"Dead spots" on a monitor

Hi everyone.

I just bought a monitor and had it shipped to my house. I'm powering it up for the first time and there are some small black spots on the screen where the pixels do not light up. About 4 or 5 in total. The monitor frame was all bent up when it arrived. I have a replacement for the frame, but I know it was a rough journey.

Does anyone know if there is any fix for this problem? Or at least what caused it? I'd really like to save this tube because its otherwise brand new.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like some damage on the mask. How old is the monitor ?
(If it's a damaged mask, it's not repairable by DIY means..)

You have some missing phosphor dots on the inside of the crt :(.

Quite rare, usually see it on regunned CRTS, when the air is sucked in it can dislodge phosphor dots on the inner surface of the screen.

London to a brick, your new monitor has a regunned CRT. Send it back.

General rule; one or two near the edge of the screen is acceptable, more than 2 is not. One in the center would also be considered unacceptable.

If the set has been dropped you would more likely end up with colour purity errors as a result of a distorted shadow mask than missing phosphors imho.

thchardcore: Did you use a net-based guide to adjust the yoke? If so, please share the URL.

Here are some pics I shot of it. I circled the spots that aren't lighting up.

ttooddddyy - Yeah, it has lots of discolouration all over the tube. Likely due to a drop. I didn't mention it earlier because I figured it should be a simple fix.

thchardcore - Nice work man! I need to be recapping my MS9 soon as well. The geometry on my MS9 is not perfect.

Only from what I read and trial and error. There was an all text guide, no pictures, describing the process as well as convergence (which I will never fuck with again) in detail. I'll see if I can pull it with some keyword searches on google. It's really just a matter of carefully (with huge ass rubber gloves) undoing the bond on the slips between the tube and yoke, repositioning for better geometry in the corners and straighter lines, and then pushing towards the tube to close the gap which screwing the fastener down again. I'll have to take some pictures.

Mike

*PS don't try this at home, or anywhere for that matter.
