My MD2 makes a loud buzzing noise when I start it up...the sound is also very low, I have to turn up the volume a lot when I want to hear something.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? I tried 2 differtent TV sets and it's the same with both...

It may be a bad cable but it could also be that the electrolytic capacitors in the sound cirquit of the MD2 board, need to be replaced with new ones.

Might as well shotgun them for the sake of a dollar.

May do this to mine too actually, I don't think it sounds quite as good as it used to.

Worn electrolytic capacitors are indeed a big issue in many old machines. I also collect old computers like ZX Spectrum, C64, Amstrad 6128 etc, and replacing ALL electrolytic capacitors is the first thing I do to them since manufacturers didn't use the best quality there was back then to cut back on the cost...

I have also replaced all caps on the psu board of my Dreamcast. Did the same thing on my Turbo grafx-16 console (all electrolytic caps were replaced with fresh ones).

Bad sound due to a worn capacitor is also a known issue on the Game Gear.

I would replace them all if I were you.... Its not easy to know which ones are responsible for your problem and afterall it depends on the MD board model you may have.

To replace them it takes some soldering skills so if you don't know how to handle a soldering iron, find someone who can and is willing to help you.

The electrolytic caps are the ones that look like vertical cylinders. The capacity (uF) of the cap you replace must me the same and its voltage can be same or higher but NOT lower.

Replacing the caps should solve it... i replaced all caps on my GameGear today, I got louder sound and brighter LCD picture.

FinalNEO: If you have to ask how to replace the capacitors, I very strongly recommend you don't attempt to do it.

Desoldering something even as simple as capacitors takes skill and experience to do without damaging/destroying the board.
