhere.... and most of them also had awful monitors in them with a laundry list of problems. Seriously, probably 75% of these that I saw had some kind of issue with the monitor. Those kinds of numbers elude to the overall quality of the cabinets and the componentry I think.

While 1000 shipped might seem good, I think you would probably end up regretting buying one of these... especially since you have such nice cabs already!

... yeah, and don't forget about where it's coming from. I mean, I have absolutely nothing against China or the Chinese, but as far as manufacturing goes they're are not exactly known for making durable and quality products.

Well, that sums it up nicely lol!

I figured they were garbage, but the price was so temping (with the included shipping). Thanks for the info!

... damn, that shit is tempting. I didn't even look at the link before I replied... You know you got it bad when you say to yourself, "...well, if the monitor does go out as soon as it arrives, I can always replace it." ... I am trying hard not to get seeped into buying one of these. :crying:!!!Somebody stop me, before I do something stupid!!! :crying:

Lol I was about to post these, saw them earlier this morning.

They appear to be nice enough, but they're obviously Chinese knockoffs, and the quality is highly suspect most likely.

For $500 I'd consider it...

I know the seller as he is local to me. I almost was going to warehouse them for him.

The cabs are generic Chinese candy cabs. They are nice-looking, but they do NOT have rotating monitors. I have not seen them powered on, so I don't know how they look. If I get a chance to see them powered on, I will post what I think of them.

Also, the cabs do not have any artwork on them. When he brought them through customs, Customs made him remove the artwork from all the cabs as a trademark violation (they had Ms. Pac-Man and Mario characters, and customs said they were trademark violations).

IMO, the cabs are nice but not worth the $999 asking price. I am surprised to see him offering free shipping, which is good, though.

If you are seriously considering getting one of these for $999, you'd be better served by buying one of my Egret II''s for $900.

Hope this helps.

If you're willing to ship it for free, consider it sold lol!

I don't plan on purchasing one, I was more interested in hearing what people thought. With the TGA auction coming up, I have put little thought into shipping cabs lately.

Sorry Bibliophile, but you're wrong. These do have rotating monitors.

I also know this guy locally, and I've been over to his warehouse to see these cabinets in action. I have looked in and out, and can confirm that the monitors can be rotated. Of course, there's no rotation mechanism, but the frame around the monitor can be rotated and remounted, as well as the bezel.

The cabinets are ABS plastic, instead of metal. Monitors are all wei-ya standard rez. No tri-syncs, unfortunately, but the 29" cabs have flat tubes and could probably be tri-sync'ed fairly easily.

On the inside, it's fairly basic, with a simple power supply and jamma harness. There's no EMI filter or isolation transformer. It is fused, however. Wei-ya chassis do not need transformers and can accept voltage ranges between 100-240 VAC 50/60 Hz.

tl;dr: It's no Japanese candy, but it's brand new and it gets the job done.

Hey what do the cheaper screens do? Burn in easier or just look blurry? Only cabinets i have any experience with are the older mortal kombat, pacman ones...

The screens look fine. Since CRT's have been mostly discontinued, this is pretty much the last brand available anymore. All of the Japanese manufacturers have gone to LCDs.

Sure, the chassis all have cheap capacitors installed. They may develop problems in real arcades after a little while, but they're good enough to get at least 3 years of home use. Then all they need is a cap kit to get them back. And the chassis looks really easy to recap.

Sorry for not being clearer. I guess this is what I meant: they don't have rotation mechs (at least based on what he told me). Thanks for clarifying that.

Hey guys i was looking at the cabinet Bibliophile had for sale, the Taito Egret II. Anyways i was just wondering what all would be involved in hooking up a PC to its monitor. I have a mame cab now that uses a older monitor that came in a Mortal Kombat 2 cabinet. I use a JPAC and ArcadeVGA2 to get the video to it, and was kinda wanting to get away from using the JPAC because it has been causing some weird problems with the PC itself. Anyways if somebody could shed some light on what is involved id really appreciate it. thanks

You'll have to stick with the JPAC solution, since Egret 2 monitors are only dual-res. No VGA.

Ok one more question how would i go about hooking up a PS3/XBOX 360/Dreamcast to this monitor? I would guess that id still have to use the jpac and run a vga from the consoles to it. Thanks
