Hello, everybody.

As some of you know, I had a problem a while back with the convergence of the three colors (red, green, and blue) on my 50-inch projection showcase cab. Some members were of the opinion that convergence failures can’t be fixed.

It turns it that that is not true. Convergence issues can be fixed by troubleshooting and replacing components on the convergence board, or in the case, in another board, which controls the convergence board.

The board with the bad capacitors is circled in the pic below:

The bad capacitors look like the following:

Now that the capacitors have been replaced, the convergence is normal as it should be, as shown be the pics below:

So there is hope after all. :)

Technically I don't believe that was a convergence issue. Convergence refers to the three colors coming together at the same point. On projection TVs usually the pattern is a white grid and if any of the colors fall off that grid, you adjust the guns. It looks like you just had failure of the red/green stages on your set, or something along those lines. Either way, it's fixed and looks great.

It was a convergence issue. What I had was all three colors on the screen but not at the same point. On same games, I had ghost images of three different images (RGB) all near eachother but not on eachother. Here is an example of what I had:

My point is, though, that it is a fixable issue, and that I was in fact able to get it fixed.

Oh, those pics definitely look different than the others. It looked like you were only getting red signal in those early pics. Cool fix and a cheap one at that.

Oh no. It wasn't cheap. It was cheap in parts once we found out what was wrong, but I had to pay a television repairman to troubleshoot to find out what was wrong first.

I'm having the same issue with my Megalo 410. Im still waiting on the incredibly hard to find remote control to come in the mail so I can fix it and finally use my cab.

The remote will most likely not correct a convergence issue. If my information is correct, the remote will you help focus, adjust, or move (up, down, left, right) the picture. But if you are having a convergence problem, then there is most likely a bad component on the convergence board.

Well that's the weird thing with Megs. It's 100% opposite. I have knobs to adjust focus, up/left/right/down, and size, etc, it is the remote that is required for convergence.

It's a great lookin' cab, the Megs, but holy shit it's a pain in the ass to fix em.

Whoever designed these cabs that need remotes in order to be adjusted needs to be shot. Sure, having a remote is a good thing, but that shouldn't be the only way to adjust a cab. There should be a backup way to adjust it in the event the remote is lost/stolen/broken.

Oh my god I can't even put in to words how much I agree with you. This damn remote cost me $120 and I still don't even have the damn thing. I tried borrowing it from several people but all 4 refused. I even offered to pay to use it for a couple of days because my Harmony remote could have learned all of the commands and saved me some money but no one would lend or rent it out.

You bought a remote, but it still hasn't come in?

I have to defend those who wouldn't lend the remote or rent it out. I would do the same thing if I were in their shoes. I would want to protect the remote, lest anything happen to it, and I wouldn't want to take a chance letting someone else borrow it.

If someone were local, and I had a remote that would help them, then I'd drive to their place, adjust the monitor for them, and leave (with the remote), but I doubt that I'd ship the remote to someone in another state. Too many things could go wrong that could leave one without a remote (or a working remote).

It's still in transit, apparently.

I can agree what your sentiments but if you package it and ship it properly it would be well taken care of, and I wasn't about to slip away with the remote either.

I'm surprised that the TV tech figured out those capacitors are bad. Those caps are OSCON style, which aren't supposed to go bad. They must be the cheap Chinese version which are actually electrolytic caps in disguise. I usually look for bulging caps to see if they are bad, but these are the kind that do not bulge.
