Hi guys,

I've been thinking this should probably be my last try at this. I've already killed\maimed\defiled too many otherwise decent boards. What I want to do is get this unit running from the +5 volts only.

I'm thinking the 1st thing I should probably do is desolder that thing in the 1st picture attached to the giant heatsink. What do you guys think? I'm hoping to do this step-by-step so as I can also help any other beginner's that want to do the same on a mv1-c.

As an aside, I'm selling the encoder pictured here - pm me w\ an offer if you're interested. Thanks.

Yup, desolder the audio amp, remove the heatsink. Cut the 2 traces on the back. You can also remove some of the caps as you won't need them anymore. It's in my wiki I think.

Excellent. I'm going to start super-slow. I'll shoot for removing the audio amp. Thanks XX.

You can remove that stuff as it's unnecessary on a consolized unit but you don't have to: they may well stay where they are and you could perform the stereo mod just as well. You don't even need to cut traces.

Don't remove it. Leave the unit in as original condition as possible.

Ugh, guys I wish I had seen your posts before I went & removed it.

What do you guys think I should do next? Thanks.

Since I know you need as much space as possible, go ahead and remove caps AC5-AC10

Ok,

I think I successfully removed AC5-AC10.

What should I attempt next? I also have a question. Now that the potentiometer is gone, how to we control volume?

As far as the pot goes it's for the amp as far as I know. The audio from the chip will be line level. Go ahead and tap the left and right channels of the chip.

DO NOT overheat the chip.

Ok, I will give this a try tonight. Any advice on how to make sure I don't overheat the chip? I have a 15 watt soldering iron. Thanks?

I usually just add a dab of solder to each pin first then solder a tinned wire to each pin. I've seen some people try to solder bare wire onto the pins with solder. It's always easier if you solder the wire first then solder it to the pin. Well at least for me it is.

Hi, I did as instructed. I hope this is working out. What should be the next step? Cutting the traces on the back? If so, how do I know if I've dremmeled them enough? Thanks again.

I usually cut the traces but MKL says you do not need to and I trust him as he has never let me down on tech knowledge.

Just connect those 2 wires to where you want your audio to go, ie panel mount phono jacks or whatever.

That's pretty much it for the audio. All you need to do now is wire up an encoder if needed and wire up the power and ground.

Xian: Vaguely related question. I've got an MV2F. Right now the cabinet is only wired up with one speaker. The leads feed straight back to the Jamma harness hooked to the back of the board. Does the 2K have stereo off the harness there? If it does, all I should need to do is get a second speaker and run ground to a shared ground and the other terminal to the other side of the harness, right?

Thanks

malkie13: Yes, the 2F has stereo output on the harness.

Your theory on how to add the second speaker is 100% correct.

Excellent!

I got another part shipment from Bob Roberts last Friday, jamma connectors among the bits. Some time this week I'll be crimping up that other hot from the jamma harness and running it up to a new speaker. I'm actually going to be adding an inline switch to the shared ground for the speakers, as well as a volume control knob that can be accessed externally. The cabinet will eventually make its way home. Since I'm also running a set of headphone jacks to the control panel, I wanted a way to both adjust the speaker volume, as well as completely cut it off for when the headphones are in use.

Hi,

So far my status is no sound. I wonder if the lines do need to be cut? I really would like to get sound.

How are you connecting the sound? Left and right to center pins and outers to ground.

Also make sure you are playing as some attract modes might not have sound.

Ok, we'll I will take some pictures & show you what I'm doing tonight. As far as the different games go, I can take a picture of them & if you think one of them doesn't have the silent attract mode then I can test w/ that cart. Thanks again for your help.
