What are the specs of the power supply you're using? If it's SNK official it should be a NEO-POW 3 or PRO-POW E. If it's a generic brand the output needs to be at least 9VDC (it can also be higher, like 12VDC) with negative tip polarity. A PAL Megadrive PSU will also work.

What's the picture like when you power it with no cart inserted?

Does it have a unibios? If so power it while keeping ABD pressed on the P1 controller and see if the picture remains black and flashes every 1-2 seconds or if some message appears.

Hi MKL and thanks for you interesting.
I've this screen (or similar) with or without game and i use a sega power.
I think the motherboard c'an't boot but why ?i don't know.
is it the Z80 or an other chipset ? i've got no sound too.

It's for a friend, so if i fix it, i think he'll be very happy.

I had an AES that did something similar looking on the screen. It had a bad trace going into the Sony encoder chip near the A/V jack.

karl: Have you checked continuity of all pins of encoder with a multimeter?

Plug in a pair of headphones and see if you get audio.

If all you get is a "click click click click" sound then the board is dead - stuck in watchdog.

If you get sound like it's playing a game then you have a problem in the encoder section.

Flashing? Sounds like you're using it on an LCD/Plasma that doesn't like the refresh rate. If so, try it on a CRT.

Turn up the volume on the slider.

Also that screen looks like your PSU isn't strong enough.

My AES had that same problem with the screen scrambled and no sound when I used a 9v 1.2A PSU, when I used a 9v 1.6A and a 9v 2A PSU it worked perfectly.

Click of death can be anything that causes the main CPU to not read the BIOS ROM and run properly. It usually has these causes: bad BIOS chip, bad trace, or bad Work RAM.

If you don't feel like tackling it yourself, contact MKL. He's in Italy and repairs MVS/AES systems on that side of the world.
