so friday night, all was well, getting drunk playing kof 03, then the screen quickly flashes white, about five minutes later another flash of white, and 3 minutes past that WHITE! then nothing. monitor is still powered, illuminated black with thin scan lines still flowing upwards through it, music and controls still responding from the neo geo mvs itself.
what the hell happened to my beautiful nanao monitor??? can i fix it?
HELP!

sounds like your video signal is missing-could be gameboard or chassis problem
only way to prove it is check the wiring and try a different game board

yep i have had this problem many times, only been an arcade tech for 23 years-thats why i said what i did-you need to prove the video signal first otherwise you should be looking a bad solder joints on the monitor chassis or a problem with the contrast pot
i am not sure what chassis is in there but i would expect a nanao ms8-check the electrolitic cap on the neck card its a 10uf 250v of which i must add is thee most common fault on this age chassis as well as a bad crt socket connection

would this have been replaced during cap kit? i performed a cap kit on this monitor about 2 years ago. i appreciate your input greatly, i just regret to say that while i have enough knowledge to install a cap kit, my knowledge is rather iffy beyond that point.

Well check the brand/style of the caps. Is the one on the neck board the same as the ones on the chassis?

If it is not predominantly one colour (R,G or B) it is not likely to be a video output problem. More likely a dry solder joint or broken track/loose connection somewhere effecting the three drives simultanously - what happens if you tap around the monitor chassis or flex the pcb ?

Usually if the electro on the crt base used to smooth the video output stages 180 volt rail (typically 10 uF 250 volts, as grantsprain said) has dried out it would result in low dc supply causing the brightness to increase.
I dont think that is the case. There should be around 150-160 volts on the red, green, blue output transistor collectors.
That electro would usually be replaced with a cap kit job.

It is possible that the game board is faulty and we are jumping to conclusions on the monitor - try another board in there before anything else.

Bottom line is if your not sure about the monitor and safety issues associated get your local TV repair guy to check it out - we are a long time dead.

im familiar enough with electronics to know the safety issues so were good on that.
i went ahead and hooked my pgm 2 into the cab, and still no video showing, same exact results, so its definitely a monitor issue.

i located the 10uf 250v cap on the neck chassis, and it was indeed replaced when i performed the cap kit 2 years ago. from looking around at all the caps i could see that i had replaced on the actual monitor pcb, and all the solder joints on the neck chassis, everything looks good. no bad solders, or blown capacitors or anything that stands out immediately as being damaged. everything still looks solid.
what is my next step now???

whats worrying me is that it could be the custom ic that is basically the video decoder,if it is then there are no replacements although jomac repairs them

do you have a photo of you chassis or know the exact model number

i would have to say it is either identical or very very very similar to the MS8-26A 15-25 K.

those chassis have the custom ic,i have an awful lot of ms8 monitors but i have never seen the custom ic fault in the flesh so i am not 100% sure if it is that causing the problem-but from my reckoning and reading the schematics it could be
someone that would know for certain is joey at jomac as he is recognised as the oracle of nanao monitors
i think you should email him with a description of what has happened as he will tell you straight away whether it is that ic
sorry i can't be of more help

This issue seems to be on the IC chip. Many ms8 suffers from this, and no longer obtainable, very hard to come by here in my country nether, since nanao quit offering this CRT business. I know that in some day you'll meet the same ploblem on this chip sooner or later, so better hurry collecting same chassis. About 80% or more of what I handled met this issue:oh_no:

you could fit another ms8 chassis but finding one will be difficult, you can also fit other make chassis but depends on the crt size and yoke readings

the ms8 nanao 26" yokes are very special I was told so even if you find another ms8 chassis it will need to the 26" version-i think you should consider contacting jomac and getting this repaired by him
