MVS consolization

Working on setting up my 2 slot MVS (in terms of consolizing). I have most of my parts all set and mainly just going over in my head exactly how/where everything will go. I definitely want to do all my attachments back off of the connector so I can always use in my cab at a later date and to keep things neater looking.

I was wondering:
1) Does anyone (looking at you Xian Xi :) ) have any shots of where they did there attachments up the traces?

2) Since this is a 2 slot I think I understand it that all I really need to do is wire up everything and run the video to the encoder (have a neobitz), the audio to some rca jacks, and then power it from a jameco supply with connector (picked up the one Xian Xi mentions in his 1 slot how-to)... am I missing any audio, or otherwise, mods (do I need to do the audio as you did Xian Xi on my 2 slot or can I just take my right and left channel audio off the edge connector right to rca jacks)?

3) Any suggestions people might have from their experience? My plan is to keep it simple. Probably paint up the metal cover black.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide and any insight you might throw my way from your endeavors.

you can solder your RGB lines to the 8.2k resistors just behind the jamma edge where it connects to. From left to right it's Red..Green...Blue. V sync can be tapped from the right side of the 470 resistor top left of where you soldered the Red Line.

+5v can be tapped from the leg of the capacitor connected to the +5v pin on the jamma edge.

Ground is all over. you should be able to get it from anything connected to the giant green trace.

I'd recommend trying to source a psu that does +12v along with +5v. I modded my 2 slot for +5v sound and the output is really low. Plus it makes the headphone jacks rather useless.

On the 2 slot since there are 2 versions, one with the dips on the front and the 2nd with dips on the left side of the board.

For the video you take the signals before the resistors on the RGB lines and the sync I believe is after the resistor(470ohm resistor iirc).

For the audio you can either tap the headphones or tap it from the 2 resistors close to the slider.

Okay great hints guys...thanks.

Xian Xi - I can do this to rca with the 5V psu without the audio mod to bypass the onboard amp? And as for the type...I'll have to double check on which version.

Yes according to a few members you can get the audio off the headphone with just +5v running.

If I were to use a small psu from a mini itx box I had would I be able to just wire up the SPKR L+ and SPKR R+ to the center pins of some RCA jacks and then ground to the shields for audio?

Or should I just stick with a 5V jameco psu and try to grab off the headphones (and then if not do the audio mod)?

[EDIT] I was searching around for jameco psu with the 12v and 5v (tabletop variety) and seems they don't have the sc200 or the sw300 anymore. But I did find this guy.... PWRSPLY,TBL,REG,23W,5VDC/
1.011A,12V/1.496A,-5V/.043A,

What about using that guy so I can run the onboard audio amp etc... seems to have +12V, +5V, and -5V ?

Alright I think the jameco PSU in my last post is the one I'm going to go with so I can get stereo off the edge (w/ the 12V hooked up).

I think that one should work.
Output Voltage (Volts) 5
DC Cord Length (feet) 6
Power Indicator No
Length (inches) 4.9
Width (inches) 2.7
Height (inches) 1.5
Color Black
Output Voltage 2 (VDC@A) 12V@1.49A
Output Voltage 3 (VDC@A) -5V @ 0.43A
Output Current (AMPS) 1
Power (W) 23
Input (VAC) @ Hz 100-240@47-63
Plug Type 5-pin DIN Male
Input connector 2-prong

Checked finally... this one is an MVH MV2F that has the dips on the left side.
Does that make a difference for much though? When I checked hardmvs they only had a single 2 slot listing.

Another stupid questions...sorry...:oh_no:

When you guys wire off of the psu panel jack....how do you distribute your power from the posts? Do you use a small distributor block or do you just splice off smaller gauge wire? Just curious what people did that they found to be clean and effective.

If you can fit a dist block go for it but on a consolization you dont really need one as you can tap +5v from all over the board.

