i just bought an mvs cart. when i opened the case, i saw that the chips had clear centers with what looks like little chips inside. this is obviously a bootleg cart, but what are these clear chips?

Those are eprom chips...

eprom - A programmable read-only memory that can be erased by exposure to ultraviolet light and then reprogrammed.

Now, that in itself does not mean that you've got a bootleg as SNK themselves used eproms from time to time. What is the name of the cart in question?

it's a puzzle bobble 2/bust a move again cart. the pcbs are in a black cart with a printed title label. the original label has been ripped off, but some of it is still under the new sticker - not enough of the original left to tell what cart it was.

Sounds like a boot... there are a bunch of them on eBay these days it seems. Here's the real deal:

yeah, mine's definitely different than that picture.

let me ask you this: since those eeproms are sensitive to ultraviolet light (hence that's how you are supposed to correctly erase them), what if i put a piece of black electrical tape over the "window"? will that help protect the chips over time?

My BAMA2 cart has a blue case so they do vary a little in case color.

Unless you take them out tanning everyday the Eproms should be fine. You can put the tape on, wont hurt it.

Tiptonium - Very nice.

The carts don't usually get a ton of light, but UV rays can damage them over time (like if you leave your games out on a shelf). I would recommend covering the window, it will not harm anything and should protect the chips atleast better then what they are now.
