Which cables do you guy's use for your s-video and stereo modded AES's?
I just got some monster cables for it, but didn't know if it truly matters the brand?

I like to just buy the connectors and make my own. I buy the connectors from digi-key usually (can get cheap up to real nice).

I always used cheap stuff from Monoprice and / or Radio Shack for my supergun. You won't see / hear any difference on old consoles like the AES.

OT: Where are you in Louisiana?

Monster cables are riddiculously priced. Stay away from them. Anyone that swears by them is brainwashed.

For an s-video cable you shouldn't be spending more than $5-7. Anything over $10 is just to increase the e-penis.

Shielding inside the cable can help, I'm not sure how much though. It's certainly something where people are brainwashed that they have to have expensive Monster cables. For something like s-video, you 2 internal wires, so internal shielding will keep the wires from interfering with each other. A better quality cable might make a little bit of difference, also depends on the quality and size of monitor you are using. If you have a really good monitor, you might get better cables for it.

For the AES, it's far more important what type of video output you use. To get better video than s-video, you would use the DIN RGB output, or an RGB->yuv(component) converter, or mod the AES to output yuv component.
As far as picture quality goes, the outputs go in this order, from worst to best:

1. RF
2. Composite(RCA)
3. s-video
4. Component(yuv)
5. Component(yuv)(with direct RGB mod, and using RGB->yuv converter)
6. RGB
7. RGB(with direct RGB mod)

No.'s 5 and 6 might actually be 6 and 5 respectively, not sure. Component using an RGB->yuv converter on a system with direct RGB mod, might actually be better than the RGB on an AES which hasn't been modded for direct RGB.

The big town of Ruston.:)
Cool. I keep trying to think of a way to do a gathering but with everyone ~4 hours apart, it's kind of tough. Maybe one of these days we can hit a critical mass of members from LA and have a meet. :)

Monoprice.com all the way. In brick-and-mortar stores you're overpaying.
