I just got a candy cab the other day and the locks that hold down the control panel were missing the keys. I need to get in there to either re-attach a loose wire or replace it as the a button for the first player doesn't work. The guy I bought it from said I would have to drill through them to get them open. Having no experience breaking and replacing locks I called someone to do the job......big fucking mistake. When I called the lady she said they carry every type of lock and it should only cost around 80 bucks all together. 15 minutes later a guy called with a heavy Bulgarian accent saying "locksmith" hinting that he hated his life. He asked for the address again and the issue I had. "Not a problem" he said. He drilled the locks out but still wasn't able to get the thing open. After that I was charged 143 bucks for breaking 2 measly locks. 49 of that was to drive over there even though the place is 10 minutes away! Anyway, does anyone know how to open this guy up. Here's some pics of the cab and the work he did. All American Locksmith, what a joke. More like All American Ripoff not that I was expecting him to know how to open it because it's a arcade cabinet, but good lord!

Yeah man... drill bits are way cheaper! And it looks like he did kind of a crap job for that much money.

So the locks are totally out and still nothing?

Yep, and I even told him that he might need to completely drill through the lock but he kept saying that it's open and there's nothing else he can do.

Anyway to reach up behind the lock and uncrew it...From the open front panel or from looking in from the rear.

At the point where it is I'd probably try to pop it somehow with a screw driver as it's shot.

Having just drilled all the locks out of my candy cab myself I can say by those pic the locks are not fully drilled out. you should be able to see completely through it in to the cab.

The problem is just removing the pins allows the lock to turn which should allow you to remove the lock but sometimes in the act of drilling out the pins the the metal gets damaged and often times binds with the other bits of the lock which makes turning it impossible. The only sure way is to drill all the way through which removes the part of metal the cam attaches to and the cam will fall right off.

this is the side view of the in side of a partially drilled tubular lock. As you can see that is quite a bit of metal to go through until you hit the cam at the end.

I just went to home depo and bought a $30 drill and a $4 drill bit and drilled out the locks myself. It actually cost more to replace the locks then the supplies need to drill them out.

I would try to get my money back from that locksmith I mean he didn't even unlock it and you have pics of that.

Does the bit have to be real thick, cause I got one that's kind of thin? I just drilled all the way through and the lock is still there. Should I buy a thicker one?

Nah not too big I used a 1/4 size bit. Just make sure the bit you use is for metal and not for wood or mason work.

Wow, I suck at life. I can't even get it with a 1/4 bit. It feels like I'm drilling through the cab instead of the lock cause the whole think is shaking now....... someone come over and help!

when you punched through did you hear the cam fall off if not you might have to punch another hole or two into it until that happens. After the cam falls off you should be able to just open the panel as if it were unlocked. What size bit is that anyway the hole seems quite small.

edit: 1/4 should be plenty big enough.

shine a light in the hole see if you can see the cam or the bottom of the control panel.

Funny, I just drilled out the locks on my friends Aero City Control panel today. Used a Dewalt cordless drill and a 1/4 drill bit. Took about 5 minutes; the metal used in these locks is pretty soft. Sorry to hear about that ripoff locksmith. Can't believe he'd have the nerve to charge you even though he didn't get it open!

Yeah, you should have told him to get fucked, I wouldn't have paid a cent.

I don't understand why he thought he was entitled to any money when he didn't do the job he was asked to do.

Locksmiths are (dont want to be stereotypical but) some of the most untrustworthy people around. Way too many stories about way overcharging people cause their stuck and need the help

That's what I was about to post. NEVER pay for service that doesn't accomplish a job. The moment he said, "alright, I've done everything I can do. That'll be $$$." I would have told him to leave and just sue me. No judge would force you to pay for that. At least not full price.

You know the most surprising thing about this story is the fact that a "professional" locksmith was unable to get the cab open, yet a young girl was able to do it.
