Wait, if you can put a PlayChoice PPU into an NES...

This is based on the topic in Tech Support on turning home consoles into Jamma compliant systems.

If you can install a PlayChoice PPU (with RGB) into an NES, wouldn't that mean that if you tacked on a Neobitz or similar RGB to NTSC encoder you could theoretically have a Component NES?

It would be a lot of work for such a small improvement but wouldn't it technically be possible?

Yes, but I'd try a jrok rather than the Neobitz.

I've had a Vs. Duck Hunt PPU for about a year now that I'd like to throw into my NES, but haven't got around to it. I was going to use an S-Video only jrok, because you really don't need more than that for such an old system.

Yes it is possible.

In fact, in my JAMMA NES I hook it to my TV via a supergun I built - the supergun has a JROK in it. The NES looks great via component. Although, you would still need some sort of RGB amp to boost the colors as they are very dark without an RGB amp.

I was actually thinking of doing a NES with a JROK in it - but a JAMMA NES just made more sense at the time

I thought about doing a JAMMA NES (already have done an RGB NES).

But I got this dead Playchoice board... So I have been thinking of cutting off the edge connector and doing a Playchoice NES.

is it true that the colors for alot of games are off if you do the RGB mod on a NES?

I have asked this question on the NESDev forums and yes, it should work to be able to get RGB off the NES this way. However, you need to have a PC10 PPU and not the VS Unisystem PPU, because the VS system has the wrong pallette. Technically the PC10 PPU has some slight pallette differences, but that's mainly due to the changes needed for the NTSC color burst, and one shade of black is replaced with a very dark grey, which apparently is only visible in 1 or 2 Famicom games. You would need to be totally OCD to notice the difference.

EDIT: I agree with the RGB amp, you will almost certainly need this.

and forgive me for my ignorance but where am I going to find a PC10 PPU? Certain games have that one correct?

Buy a Playchoice-10 arcade game board to get the chip. ;)

Hell, I have some NTSC to RGB decoders here from the old laserdisc games. I'm tempted to try one to see how well it works with the old NES.

I have done it (the rgb mod using RC2C03B VS ppu)...

From what I have been told, the VS (RC2C03B) and PC (RP2C03B) PPU uses the same pallet.

The mod isn't very hard...

I've read that, but I have read conflicting information, and heard of these mods going sideways. Any guide that you used as reference?

I am in the process of making my 2nd jamma nes. There is a fair amount of work involved, but its not to hard.

The nfg forum post has enough info to do the mod

Look here for PPU info
http://johnsarcade.com/nintendo_vs_ppu_info.php

You want to use the RC2C03B or the RP2C03B PPU

Off?

Some people suggest that it is the REAL NES development pallet.

All of the screenshots for game boxes and Nintendo Power supposedly used that Pallet.

And it looks fine. The only difference I've noticed was that a certain brown color (like the one used in Kid Icarus' hair) is a lighter shade. Some of the grays might be different too. No big deal.
