I'm considering going to an Arcade auction in the Dallas area in May and I'm curious as to how these work.

Anyone have any info?

bring your own extension cord, huge one. a lot of times they arent all plugged in. depends on the venue really though.

dont get your hopes up on the parts and boards and misc shit. prices for that stuff tend to go on either extreme, and most likely you cant test the stuff.

as for cabinets, make sure to check the monitor thuroughly, as thats the only valuable part. the game inside doesnt tend to effect the price unless its a classic or can still make money. you can get games in cabs for half the price of the boards.

but again you can end up at an auction where everything goes for far too much too.

also dont expect any controls to be worth a damn.

Depending the amount being auctioned off, it can be a whole day affair. I find that the longer you are willing to wait in the day, the better the deals therer are. They tend to auction the classics (ie galaga, pac-man, etc) early on because the high rollers are there. Try to look for cabs you want towards the end point. I picked up a NEO 6-slot for $245 right near the end. Also, be careful of bidding wars. If someone is trying to outbid you on a particular machine, it could be the owner trying to get every last penny out of you.

Don't get caught up in all the BS of bidding.

It's usually all setup to make it seem more exciting, theres usually a few guys that seem to bid on allot of stuff, usually there the owner or working for them or working for whoever is holding the auction so they can jack up the price for things they think are worth a certain amount.

Don't believe anything they say unless you can verify it :)

Hmm, never saw this reply.

What do you mean bidding against yourself?

Also, what is the possibility of any candies being available at these auctions? Pretty good? Rare? Inevitable? The auction is this weekend. Can't wait.

.

If the auctioneer thinks that you will go higher and nobody is bidding, he will sometimes make up bids in the corner of the crowd.... To get you to go higher.... You are in effect, bidding against yo self.

I'm going to one in Milwaukee in a few weeks (June 13th)... my first time at an auction.

Looking for an Egret II or Candy, but I have no idea if they will have anything like that...

I might join you at the auction. Depending on when I work, haven't seen my schedule yet. Make sure to get there at the beginning of the preview so you have plenty of time to test things out. I'll PM you if I think I can make it.

Edit: you are going to this auction, correct?

From previous experience, slim to none. There are plenty of great cabs to be had though. Good luck.

Welp, I just got back from Dallas and I'm back in my comfy hoose. I ended up with 2 cabs (more on that later)

There was a LOT of junk at this auction. Pins that were 45000 years old and in 4 pieces, lots of vending machines, gumball machines (and gumballs!) and plenty of really nice pins and many cabs, but really only 10 or so that I would have considered, and plenty of classics, many of which were in almost pristine condition. I really wanted to bid on an Asteroids and a fucking C L E A N Tempest cab. Seriously, it looked like it rolled off the line a month ago. I only had $600 on me so I didn't want to spend too much on classics. I was out for a JAMMA cab and a MAME cab.

They had an awesome NFL Blitz 2000 cab with some HDD issues from what I could tell, but an easy peasy fix. Several Neos, a couple of 1 slots (one with 3 buttons, lulz), a couple of 2 Slots, though all of the Neos were beat to hell. No CP overlays, jacked up screens, etc. A really nice, clean Mortal Kombat 1 cab with a greened monitor. Someone got an SVC Chaos 1 slot in what looked like a Die Hard cab for $25 but I couldn't hear if it worked or not. I could have sworn I heard the words "ohh.. flatline" in the auctioneer's chant, but still even if it didn't work - a 1 slot MVS and a SVC Chaos cart for $25? Not bad.

I saw an XMen vs SF cab with shitty buttons but a really nice monitor. I never made it that far into the auction though, I had my 2 cabs by that point and left. A few days ago I was telling my wife that if I found a Stun Runner cab (the sit down ver) at this auction I'd spend all $600 on it if need be because I knew there would never be one. And, I didn't see one.

Until I cashed out. FACE....PALM. Live and learn I guess. I should have paid more attention.

At any rate, I ended up with a Tekken Tag cab with a pretty good monitor and jacked buttons, but otherwise a clean cab. I found out later that it was missing it's back cover where the monitor is, but that's just MDF so I can just cut a new one for it and paint it black. Got it for $150. I figured I'd turn it into a MAME cab.

The other one, which I paid $270 for was a Demolish Fist Atomiswave cab. I've been wanting an AW for quite a while so I picked it up. Perfect monitor, buttons all work, no rot on the cab, and an Atomiswave! woot!

Because I bought these two, I wasn't able to spend any more money on that Xmen Vs SF cab, or the Tornado Cyclone II foosball table that was way in the back. I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to get that for under $300 or $400 anyway.

My biggest problem was the damn rain on the way back to ATX. Good thing I got a tarp, but the sides did get wet and the AW cab's power supply was exposed, so I'm just going to let them sit for about a week before I fire them up. Hope nothing bad happened to em. I'll post pics of the cabs later when I get them up and running.

All in all it was a cool experience (never bid at a live auction before) and though there was a lot of junkers, there were also some decent jems there, and a dream that I totally missed out on :( Absolutely NO candies to speak of, but there was one Japanese game there, but it was maybe video pachinko or something else. It wasn't on when I was there, and it only had like 3 buttons to use on the front, no joysticks anywhere on the cp.

I might, actually. Not just yet but I most likely will end up selling the board, though I was looking at the Atomiswave cab I got which was most likely a converted Street Fighter II cab like this http://www.klov.com/images/10/1043276265.jpg

And it seems I might be able to turn THAT cab into my MAME/AW cab and I might just get rid of the Tekken one. Haven't decided yet, but the Tekken cab I got is incredibly huge. We'll see what the future holds.

The thing I learn to buy from these auctions are the game itself (pcb, computer, whatever the case may be) and the cab... that's it. I will always fix/replace the monitor and the buttons and sticks ALWAYS need to be replaced. Always. Keeping this in mind, you can find some great deals!
