Should I get a 360 or go for the Supergun/PCB route

I been thinking a lot as of late of what to buy next, and I've been thinking between a Japanese 360 and the Supergun route.

The 360 has the shmup ports, but IMO the hardware sucks, I know I'll be buying a lot of games that the more I'll buy the less playtime it'll get. Plus I hate DLC to boot.

The supergun route while the supergun will cost a lot (depends, I own a XRGB2 and I would like to get one that outputs Composite, S-Video, Component, and EU SCART) the PCB prices aren't too bad (I won't be getting the newer PCBs but I can afford Ibara at least with my budget). Of course I'll own just a few PCBs whch I know I will play the hell out of. But of course with PCBs they are a pain to travel with (I'm in college so I do move around).

Honestly I don't know what to buy next. I had tons of shmup ports and I sold most of them since I never get to play most of it. I'm leaning towards the PCBs since I would love to get into cabs in the future and having my mouth getting watered up with the idea of owning a Toaplan board.

But I don't want to make a mistake so I really would like to go thru with this with some input. :)

Could make your SG and save some cash.
Really depends on what games you want to play doesn't it?!

If you build a gun, maybe you could budget more and wait a little longer and just get both and then be more selective in what/how many games you get.

I've found that in the past year my 'new' systems have been getting less and less play time while my old systems are getting hard use. So I would say it is really up to you: what games do you want to play, what games do your friends want to hang out and play (if they all have new game XYZ for the 360 and want to all play it, will you wish you could play as well), do you have the space and money for PCBs, do you have the tender love for PCBs... etc

Lastly, if you are really going to get into cabs, then having an SG now gets your setup going ahead of time.

I guess in my mind, I don't see how PCBs would have lasted in my apt in college.

I can't build a gun, I'm not tech-savy enough for that. I only play shooting games for a few years now since it's pretty much the only type of games that I enjoy (like the Toaplan/NMK/Psikyo ones). I also play some arcade puzzles games and arcade platformers like Osman/Cannon Dancer, Dyna Gear, ThunderFox, Edward Randy, along others. I don't play any of the games that my friends play since it's all RPGs which I can't stand plus stuff like DMC3/4 which I found it to be meh.

In other words I only play arcade games, period.

I have enough space for PCBs, and I take care of everything. :)

Plus my friends would actually think it's cool to have arcade boards in the room and thus make more room for it. :)

Then sounds to me like you really have your mind made up ;)

Any particular SGs you've been eying up?

http://www.multimods.com/ Would recommend checking there for something one-off if that's what you want!

There's one guy on shmups who makes custom made SGs and he told me he can make one that outputs in SCART and can play picky PCBs like the later Toaplan ones and some of the Sebiu ones.

Check multimods though too... He has a bunch ready to be bought and from what I've heard he is pretty awesome about making stuff exactly for what you want/need.

Good luck!

Yeah Dean doesn't build them to order anymore and I don't believe he has them on hand ready to ship. I have one of his guns and the build quality is really up there. He's always been cool to me, but he's moved on and I wouldn't hit him up about any projects.

As for the Xbox 360 Vs Supergun, thats going to boil down to what games you want to play. As of right now, I'm playing Street Fighter IV more than any of my arcade games, so the xbox is getting heavy use. I noticed some of the games you listed would alone cost about as much as the xbox console. If you're aiming for a big collection of fancy PCB's, you probably won't be able to afford some of them for years unless your big ballin'.

Hmm thanks for that update. I wasn't aware he was moving on. Checked his site not long ago and saw he had a bunch of guns still listed for sale but I didn't see when the last update was. Thanks.

Agreed.... everyone I know that has gotten into PCBs (myself more recently included) has invested a lot more than in traditional consoles. Granted you can throw a load of money in anythign... but in general those nice shooters are gonna probably hit you much much harder as well as being a mission to find.

As much as I love my 360 I have to go with the SG 'cause you know you wanna get into the PCB's, it's like a curiosity that will never be satisfied with having a jp 360. Get it out of your system get the SG, get some PCBs you know you wanna play big time and away you go. The best thing is that PCb's and SG can always sell unlike 360s even though a jp360 might be easier to sell. So far only Cave, Otomedius and Raiden IV are the only reasons I would own a jp360, but still I know I'd be playing my PCBs way more, for instance now eith SFIV I've been playing my 360 none stop, but I had some Donpachi runs on my cab along with some other PCBs and I can't regret ever having them at all.

pcbs already 10+ years old will probably outlast the very last production 360.
