I have a 2 slot hooked up to a supergun. Its running through s-video to a 42" LCD.

Most of the wording looks nice an crisp (credits, final score, your high score name, etc.)

how ever, the background images are all jaggie.

now I haven't played this game in a while (right now its my only game) but I don't remember it looking this bad.

Here is a video:

youtube link

notice right at the beginning "Neo Geo"

I kind of suspect the board, I picked it up a long while ago (fairly cheap) I only plugged it in to test that it work - then it got shelved until now.

also, the game is a Yanton special, its legit as I opened it up and cleaned the contacts.

oh, and the issue seems to be the same in both slots (which I have not cleaned)

any ideas?

Well you are taking video with a resolution of like 320x224 and scaling it up to like 1280x720 or 1920x1080 or so. That's a lot of scaling going on there, so its not going to be the smoothest thing in the world.

Oops wrote too soon :P
Ok upon actually watching the video that looks pretty jacked up :P Almost like the fields are swapped or something.

Could it be the supergun? It'd be nice if you could try out another game.

Nah I've seen this problem on MVS board before.

Unfortunately I cannot recall the fix but I'm sure one of our two MVS experts will. Bad logic chip somewhere is my guess.

I had that same problem on my 2nd AES and iirc it was a bad cap on a trace going to the LSPC or something. It was a ceramic cap.

ya, I would have suspected the sg, but, not ALL the images were bad, just the moving ones...

on, and I *booted up* the service mode, everything looks nice and crisp there....

This might have nothing to do with your problem but I also have a Yaton Blazing Star and it was having issues where some of the backgrounds had lines running through it. The gameplay was fine, just some of the intro graphics had the glitches. I tried cleaning it multiple times and still nothing. In the end I reflowed the solder to all the pins on the chips and that fixed it. This trick also fixed a sound issue I was having on a different cart. If you have another cart you should be able to better verify if it's the game or the board.

no, this kinda sounds like the same thing, the gameplay is great.

when I did open the cart, there were gouges on the top of some of the chips, kinda like a screwdriver scraped along there - don't know how that would have happened...

perhaps i'll try to reflow the solder.

thanks.

I have a very similar issue on one of my boards. I tried cleaning every connector this weekend, and it didn't help at all. It did fix the audio on my primary board (some rust in the ALPS volume potentiometer at least)

So let me get this straight, your suggestion is to melt the solder on all caps/chips/resistors and maybe place some extra solder on some of them? Just a section?

Here is a link to the pic of my board: MVS

And here is a sample of what I am getting: Metal Slug 3 and Neo Geo Logo

Artemio, you have a cartridge slot or cart that is dirty... or a bad trace coming from the cart slot.

If it's a 2 slot board then maybe one of the NE0-257 ICs has gone bad.

Logicdustbin: Clean the cart/slot. If that's not it then it looks like one of the low bit address lines for the graphics ROMs is messed up. Check for bad traces or corroded slot connectors.

cool.

some one local invited me over to test out some boards on the supergun, so I will be able to rule that out.

tomorrow I'll have a good look at the mobo

I have ruled them out as dirty since I have two boards, and only on one they look bad. So carts are definitively out of the question since they work ok on the other one.

I tried cleaning the slot as described in hardmvs, I used a toothbrush and the electronics cleaner, I disassembled the slot and clean everything, thoroughly and several times. I tested after each attempt and it wasn't corrected (I did help fix an audio problem caused by rust on the potentiometer in the other board though).

Then I guess I must have a bad trace, since it is not a 2 slot. It is a 1F I believe. Here is a pic from the back of the board if that might help.

Thanks for the info and your time.

Remove the frame from the top of the board and take a pic of that as well.

What are those 2 wires running to the Neo-B1?

Also, above the Neo-IO it looks like a bad plate through above the 33 marking.

I have no idea about the wires.. they were there already, and I thought they were standard although they did catch my eye. Do you think I should take them off?

Regarding the Neo IO chip, that seems like an artifact from the flash... Here's another pic I took yesterday form the board. Thanks for your time and help.
