As a matter of fact, this is still true. I've searched the forum and been unable to find a topic related to a technical issue I'm having with a 4-slot MVS, but when I try to create a new topic in the Tech Support forum, it tells me I lack the proper permissions. Is there a specific postcount I have to reach to be able to post there, or is it a matter of waiting several days?

Thanks.

Hey mods!

We've been having some issues where n00bs can't post new threads in Tech Support. Can someone please look into that and fix it or post what they need to do before they can post in Tech Support?

There's been 3 in the past week that have had problems.

We did institute a moratorium on starting new threads to thwart spambots (we've been able to cut down on them quite a bit, actually, so we're hesitant to eliminate it), but new members can reply to threads immediately so here's my thought:

Create a new member's tech thread: a general purpose question thread for those who can't start new threads to ask a question. If the question is really good the answer could be made in a new thread, and referred to by a link back in the new member thread. Explain those rules in the first post of the thread.

Maybe title the thread "(Can't post a new thread?) New Members Tech Questions Thread" or something like that to get their attention. This would actually allow the person giving the answer to make a really relevant thread title for the answer thread that might make it easier to search on both NG.com as well as on Google and other search engines.

What do you think?

[D'oh, I was fooled by the bump... but I'll contact the JMKurtz and channelmaniac and see if they like this idea]

it would be cool if for the first few days of being a member, each post is preceded by having to run the post through search, and forcing the new member to open each thread and make sure that his query has not been asked and answered yet.

Also if they claimed that they searched and couldn't find anything related then a mod does a search for the problem and there is an answer within the first 5 results then take away their thread creating ability in the tech forum.

I like it. The first post in the thread could be a primer on how to do successful searches on the forum. :)

Although I'm a n00b too, I like that idea. I haven't opened any threads regarding my first restoration project since I found all the information already by doing searches. I forget who wrote it, but I read in one of the threads that (and I'm paraphrasing here...) "everything Neo Geo's already been covered". I found that not only were the threads helpful, but seeing the members who excel in particular areas to PM for MVS decals, parts, and learning about fakes, mods, conversions, and repros. I found that reading the glossary, master list, and price guides was very helpful too, so what if the message about 'not having permissions' was changed (or added as a secondary message for those trying to post a new thread, almost like a warning label before taking them to the next screen) to something like, "Before you post a new thread, have you searched for your answer in the older threads yet?" What do you think?

I would, except that I still haven't figured out the search function on this site. It's not very easy compared to others and was broken for years.
