Candy Cab or Supergun?

I am torn between getting a candy cab and simply getting a supergun. I was curious as to how everyone else feels. What are the Pro's and Con's of each? The main thing I am worried about is the video quality on a CRT tv Vs. a monitor and what ways there are to get around this. Also, whether or not I choose to get a candy cab or supergun can also mean some extra cash in my pocket for an extra pcb. The main game I am looking to get is Espgaluda and possibly KOF 11 with an atomiswave. Which route would be best for someone who currently knows nothing about maintaining a candy cab and lives in a second floor apartment? If I should go with the supergun, where is a good place to order one from? Thanks for any help!!!

With a supergun it'll be somewhat easier to swap games and will save much more space, but with a cab you get the full arcade experience which makes it all worth it. Staring down a 29" monitor with a pure RGB signal, banging the joysticks and buttons around without fear of swinging the controller across your lap, etc. It is easier to interface on a cab in my opinion, which makes it more fun and easier to play.

As far as maintenance goes, as long as the monitor is solid there's not much to worry about. Candy cabs in particular are typically well-built with good quality monitors, and of course switching out games, panels, etc. is so easy anyone can do it. Connectors are standardized, the monitors autosync and degauss, the buttons snap in, etc. so there's not much to maintain, and whatever's left is simple. The only real rule to live by is *always* discharge your CRT before operating on the chassis, if god forbid you ever need to. This is easy to do, just scary. The only thing that really sucks is finding replacement parts if necessary, which will either take ingenuity to make an American part work, or camping out on Yahoo Japan Auctions for 6 months until the part shows up.

I don't keep any cabs on my second floor, but a candy is much, much easier to move around versus a woody. Would be easy with 2 people, but make sure your doorway is at least 29 inches wide.

If you build your own SG, then you could afford both. Cab is great but if let's say you have it setup for vertical, and want to play your favorite horizontal or some MVS games, how often are you going to want to rotate that guy.

If you have a supergun, keep your cab vertical, and then your SG can be your horizontal setup.

Plus, with an SG you can take it with you to a gathering or someone else's house. So I say buy the candy and build a gun :)

You should probably check out these superguns made by SoNee. I believe he calls them PeeEssToo. The best thing is they are cheap and play all the games you are looking for. ;)

Seriously, xiao_haozi is right on. If you can, go both routes so you have hori and vert at your fingertips. If you CAN buy a candy cab locally. Do it. Do it now. There are plenty of people who would love to buy one but can't afford the costs from shipping, etc. If you've found one, snatch it up.

As far as video quality, the best way to go is to have scart out of your supergun and find a nice Sony PVM monitor or something equivalent. If you are getting your supergun custom made be sure to get several different video options (and not just component) because while component will look the best outside of scart, you may run across certain games that don't like your tv's video encoder.

Focus on getting a cab, if you need horiz and vertical - get 2 cabs.

My supergun is collecting dust now that I have access to a cab. Sitting down at a nice CP staring at 29" of RGB is the only way to play. I had my SG hooked up via component to a tube tv and while it looked good - it looks much better on RGB. The egret 2 have a rotate mech - I can flip the monitor and bezel in about 30 mins if I take my time. I do agree it is nice having both setups available at any given time - but trust me, focus that cash on a nice candy cab and never look back

I am really considering the candy cab now and possibly a supergun later on down the road. My other concern for the candy cab is getting it into my apartment. I just measured the open space in my doorway and it is exactly 29 inches. The doorway itself is 32 inches wide, but because of poor design and planning, the door can not be opened all the way (right next to the door is a closet and the closet sticks out about 5-6 inches which blocks the door from fully opening wide). I also live on the second floor of my apartment and was wondering how hard it is to carry a candy cab up a flight of stairs with 2 people?

I was also wondering about rotating the monitor in a candy cab and what parts of the monitor (and what do they look like) you need to stay away from to prevent electric shock.

Also, if anyone is interested in a candy cab or any fighting/bemani games (this is where I am trying to get a candy cab from), Tokyo Game Action in Winchendon Mass. is having an auction through super auctions June 6th. Moonjump and I are making a video showing off what they have to help them out. I will be sure to post a link to the video on the neo forums. For more info on the auction go to: www.TokyoGameAction.com

Thanks for everyone's help!

Wow I feel like a dumb ass! Just took a peg out now so, yeah. The doorway is no longer an issue. If I can afford the cab and Espgaluda then that will be what I plan on getting.

id play kof xi on ps2. it has more guys, and offers progressive scan (480p) which will look better than an aw in low res. you could also hook up the ps2 to the cabinet (low or high res) saving money, since aw's really aren't worth it.

this is one of the few cases id reccomend the port over the orignal. i dont think there are any problems with the ps2 version. though i think you need the japanese verion for 480p as the us one doesnt support it.

a cabinet with a monitor that can be easily rotated and trisynced (ie an egret 2) would be the best single cabinet you can own. though its always better to have more than one. lol.
