I bought a Japanese Mega Drive Model 1 today which was quite dirty, so when I got back home, I unscrewed the screws at the base and took the top shell off. This is my first time ever opening a Mega Drive Model 1 console, or any console for that matter... I am quite a butter finger with electronics. As I was trying to slide the LED light's pins out of the plastic clip which connects it to the two wires attached to the motherboard, I broke the solder of one of them so the LED is no longer functioning. In the end I got the top shell off, but I'm guessing that now I will need to buy a soldering iron if I ever want to fix the LED light. Sadly, the LED light is the main reason I went with the Mega Drive 1 over the 2.
Now since I got the top shell off, I thought I was all set to wash it. I put the shell in a tub of water and soap and it cleaned up quite nicely. I neglected to remember one minor detail though... Though the LED is cased in the ring surrounding the cartridge slot, the backside of the top shell which has two metal prongs attached to the LED runs out of two small holes which have room for water to leak in. When I put it in the tub, I am sure that water got into these holes and hit the LED. Are LED's cased in something? If water hits it, are they destroyed? I think that it will be a bitch to put a new LED in a model 1 Mega Drive because the LED itself is housed inside a plastic space especially for it, which there is no way to access without cutting through the plastic.
Anyway, I hope you all can understand my problem through my description. I tried to make it wordy since I don't have pictures. Thanks in advance for the help.
