Ok , from the original thread at arcadeotaku.com

So I've had a chunk missing from my control panel housing on one of my cabs since I've owned it, I've now used some modelling epoxy putty based on someones recommendation (he also sent me some free in the post! :) ) and I've filled it pretty damn good if I do say so myself.

I've now used some general appliance/radiator touch up paint and although its miles better than it was before, its still a different finish and shade to the rest of the plastics - I've tried 'laquering' it with some clear nail varnish but it didn't really make it smooth and shine like the rest of the panel.

I might be unable to get it back to the correct finish without sanding and spraying the whole control panel housing and I'm not prepared to do that just yet, so eh.

I was just wondering if anyone here ( I know twalden has had to do some similar work to the top corner of his impress), and if theres any way to get it back to the same finish the rest of the panel plastics is. You candy cab owners will know the smooth glossy finish I'm talking about.

Any help or info would be great, but I guess I'm being pretty anal as you can see yourself it is now far better than it was before!

Thanks :make_fac:

youll probably need to buff/polish the whole area to get it to blend.

a wheel, some compound, and an electric drill and you should be good to go.

hmm thats not a bad idea, what 'compound' though ? any more info?

surely being a different material and paint completely I don't think it'll ever match 100%

might be worth a try though hmm .

edit: never mind noticed theres a buffing compound specifically for it

cheers

I just bought a dremel and some buffing compound online , £30 not too bad.

I don't think the paint I applied is the right type now, maybe I should have applied some polycarbonate or enamel white instead. not sure, just brainstorming with people in chat :emb:

I'm sure the dremel will be useful otherwise anyway

christ all this for a 1cm square area :make_fac:

That seems like a great deal.

I use my dremel for everything.... mitering, drill press, cutting, sanding... on and on...

Looks good so far though... awesome job filling that in!

Yeah... should be. I've popped on the polishing bits and used that for some finishing stuff before and it worked great even without any polishing compounds (granted I was just mainly using it for a cleaning type polishing).

But yeah... the dremel is certainly a geek must-have! :)

Just make sure you let the paint cure before you start buffing or you will take the paint right off.

yeah, its pretty dry its quick drying stuff, I can always paint it again anyway, its hardly a large area.

I just hope the buffing works, it'd be awesome if I could hardly see it.

Well, that sucked, I tried with the dremel and buffing felt end, and buffing compound, and it did bugger all, I had to repaint it as it took a little of it off.

Theres no chance I can get it to blend in when its hand painted and the rest is that smooth, glossy finish :crying: I've now given up , repainted it by hand (its only 1cm square) and said fuck it.

All that money and effort wasted, oh well I guess I have a dremel and loads of the wrong spraypaint left.

;)

sigh

Maybe it wasn't cured long enough?

Also one thing might be getting the dremel to the correct velocity... with those small buffing bits and high velocity I would think you might have some issues with too much pressure on a small area of painted surface. Do you have a larger surface area felt bit?

Just my thoughts... not sure though. I've always been a doop when it comes to paint finishes and such.

I tried both and to be honest they didn't do jack. at low RPM with polishing/buffing compound, using a felt tip and a felt disc. One just took the paint off. To be honest its only a thin layer and its hand painted so it'll come off with any kind of pressure, I don't think buffing it is the correct method.

It needs to be properly sprayed. I don't want to do the whole panel really though.

Yeah good point... might not be sticking well enough to the surface.

Still looks pretty good though.