Hmm... so you just hook up one +5v and one ground near the mvs edge and then feed the others off traces elsewhere?

Depends on the consolization but usually either the edge or something that runs +5v if I want to keep the edge clean but if it's enclosed then I use the jamma edge but I use both one on the top and one on the bottom. I try to use at least 20awg wiring but prefer 18awg for power and ground, force of habit.

Forgot to say that for a 2 slot I use the power regulator to connect the +5v line.

Ah ok I see. That was how I was thinking of doing it just wasn't sure about splitting off two or more +5V from the panel mount psu connector.

Power regulator? You mean just like a little 5V regulator to make sure it's exactly 5V? (think I actually have one with a tiny heat sink laying around)

And do you think this guy would work well to grab +12V as well so I can get audio off the edge (which woudl be post amplification then)?

I think that one should work.

Thanks for the help xian xi !!

Oh and yeah... I was planning to use some 18 for the power and grounds and then 20 for the video and audio .... the controls are already all setup to onboard connections with this 2 slot (awesome...didn't know they had those... saves a lot of work that way.)

Oh awesome...I didn't know that you meant on onboard one...so you go there and skip the edge...

I think I got ya now. Thanks appreciate the picture too!

.... oh do you run your 12v through there (or do you not even use 12v usually)

When I did my first 2 slot I used 3 of the pins, 1 for ground,1 for +5v and 1 for +12v. I can't remember the pinout but it shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Perfect....and since the controllers ports are already onboard on these then I guess all I have to do then is video and audio.

Thanks! Hopefully get things rolling soon.

The only other thing I did to the 2 slot was bridge the select and coin buttons, this way I didn't have to make coin buttons but of course you can always make it freeplay instead.

Yeah I haven't decided on those bits yet. I do have a universe bios for it so I guess really I don't need them but I may just throw in a test switch into the console portion and then select on the sticks (since I am building the sticks now and plan to use them for more than just this).

You don't need a test switch if you have a unibios, you can access the test menu from a key combination.

I noticed in your wiki entry you said:
"Once you confirm which pin is the +5v go ahead and connect it to a power switch, you can use a rocker switch for this or whatever you choose. From there connect the power to Jamma PINs 3,4,C,D. And the ground to Jamma PINs 1,2,A,B. "

So do you not connect the set of grounds on the opposite end of the edge (27,28,e,f and also 14 for video ground)? And I think my last question for now (if you don't mind - sorry...), if I'm using 12V off my powersupply as well, do I have to run both 12V and 5V from the psu to the switch and then off the other leg of the switch to the jamma edge (or voltage regulator)?

Yup, that's it. But on my 2 slot I did I only ran the ground from the PSU to a big spot on the mobo in the top left corner of the board, I figured that was sufficient. But ya for the +5 and +12v you need a DPST switch. But are you using a 5 pin din socket on the 2 slot for the PSU?

Mine was PSU>5 Pin DIN socket>DPST switch>Power Reg thing.

Ah okay yeah that sounds good.

Yeah I have a 5 pin din connector to mount in the case to connect the psu. So then I'll just wire the +12 and +5 to a DPST switch...then to the power regulator (or pin edges...but I like the idea of going right to the power regulator if I figure out the pinouts on that guy...makes things less cluttered then).

And the ground...that's a good idea. In all honestly...yeah I'll admit to being pretty dumb with this :oh_no: ... I wasn't sure on the mvs edge what all was going in and going out. Obviously the video grounds and signal and audio are all going out of the edge...but I wasn't sure if any grounds or power came off the edge to go to the CP controls etc. I would think also the video ground comes out but that could probably just come right off metal on the board closest to where the video encoder is mounted?!

Thanks again for all your help... I feel bad abusing your knowledge and time. Have been a great help so far and think I'm on track now to have this thing not go up in flames when I connect it all up.

On a 2 slot most people want to keep the edge clean. Presentation I guess, unless it's enclosed of course.
