I just bought this copy of KoF2003 from Joeaverage and this is what I'm getting:
l_7c1b32c2eab84cda9baeb3041a39fb66.jpg

I have cleaned the cart, taken all other games out of my six slot machine, and tried it on every slot and I get the same thing. I tried it on my friends supergun and its having the same issue. Sometimes I can get it to play for a match or two before it de-evolves into the graphical mess you see here. I opened the cart to find a dead bugs exoskeleton and an M1 chip that looks like it was a repair. Could I be doing anything wrong or did I get a bad cart?

I think I may be on to something here, I decided to fool with it while it was in my machine and it seems to wobble a bit, If I would it towards the left (i.e. \ ) it works and the graphics clear up but if I dont hold it there it has the problem. I am going to try and tighten up the case somehow and see if that fixes it.

Did you clean the cart itself or just the mobo?

Yeah I'm thinking dirty cart. I had a World Heroes 2 that looked just like that before I cleaned it.

Joe has made right by me. He is an awesome seller.
I cleaned the cart quite a few times. The contacts really dont look bad at all. If I stick my hand in the cab and press top of the cart to the left the graphics clear up, if I let go, garbage city. I've tried cleaning it with everything I can think of besides like sand paper (which I have read people doing). How do you guys clean the carts contacts to really get them good?

Did not clean the mobo as I have no problems with my other 12 games. And yes I did try all my slots including removing all my games and even clearing my cabs memory.

For the cart contacts I use a pink eraser, it usually cleans it like new.

Its worth remembering that the M1 chip contains the tables to decrypt the C ROM tiles which is clearly going wrong based on the pictures. Is it possible that the pressure you are putting on the cart to clear up the garbage is actually bending the board?

Problem is I can put a little pressure and then let go and it works for about 1 min and then garbage again. I'm really at a loss. I have tried putting it in another cassing, cleaning it, and I even took a magic eraser to the contacts and same thing.

Did you try to use the boards bare? (i.e. No case at all..) It sometimes helps, and if it does it is because the boards are bent inside the case and the case itself needs to have some plastic shaved off to stop that from occuring. Never had it myself, but I have read about it here several times.. Make sure you put the boards in the right way though if you try.. Exoskeleton? Did you have the movie "A Bug's Life" recorded in there or what..?:loco: It may be time to clean the boards too and not just the contacts.

Haven't tried it boards bare, but I have put it in a a bust a move case that has not problems with bam is in it and I get the same issue. Even if I leave the case barely screwed (loose) I still get the same problem.

Take a magnifying glass and look around the M1 chip for cracked or loose solder points/joints

You may have too twist the board a little to see if anything lifts...If there is a repair wire, make sure it's making good connection also that it's not bumping another pin at it's solder point..

Can you post pictures of the boards themselves..

Can't seem to find any loose connections but then again I don't have a magnifying glass.

Tried it in a replacement cart I was sent and no go, it was actually worse the when in the original cart. Wouldn't even work when putting pressure on it or anything.

Pics sent. Thanks for your help guys. I think I've at least made some progress as if I basically bend the corner away from the chips bowing the board slightly it works. The pics I sent will have arrows pointing to the areas I have to put pressure on to get it to work.

The last one has arrows pointing to it. Basically if I put my finger on the left corner pushing away from the chips and the where the other arrow is I push the opposite direction (basically bending the corner away from the chips bowing the board slightly) it works and graphics are fine. I still cant find any separations in the chips and their solder points though.

Since you already tried using an eraser you need to clean the edge with sandpaper, don't use anything lower than 600. Just LIGHTLY sand the pins DO NOT sand the traces above the pins, after you sand it wipe it with a swab of iso.

The only other thing it would be is to reflow the solder which it sounds like to me. It's as if you have a broken cold solder joint on the PCB.

I'm thinking its gotta be a solder joint on one of the chips. I think I'm gonna invest some money in a new Iron, a wick, and some good solder and try my luck at taking off a few of the chips and re soldering them on the board. I haven't soldered in some time, prolly over 6 years but it would give me some much needed practice since I think I'm gonna do a cap kit to my monitor.
