I just got ahold of a new (to me) 19" Gold cab and everything is great with the picture, except that horizontaly, it's set too wide. There appears to be plenty of methods to change vertical in the back of the monitor boardd and also on a side adjust panel, but nothing for the horizontal. I did a search and it seems that many times the horizontal adjust (to shrink or widen the entire horizontal) is way out of the way. What do i need to do to correct this?

A little more info.... it appears to be a Wells Gardner 19" K7601... I now know what I need too adjust (like the physical part, but don't know how. It's near impossible to reach and Do I just use an axel on the outer case or is there a hole inside of there to use for the adjustment.

If it's anything like my 25" wells, there's a coil that needs to be adjusted. Inside of the plastic housing there's a ferrite core. You should /really/ get a set of plastic adjustment tools (since metal ones can easily destroy the core, not to mention get /screaming/ hot if you're doing the adjustment with the cab on). Check out http://www.therealbobroberts.net/parts.html and look for the Plastic Alignment Tool Kits.

Sounds like it's doable with one of those kits... I'll keep the metal axels away! I'll live with the set up the way it is for now. Thanks for the assist.

Ok guys, I have a color tuning kit for my monitor, one of the plastic ones, so I'm ready to do the adjustment. I can fit my hand back behind where I need to (as awkward as it is). When I get the right fitting hex in there, I feel resistance when I start turning it about 1-2 Centimeters in, but it's not budging at ALL. I don't want to screw anything up, but is there something that I need to be doing to get this moonitor adjusted?

Is the ferrite core (slug) cracked ? If so, you need to remove the broken pieces and replace the core.

As for it "sticking" everything I've read about 'em indicates that they often DO stick. Most recommend gently turning one way, then back the other (you're probably only moving a fraction of a turn) to gently work it lose.

Of course, everything I've seen gives me the impression that width coils are the /devil/, sooo yeah.

Is it possible to replace /just/ the core w/out having to replace the whole coil? Where the heck would you get a new core from and how would you go about replacing it?

Thanks for the replies guys. I've gotten no where in moving this thing so I have to ask...

1) How would I determine if the core is cracked? Do I just have to slide the black out protective shell and then just take a peak on the outside?

2) If I did want to replace the core, is it as simple as pulling it off the board and popping it back on or is this a soldered piece (which is what I'd assume it to be), in which case, there is more work involved.

Yes you can replace just the core, the trouble is that if it is cracked - it can be difficult to remove; at times ive had to drill them out, and run the risk of damaging the plastic coil former. Usually you can coax them out without damaging the coil.
The trick is to use the correct tool in order to not break the core.

Thanks for the tips guys... went through the Bob Roberts page to get the width coil and did a replacement with a new soldering iron (got one for $20 at Radio Shack). Had my engineer aunt helping me through it, making sure I didn't take out anything or burn anything. Desoldering the old joins was a pain, but putting in the new piece was super easy. The screen looks great, I can see everything now.
