There is a 3.6 volt 50mAH replaceable solder mount pcb Ni-Cd battery on the bottom board.
These board sets are now 10 years or so old, chances are thats your problem, its worth checking them periodicaly anyway as they tend to sweat onto the board and cause corrosion problems.

.
The batterys used on the boards are not very easy to come accross here in the UK as I tried a few places without success so I was asked to take the battery in to maplins so they could try and find a similar replacement, when I came to unsolder the battery I noticed it said rechargeable on it, now i'm no battery expert so it had me thinking what kind of charger do you need for these types of battery, I decided to leave it for awhile before removing the battery and a couple of days later it hit me (fell off the stool straight on my foot) I plugged the board back into my cab and left it on all day whilst I was at work and then kept it on all evening (good excuse to play on it) I switched it off before I went to bed and when I got up the next morning all the settings where still there and everything was working perfectly, I left it on that day also just to be sure but it has now been a week of just standard use and the settings have been there everytime.
I am guessing this is why he sold it so cheap knowing that it didn't work properly but now it does I really did get a bargain. It must have just been out of action for awhile.
Sorry for going on so much but that is just my experience and it may also work for others with battery problems, such a simple sollution but not the first thing that springs to mind (not mine anyway.
