I have a power supply in an Atomiswave cabinet that is doing the same thing. I'd be interested in hearing some responses as well.

to answer your why bother question...my Impress has a psu similar to an atx that is attached to the cab with special connectors that plug into the cab wiring so itd be a pain in the ass to HACK one of those into it...also quite unsightly

You, me, and everyone else with an AWSD... those godforsaken Wei-Ya PSUs are horrible. There was a thread on AO about a much better model Wei-Ya that can retrofits the old one easily. I can't remember what model it was though.

But yeah it's a tough dilemma, you can try capping it and see where it gets you, maybe camp out on YHJ for a few months and pray that a new one will show up, or screw it and buy an ATX or Peter Chou.

You just replace the PCB, keeping the cage with connectors etc. Not sure why candy cab owners thing the PSU is the whole cage and not just the PCB inside. Guess it has to do with being noobs and all that...

I had considered that MKL the problem is I would need a really small psu pcb then

I don't understand why some technically proficient people have to act like their shit does not stink. It's fucking annoying, to say the least.

Not sure if the Happ PSU board will fit inside of the Impress shell or not. Open the PSU and inspect the board for any signs of damage (leaking or bulging capacitors, etc).

it looks like they could fit....really tight though...anywhere to get em cheaper?

If the impress PSU is so small then it must be a low power one which is not surprising since Aero/Astro Cities have 5V/7A PSUs as against the customary western PSUs which are usually 5V/15A. The Japanese really are undersized when it comes to arcade PSUs (and dicks). You could try and look for an open frame PSU that has similar specs and size to the one you have.
Those Happ PSUs are often found on ebay for much cheaper prices (but if they won't fit it's not my fault) or here for $35:

You might want to check with Filmore Games in Japan. I bought a NOS Impress power supply about 2 years ago from them off of Ebay. Shipping won't be cheap, but it will save you the hassle of rewiring the whole power supply.

+1

Any that are bulging, have cracks on top, leaning over with the rubber plug blown out the bottom, or leaking oily looking electrolyte need replacing.

Additionally since it's not holding it's 5v steady you should look at the small electrolytic caps in the feedback section. You have some bad ones there too, even if they don't look it.

so much to my surprise, I opened up the psu tonight, powered it and started testing with my multimeter...turns out the 5v pot was shot. Lucky for me I had a replacement on hand....and now she's good as new!

Glad you could fix yours. I have a noob question. My psu on my super neo is dead and the reason I really wanted to get another original one was because the test and service buttons are on the same board as the psu. If I put on of those happ switching power supplies in the cage won't I need to install an isolation transformer as well? The cab does come with an a/c filter installed.

Not sure what you mean by the service and test buttons are on the same board as the PSU.. The buttons wouldn't be on a board.

There is no reason to use an isolation transformer with an earthed power supply.
