LB2 MVS - crackly sound, crashes unibios

I've given this a clean with electrical contact cleaner and cotton buds, I guess I could clean it again but I find it odd that the intro music is slightly crackly (doesn't happen on any of my other carts) and when I press start initially, then start to skip the 'how to play' screen, it crashes every time, (brings up the unibios error screen, you know, the green dialog with debug info in).

You think it just needs more cleaning? I know my MVS board and other carts are fine, the cart isn't a boot and looks pretty clean already to be honest.

Probably another clean and it'll be fine, aww I wanna play it.

Does the cart check go ok from the unibios menu....and does the music play ok from the jukebox?

Not a bad idea, I'll try it now, I'll try it in home mode for shits and giggles too. its not completely crackly music, its fine 99% of the time, just a little crackle you can hear on extremes very slightly.

Let me try that a second anyway.

Cart check in unibios is fine, OK on all checksums.

In the jukebox player the sound is still a little crackly, its crystal clear but sometimes you can hear a little crackle .. weird.

Can't get it past the 'how to play' screen on homecart mode, JP MVS, or Euro MVS.

This ones a puzzler for sure, I guess it needs more hardcore cleaning.

This is a joke now, I've cleaned it twice, with a pencil eraser the second time, the contacts are clean as hell, and it still has a slightly crackly sound (on the first intro, but not the second), the in game demo is sweet as hell, crystal clear sound, sounds amazing in stereo.

Then I go to start the game, and it crashes every single time after I press start on the how to play screen.

wtf? I've tried it in all four slots, same in every one, unibios is 1.3, I'd better try it in my one slot really.

sigh

erm, is this a problem with my unibios 1.3 maybe?

it works fine in my old wood cab with a 1slot (standard bios)

:spock:

I guess its not the cart then, weird.

I'm just gonna put a normal BIOS in my four slot then I guess, I hardly use any of its features anyway.

I wouldn't think it would be the unibios... but that is odd indeed.

Indeed, all my other 39 carts work fine on the four slot with unibios 1.3

so why not this one? its weird, I'll try clearing backup data or something but I'm running out of options to try.

The cart is obviously clean and working fine if it works on my 1 slot

Well... could be that the 1 slot isn't being as sensitive to that game if it is still a tad dirty. Maybe. ?!?!

I would give it another good cleaning and try again... but other than that it seems very odd.

Funny, it could be one of the chips in the LB2 went bad. The one I have did the same thing except mine now sometimes plays but then resets sometimes and I get a Unibios error.

Oh and this was on a 2.3

I just cleared the backup RAM on the four slot, and bing.. cart now works fine.

its still got a *tiny* bit of crackle on the 1st intro, but apart from that the 2nd intro and in game is fine, so I don't know why it does that, I'll borrow my friends identical JP MVS LB2 and check how his fares. The cart is really, really clean though so I dunno about that.

thanks for your help, appreciate it.

I guess this is sorted now :)

I had a similar issue on LB2 (not w/ Uni).

Once I cleared the backup RAM via the test menu, the game worked fine.

OK, so mine was just crashing, it wasn't crackly audio, but it's something to try.

Yeah, thats what got mine working, odd really. I did play a couple rounds and it reset randomly, but that could be something else.

fucking MVS, sometimes I think about just going back to a one slot, but I like having stereo as its awesome, and four games at once.

Get a back up MV1FZ mobo and cut off a 4 pin floppy drive power connector off a old computer PS for stereo out.

Mono sucks and I don't think I could go back to it after playing MVS in full stereo glory. 1 cart loaded in at a time can suck also but it sure beats random resets.

Kernow, I know the crackle in the intro that you're talking about. It's normal. It happens during some stage music too. When I first bought LB2 I thought the cart was defective so I returned it and bought another and the new LB2 did the exact same thing. I'm not an expert with neo hardware issues but my guess is that it has something to do with the way the LB2 audio was programmed or maybe the speakers we're using just can't handle certain frequencies and we get these "pops" in certain spots.

I've got no idea why your cart is crashing. Mine doesn't do that. But I don't think the audio issue and crashing issue are related.

Thanks man, I thought it might be normal, maybe a limitation of the sound driver they used in that certain cart or something, it sounds stunning otherwise, I definitely can't give up stereo.

I have an MV-1AX here which is pretty much identical to an FZ apart from a hard soldered BIOS, I'll have to take a look at it to see where the stereo out connector is, I didn't realise there was one to be honest. My custom MVS adaptor -> JST sound harness might fit already too as its 4 pin.

I still haven't gotten around to finding out why my LB2 cart's sound is completely dead. But it's still on any board I put it in, and it actually killed the sound on SSIII when they were in a 2 slot together. Luckily that wasn't permanent.

My LB and SSIV both have been giving me sound problems on my 1 slot and on my 4 slot. So after reading this thread I decided to clear the backup RAM on the 1 slot and see if that helped. It cleared up the sound issue completely on LB and 99% on SSIV.

I'm excited to try it out later on the 4 slot.

Thanks for the thread.

If there's a problem with the sound program ROM on any one cart in a multi cart system (MV2/MV4/MV6) it will cause the Z80 sound CPU to lock up. Check the sound program ROM and connections to the card edge for problems.

Also, the UniBIOS will not calculate checksums for the sound program ROMs. Don't rely on it to tell you if that part of the cart is bad.

Yeah, figured that when it only checked three roms and said the rest were unused. I still haven't had a chance to open up the LB cart to check the board.

Funny, my LB1 does this and no other games do. When it does I just give it a good whack and it seems to just work again. I can't imagine why it would do such a thing. At first it was driving me nuts, all my games had crackles and then I found out a problem in my power supply, but then only LB1 had crackles. No Unibios here though, just a stock US bios.
