Konami Mystic Warriors PCB problem

I recently bought a Mystic Warriors PCB from a reputable seller on this forum.

When I try to boot up the board, the only thing that I get is a black screen with "ROM RAM CHECK" at the top.

-I have left the cab on for more than 15 minutes, and nothing happens, there are no hot or cold areas on the board after running it for awhile.

-There is a test switch on the PCB, pushing it does nothing (The monitor picture doesn't even jump).

-The board is very clean, there are no burns or scratches or obvious signs of a broken trace.

-I Reseated all socketed chips, and cleaned the jamma connection with a pencil eraser.

-The Test and Service switches on the cab do nothing (I am attempting to run this board in an Astro City).

I was hoping someone here might have some insight as to what the problem is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks guys, I'm pretty sure the -5v is hooked up, but I'll double check when I get home from work tonight.

I'm the one who sold him the game and I don't believe this game even use -5v, but I could be wrong.

Hold down the test button while powering it on... Keep it held down until it says EEPROM Data Clear. Should take a few seconds to do.

The -5v is hooked up on the jamma harness, and seems to test fine.

CM- I Held the test switch down while powering on, it initialized the EEPROM data, but just returns to the "RAM ROM CHECK" screen afterward. I did it a couple of times, using both the test switch on the board, and the test switch on the cab, getting the same results.

Thanks for all of the help, any other ideas?

Did you try pressing start or button 1 when you saw the RAM ROM CHECK screen?

Do you have a friend near by that has a cab or supergun to test the board out on? This way you can figure out if it's the board or your cab at least.

I'll give that a shot. I've run a wide variety of boards on this cab with no problem though (CPS2, PGM, AW, various Taito, Irem, Konami, and Capcom PCBs).

From my experiences, Konami boards are very picky about the +5v. Check your voltages and make sure it's getting exactly 5.0v. Anything less and it won't boot, anything more and you could fry it (been there, done that).

But yeah, Neogeofan12 actually tested the PCB on my Blast City a few weeks ago and it worked great, so I can vouch that it was working before he sent it.

I'm getting 5.05v at the jamma harness. Would the extra .05 be significant enough to cause a problem?

I don't know how to adjust this on my Astro. . .

You should be golden then. Come to think of it I'm not sure how to adjust an Astro PSU either. I'd imagine there's a hole with a potentiometer sticking out of it somewhere, who knows.

Well I'm out of ideas, sorry man. If you can't test it out on another cab I'd assume the board has bad RAM somewhere.

I tried the board in a friend's cab last night, and got the same results, so I'm now certain that it's the board, and not the cab.

ChannelManiac, is this something that you can fix?

Well, since the problem appeared on another machine, it's safe to assume you have a bad ROM and/or RAM on the board. As far as a fix, it would need to be replaced but how to find which one it is...don't have any idea. Sorry.

SO if it's an issue with the ROM chips, I don't know how to fix it.

Would reflowing the solder joints of the chips help?

Is there anyone on the board who can burn new roms?

Sometimes it works if you remove the chips and reseat them back into the socket

Joshua - did you ever manage to fix this? I've just repaired a Mystic Warriors board so perhaps I could help? One thing that's a possible cause is a knocked/lifted lef on one of the surface mount ICs.

Thanks I.G., I can't see anything wrong with the ICs, but I don't have the precision soldering equipment I think that I would need to fix that anyway. . .

I'd offer to pay you to fix the board, but I'm sure that shipping it back and forth to the UK would be crazy expensive.

Yeah, shipping to and from the UK would probably be prohibitive.

Channelmaniac here might be able to help though?

Do you have a logic probe? You might want to check the CPU clock to see if it's working. Could be the RAM is stuck high or something.

Thanks for the suggestions XX, but I've come to the conclusion that repairing the board is outside of my abilities and have sent it to Channelmaniac.
