Is it really worth having a dedicated TATE setup?!

I have been toying with the idea of TATE-ing my 20" PVM for shooters. I just do not know if it is worth doing permenantly. I currently have my laptop connected to it for MAME and may have my Gamecube for Ikaruga/Chaos Field.

How many members have a dedicated TATE screen? I do not have many shooters yet, but do plan on getting more in the near future.

Thanks!

If you are into/planning on getting into shmups, I think it's a no brainer. I keep my PVM tate.
Occasionally I get the urge to hori it up but then remember how many other great shmups there are to play. Between the saturn, ps2, and dreamcast there are just too many great shmups with a tate option. These are just the one I've been playing:
Saturn:
Batsugun
Layer Section
Battle Garegga
Mahou Grand Prix
Dodonpachi
Strikers 1945

PS2/X:
Espgaluda
DOJ
Ibara
Mushi
Sengoku Ace
Raiden III
Raiden DX
Strikers 1945 II

Dreamcast (other than Ikaruga):
Psyvaria 2
Under Defeat
Gunbird 2

I say tate it now, not a moment to lose. A tate'd PVM is a shmupers badge of honor. ;)

If you got the space, track down another PVM.

Right now the PVM is horizontal. How long should L leave it unplugged before I rotate it on it's side? When I do it now, I get discoloration.

Thanks!

My pvm has a degauss button for that. TATE the monitor, hit the degauss button for about 1 sec. If still some discoloration, wait a few and press it again.

If your pvm doesn't have a degauss button, prolly do what I did when I tated a normal TV. Leave it unplugged for an hour or more, then TATE it. I think that's what I used to do to fix discoloration. lol

The stick is not modded. I got it from Game Force in Boulder. It is a three-in-one arcade stick from Mayflash.

Bungie cords! I have a bar that goes across the back of the closet that is actually part of the closet so I have the monitors tied down to them. Really, if an earthquake its it will probably tear down my room mates wall when it all comes down ;)

StealthLurker, I have my PVM rotated the other direction. So now when I play Ikaruga on the NGC, it looks wrong. I do not want to TATE it the other way because then I cannot get rid of the discoloration.

Not sure what to do now because I am also gonna connect the PSX to it too.

Yeah that's the pain with certain games. Some rotate clockwise only and some rotate counter only. Part of the reason why I also have a LCD based setup. Much, much easier to go either way plus horizontal.

When you rotated the other way, did you do that unplug for a while and degauss thing also?

Yes I did. I had it unplugged for almost two hours and still no go.

Some PVM models just don't tate very well unfortunately.

Yeah. I might just put it back to horizontal and just buy an NEC 29 later.

So today I was looking over Craigslist and found a posting of a 25" PVM for $50.00 so I bought it. Now I keep the 20" in TATE mode on the PC for MAME and connected all my S-Video capable consoles to the new 25". Here is a pic of my current corner gaming setup:

It stands for Professional Video Monitor. It is what Sony used to seperate it's televisions and it's production quality monitors. They do not have a tuner iside them at all.

Nice find. I wish I could find deals like that on craigslist in my area.
