I looked quickly at my newly acquired MVS 2 slot. There appears (at first glance) to be a battery on board. Presumably this is to keep saved high-scores?

I was just wondering, has there been any account of batteries leaking and damaging the board?

Any other piece of (neo) equipement have batteries that I should be looking out for?

I believe that battery is just like a CMOS battery in your PC. Eventually it will die, yes. I've worked in desktop support for 5+ yrs and have never heard of the batteries leaking in a PC, so I doubt they'll leak in your MVS. They are batteries though, so it COULD happen.

It keeps, for up to 8 games I believe) the high scores, cart dip settings, coin counts and Date/Time using that battery. Once you put in the 9th game it bumps the settings off of the game that hasn't been played the longest.

Hehe...

The reason I'm asking is about 2 years ago a bunch of people i know went into a panic when they found out that their Amiga's batteries started leaking and damaged the motherboard. (I just yanked the battery out of my A4000, it wasn't doing much for me anyway.)

So, thinking of the age of MVS's, I was just starting to wonder if I should keep an eye on it.

I mean, I think you CAN pull the battery out if you want, just beware that it won't save any of your settings for any of your stuff. I'm not even sure if the Neo would boot without it though as I've never pulled the battery out of mine or heard of anyone doing that.

I would hope by checking it every once in a while you would be able to tell when it's getting ready to go. Of course, batteries just leak for no reason sometimes.

I feel sorry for your friends' Amigas! Of course, aren't they like REALLY old? I think they have a few years on the Neo.

MY battery is totally dead, but it is soldierd on the the board, so it is not easily removable (I don't feel like de-soldiering it). It doesn't really cause any problem, just my clock is always wrong and it doesn't save high scores after you unplug it... It is a 4 slot anyway though, so change the games twice and those scores are lost anyway :)

I recently picked up my second 6 slot board for £50 which I thought was very cheap :D , it played fine once set up and all six slots worked perfectly, however once it was switched off and I came to use it the next day all the settings were lost and this was annoying when i had to move my cab out everytime to alter the settings again so my select button was working , I did post about this not long ago and got some good advice from ttooddddyy
There is a 3.6 volt 50mAH replaceable solder mount pcb Ni-Cd battery on the bottom board.
These board sets are now 10 years or so old, chances are thats your problem, its worth checking them periodicaly anyway as they tend to sweat onto the board and cause corrosion problems.

.

The batterys used on the boards are not very easy to come accross here in the UK as I tried a few places without success so I was asked to take the battery in to maplins so they could try and find a similar replacement, when I came to unsolder the battery I noticed it said rechargeable on it, now i'm no battery expert so it had me thinking what kind of charger do you need for these types of battery, I decided to leave it for awhile before removing the battery and a couple of days later it hit me (fell off the stool straight on my foot) I plugged the board back into my cab and left it on all day whilst I was at work and then kept it on all evening (good excuse to play on it) I switched it off before I went to bed and when I got up the next morning all the settings where still there and everything was working perfectly, I left it on that day also just to be sure but it has now been a week of just standard use and the settings have been there everytime.

I am guessing this is why he sold it so cheap knowing that it didn't work properly but now it does I really did get a bargain. It must have just been out of action for awhile.

Sorry for going on so much but that is just my experience and it may also work for others with battery problems, such a simple sollution but not the first thing that springs to mind (not mine anyway.
