From Cyberfanatix:

SNK Playmore's artist Falcoon retired from the company during the middle of the development of KOF Maximum Impact Regulation A 2 due to negative rumors from the fans.

So, he quit simply because he couldn't take a little criticism? Well, he was an OK artist, but, in my opinion, he was the second-worst artist SNKP had (number one was Nona, but he's been climbing up my personal rankings ever since taking on the ginormous task of hand-drawing new sprites for KOF XII and beyond).

Still, I wonder what this will mean for the MI series (if it even has a future at this point).

really?
I kind of liked falcoon's woork.
it was nona's work that really took me a couple years to appreciate.
are you sure he's just not bored and making an excuse to get out of things?
I really miss shinkiro, it makes me sad when I see him doing art
on a game that kind of sucks. I mean the art's good, it's just the game that sucks.

Agreed.
I also don't like the fact that UDON Studios constantly credit him as "Capcom Artist Shinkiro", completely ignoring the fact that he was with SNK for over a decade.
If Shinkiro were to come back to SNKP (which I highly doubt will ever happen), I'd welcome him back with open arms.

Hiroaki is definately tops in SNK's stable right now. I don't miss Shinkiro one bit. Every face he draws looks exactly the same. They all resemble George Clooney. The only thing he ever did well was the painting/coloring, and I don't even know if that was actually done by him.

I liked the art that Falcoon did for KOF2003, though his original design work is generally way too fanciful for my tastes.

I wish SNKP would hire back Kitasenri again (and no, it's not "Senri Kita"; Kitasenri is the name of a place, after which the artist named himself). He's the one who did the artwork for the SamSho64 titles. Awesome work in every regard.

Nona I can take or leave, but I will say that I'm VERY glad that Shinkiro isn't anywhere near KOF12. :P

Didn't he do the art for Samurai Spirits Sen?

I don't think so... doesn't look like his style. But then, it's been 12 years or some such... styles change. I think it's the same artist who did SS1-4 and SSRPG. Can't remember the name.

The Wikipedia entry for Sen says that the character art was done by Kitasenri, but then again, Wikipedia isn't always correct...

...especially if you like bland, generic artwork with no personality whatsoever. If so, then yeah, Hiroaki is incredible.

I see a lot of people rag on Falcoon, I personally love his style.

I'm a fan of Shinkiro as well, but I will admit that sometimes certain characters he draws can look kind of cheesy.

On the subject of artists, does anyone know the name of the guy who did the official art for the Capcom Vs. games?

Bengus. He also did most of the Darkstalkers art along with some SSF2 and a good chunk of the SFA stuff. By far, my favorite Capcom artist.

Yeah, I really like his stuff too. I would have loved to see him do some work for Marvel back in the day when I first saw his Vs. series work.

Seriously? Whatever, if Nona's artwork is considered having "personality", I think I'll pass (I can probably pick something I can actually stand from him maybe 3/10 of the time, the av being one exception, though he has been improving). I'd take Hiroaki or Styleos over the likes of Nona, Falcoon, and Shinkiro any day.

Hiroaki's art is on par with Shinkiro's IMO. I see no love for Tonko's Last Blade and Garou MotW art? Her ending art in 2k2UM was really good.

Well I can't blame him honestly. It's not like our niche group of SNK fans are exactly open minded to new things. I guess it's easy to criticize when you are stuck in the 1990's.

Kind of a bummer as I enjoyed the Max Impact series. Wasn't that balanced, but it was good fun.

For a fan-artist>associate artist>head art director/producer of some of SNK-P's intellectual properties(SVC, KOF), its not so much a surprise for me that he left, just more he left after he suffered "alot" of criticism of his art style(pretty much from the get go). While his style is more or less a love it/hate it attitude, I happened to really like his art for SVC:chaos and KOF2k3; those are the two games that drawn me into the Neo-Geo system in the first place. Now that the MI producer has gone awol, I'm wondering if RA2/MI3 will be released now or if that series will go the way of MOTW.

I don't like his style and specially his faces but have no technical complaints.

That "quit due to negative rumours of the fans" thing smells like bullshit, though.

Hiroaki's art in XI beats anything Shinkiro's ever done. Period.

And yeah, Tonko is good stuff. I always loved the discarded original sketch for the LB2 cover. She's not my favorite (too little detail for my tastes), but she's definitely got flair.

Who drew the crazy shit that was in the KOFXI endings?
