Yeah, I couldn't find a thread when I ran a search, so I'm making one. Also the search has been giving me this error for a couple years now:

Code:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 25165824 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 1048576 bytes) in /home/www/neo-geo/forums/search.php on line 1007

So that's my excuse if I end up needing one.

I feel like someone's going to mention Gunstar Heroes, even though this isn't about Genesis...

Anyway...

I'm already aware of:

Prinny
Power Stone
Hammerin' Hero
MGS: PO
Gurumin
Phantasy Star Portable (lol PSP, I just noticed that now)
Daxter
Castlevania
God of War
Fighter ports that suck due to controls
RPGs that everyone buys, but nobody actually plays
Whatever else the system is known for like Lumines, Wipeout, LocoRoco and all that mainstream crap

I think I named almost every good game on the system already, and some of them are ports or might as well be ports, so that's kinda sad.

Any other suggestions?

I'm open to imports as long as they don't require any real understanding of moon speak to play (and enjoy).

Also actual ports like R-Type and Gradius don't interest me unless there's something extra/special about them... Then again, I want Power Stone, so just mention them anyway.

Any discussions of good PSP games mustn't leave out Patapon.

Probably the best original IP on the PSP, full stop.

Syphon Filter on PSP got a LOT of playtime for me, I'd recommend them
Bounty Hunter is good
Also, don't skip Monster Hunter

You might like Crisis Core: FFVII. I personally did not enjoy it but a lot of people do. Its only like 20 bucks new. Its a pretty mindless game though, no real strategy involved in the fights except "mash X until everything is dead, maybe heal on occasion". Theres also a lot of unskippable cinematic scenes when Zack gets a Limit Break in battle, which is very often and seemingly totally random. Nothing is more annoying than fighting two really easy enemies but having to watch a 30 second cinematic of Zack powering up just to kill them in two seconds. And the story is basically pointless fan service fluff. Any new characters it brings in are totally forgettable at best and totally annoying at worst. I'm sure it got a lot of Sephiroth fanboys wet though.

I've also heard good things about Resistance: Retribution. Don't know much about it though.

R-Type Command is a turn based strat game. My friend has it and it's pretty good. Nothing great, but still, fun to play an old school style turn based game.

Gradius Collection and Sengoku Ace III are excellent choices!

Bomberman
After Burner Climax
Ridge Racer
Puyo Pop Fever
Bust A Move deluxe
Parodius Portable
Salamander Portable
Twinbee Portable

If you're getting too picky then you're shit out of luck, there's plenty of excellent titles for the PSP just go out there and do some research.

Bust A Move deluxe

This one may just be taste.
I remember muddling through around ten stages before trading it.
It wasn't hard. It was that the border theme and music never changed.
At least, it didn't in comparison to other Bust-A-Move titles.

I'd call it a pass unless you're the type to mute the game and listen to mix-tapes through the headphones of a walkman.

Lumines is a great game. Really good imo. Pick it up if you like puzzle stlye games. Also Final Fantasy Tactics and Mega Man Maverick Hunter X are also worth looking into.

I only have one new suggestion: Crush. It was a pretty innovative puzzle game that totally flopped, so it can be had super cheap now. If you like puzzlers, this one's a no-brainer (ahem).

Otherwise, I'd also recommend Patapon (seriously, get this one), the two Mega Man remakes, MGS: PO, Final Fantasy Tactics, and God of War. Between all that, that's a pretty damn good place to start.

I always thought the PSP was a bit underrated. Sure, it's not the best handheld ever, but there are more good games than people seem to think.

Nothing to add other than Mega Man Maverick Hunter X can be found at Target on clearance for ~$10, but only for the next week or so.

How's Capcom Classics Reloaded? I've seen that @ Target clearance for around the same price, but was loathe to pick it up. It has King of Dragons, which was kind of fun.

Don't forget to mod it. That adds on lots of great PS1 titles for you to play. ;)

I didn't see anyone mention Killzone Liberation, so I'd suggest that as a great top down action game. +1 if you like the Killzone series, but it's still a good game regardless.

Also the Warhammer 40K strategy title is worth tracking down if you're a fan of that franchise.

DJ Max series, the newer ones seem more beginner friendly btw (not including the American release).

I also really like lnitial D and Monster Hunter Portable. The American release of Monster Hunter is outdated, but it's not hard to find an English patched version of the most recent Japanese release if you want to play that.

I just got the Grand Theft Auto PSP releases for really cheap - like under $30 from Amazon for both combined. I know those had PS2 releases as well, but just mentioning them because they seem like good games for the price.

Nice to see I'm not the only one aware of Crush.

Crush >>> Rest of the PSP library combined

Coming from someone who actually plays a lot of PSP games.

the Bleach: Heat the Soul series has always been a good japanese import fighting game.
the controls are simpler than street fighter or tekken and the graphics are really good.
it's epesically good if you actually like the Bleach anime or manga.
the latest one (#6 in the series, so far) just came out last month. it's had a Marvel vs Capcom type tag team system since the 5th one.
