What specific console would you use?

I'm thinking the Game Boy Lite.

And are all of the RPG's backed up with a battery or ROM?

There are a bunch of titles I want to get back into - Final Fantasy Legend II is close to the top.

Revenge of the Gator
Kwirk
Altered Space
Super Mario Land
Gargoyles Quest
Nemesis

And a LOT more...

Actually, I'll trade DS stuff for original Game Boy stuff... Click Here!

Unless you really want original gb hardware I'd say the gbasp is the best choice.

If you want an rpg, pick up Dragon Warrior III. It's one the best on the system.

I actually play all my old gameboy on the original fat black and white system :) ....but I am a sucker for nostalgia....so I would recommend that. But the gameboy lite/pocket is cool too.

As far as original games go, definitely check out the Zelda, Metroid and Kid Icarus games. I also like the Game & Watch gallery games too. Also check out the RC Pro Am game.

Gameboy lite is very cool, but I am pretty sure it is not compatible w/ Gameboy color games...which include the awesome Zelda games Oracle of Ages/Seasons. I think there was also a GBC Perfect Dark game which was pretty fun. So either in addition to a Gameboy/Lite (or perhaps instead), you may want to get a Gameboy Color too....they are super cheap nowadays :)

I would second the GBA-SP (or an afterburnered GBA). If want to be a real purist about it, the GameBoy Light is a good choice.

After that, the rest of them don't have any sort of built-in light. Maybe a GameBoy Color with a worm-light would be good if you're on a real tight budget (which I assume you're not if you're thinking the Light is a top choice).

As far as I can recall, all the GameBoy games (supporting gamesaves) are battery backed up. Of course those games are old and the batteries may be dying. Though, if you're handy, you should be able to replace the battery.

My daughter recently started playing my old Pokemon Yellow on my old GameBoy pocket. The save still works fine.

Elevator Action - Much better than the arcade or NES version. Has better music, extra weapons, and war cats that try to eat you.

Balloon Kid - Platformer sequel to Balloon Fight on NES. Fun boss fights and tricky obstacles. That evil fish from Balloon Fight make a return as well.

Q-Billion - If you like puzzle games, this is a good one. The idea is to reduce stacks to simpler forms, but doing it requires a fair amount of strategy. The music is kinda catchy too.

Gradius: The Interstellar Assault - Excellent sequel to Nemesis. Slightly longer and tougher, and with great music.

Boomer's Adventure in ASMIK World - An overhead action game where you find a key to advance to the next level. Dig holes to bury enemies, or find weapons to kill them with. Gets pretty tough as it goes along.

The Castlevania Adventure - The controls are a little clunky, but it's a worthy platformer if you have the patience for a ruthlessly hard game. The music is some of Game Boy's best.

Man, this thread is making me nostalgic too. I loved my old Game Boy — I can't believe I lost it somewhere along the years. I gto mine when I was a kid back around '91 or so, too.

Anyways, my favourite games were Metroid II, Gargoyle's Quest, the Final Fantasy Legend games (II is my favourite, but I and III have their moments for sure) and perhaps my very favourite, Final Fantasy Adventure. That was a great game back in the day, and I bet it's held up well. Just talking about it makes me want to play it (at least I still have my old games ;)).

I also like the gameboy player for GC. Plays everything but DS. Gamestop has them for $15 last time I looked.

The Lite's a good choice.

Actually been looking for the Godzilla puzzle game...never could beat last puzzle when I did own it.

Mega Man 5. All of them on the Game Boy are okay (the second one has new music -- kind of catchy), but the fifth one is all original.

I owned a Lite, it has the best of the monochrome GB screens, it's fantastic. In fact just the other day I was thinking of how much I miss mine. Get one for the exclusive-to-Japan factor and since they seriously kick ass. I think I have some pictures of the screen from when I was selling mine, if you want a few I'll dig them out of my desktop.

Games I liked (other than the obvious ones like Dr. Mario, F1 Race, SML2, Tetris...):
RC Pro Am
Lock 'N Chase
Radar Mission
Kirby's Star Stacker
Donkey Kong 94 (gets hella frustrating sometimes though)

RC Pro Am is a really fun racer that isn't too complicated, it's arcade-y. Lock 'N Chase is an awesome maze game (ala Pac Man) with a lot of its own gameplay and style elements; in terms of Pac Man clones I place it on par with Crush Roller on the NGPC. Radar Mission is a little-known (kinda) game with a nice Battleship game and a submarine game that I thought was pretty neat. Star Stacker is an awesome puzzle game, I ended up being really good at it a long time ago. DK94 you probably know already but it slips under peoples' radars, so I thought I'd remind you.

If I think of more sometime I'll post again.

edit:
Also, Bonk's Adventure, and Elevator Action (seconding Zenimus)

I enjoyed that one, but Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge is a huge improvement.

Donkey Kong is awesome, and I second Belmont's Revenge. There are a lot of Game Boy Color games that were really good too...I still think Super Mario Bros DX is better than the NES version they put out for the GBA.

Mercenary Force was cool for a little bit.
Great Greed was a cool eco friendly RPG.
I really enjoyed Final Fantasy Legend III.

I use a GBA SP, so I can use the light to better see the game. The original GB was cool, but without light, it's not very practical. Or sometimes I use my GB Player, but I prefer portable gaming :)

The games I prefer :

- Final Fantasy Adventure (best game on GB !)
- Final Fantasy Legend II (almost the best game on GB ;) )
- Metroid 2
- Dragon Warrior I & II
- Dragon Warrior III (if you include GBC games) : one of the best RPG I played !

I like the original 'cause it has that yellowing effect that brings me back to that Metroid II TV ad that I actually liked a lot.

WiiWare-World is reporting that the DSi will offer a VC store for GB, GBC and GBC, so you may just want to see what games are released. They are suppose to play right off the SD card and that would make sense, since the DSi dropped the GBA slot.

If you want to play GB today, then an SP + Gameboy Player is the best option. That way you have back lighting, full compatibility with Color games, and you can play on the big screen if you want. I've just recently taken an interest in GB again and I started playing Dragon Warrior 1&2 for the first time

Fav Games

Metal Gear Solid (plays like the classic MSX games)
Metroid II
All of the Zelda games
Pokemon games :p
R-Type DX
Dr. Mario

Where is all the Kirby's Pinbal Land love? One of the last original GB games worth playing imo.

Belmont's Revenge is the best handheld Castlevania, period. Also one of the best handheld games, PERIOD.

Praying Hands deserves an updated remix for a new Vania:

Absolutely incredible what Konami was able to pull off with the GB's sound hardware.

The Mega Man games are also different enough from their console counterparts to warrant a purchase...honestly, Mega Man IV has my favorite Wily boss fight out of every MM game.

Both Contras are cool, too -- Contra III is better than you'd think it is.

I also really enjoyed James Bond 007 and will never understand why EGM gave it some of the lowest scores they had ever given a game at the time. It's like Zelda, but better (imo).
