There are rumors that one could be coming out as early as this fall.

What is the truth to this?

Only PSP rumor I've heard is that the PSP-4000 may ditch the UMD drive.

Well they're probably gonna do it sooner or later. People forget it, but the PSP was actually a pretty successful system, sales-wise.

2010 is what I've read about the next PSP and no UMD.

I do not see how they could remove the umd especially without repercussion from the consumers. What else are the games going to run off of, the memory card. If they came up with a new media format then the future handheld would be so far removed from the present you couldn't call it the psp4000 because it would be a new system altogether.

I doubt that they'll ditch the UMD disc format for the new gen PSP but its possible..

Me and Chai were talking about this one time. I would freaking love a PSP2 that could play PS2 games the way PSP can play PS1. A handheld that I could load God Hand and Silent Hill 2 and MGS3 onto? Holy fuck, that would be great.

The way they could make PSP2 w/o UMD is to have the original PSP library available for d/l through a website. I heard they have already started to do that for the current PSP.

But otherwise, I don't know how they could accommodate those who already have PSPs and want to upgrade, but keep their game library.

I had 2 PSPs in the past and currently am waiting for news on the new PSP.

Hypothetically, could they just release a programme (like iTunes, for instance) which would allow a UMD to be slid into any computer, rip the disc into a proprietary "PSP-only image" format, and then use either a cable or card to transfer the data onto the PSP?--I realise that it would remove the whole "I don't have a computer to do that with" crowd, but in this day and age with the demographic of PSP owners, would that really be a problem?

I'm sure the reason why Sony hasn't done a UMD-less PSP yet is because they want to have some control over the distribution of their games. If they did have a program that ripped UMD data into PSP proprietary data, I'm sure people would abuse it by renting/buying a used UMD game, ripping it to their PSP, then returning it. Not saying people don't already do that with isos and whatnot, but this would make it too easy.

EDIT Bah... what the hell then... just bring out a UMD-less PSP already! I guess the other concern would be the people who don't have a computer or Wi-Fi capabilities. Will they have a way to own a physical copy of a game?

PSP Go!?

Some developers have gotten a look at it, and word is that it's coming fall of this year. I'm all for removing the UMD drive, providing Sony can make a robust selection of digital games. No drive means longer battery life.

The apparent lack of a second analog nub is kind of disheartening.

And the sliding screen should make it easier for those of us with bigger hands to play for longer periods without problems.

Touch screen? Camera? Yes please.

Hopefully we'll actually get to see it at E3 this year.

That mockup is pretty retarded because it has the trigger buttons up at the top, so you'd either have to really reach to press em or you might accidently start to close the slide open screen. I realize it is not official or anything, just pointing out what I see.

If this becomes the final design for the PSP2 it sure is ugly. As for digital media I say boo because physical media is so much better owning games on either cart or disc to play anytime gamers please. I won't be buying a PSP2 portable if games have to be downloaded and there might be a chance of it getting corrupted and losing the games (same PC) then your screwed and will need to redownload the games again which mean wasting more money. :oh_no:

Digital Media will definitely fail I say. :p
