Hi,
Ok i bought a Jap Neo Geo Cd, came boxed all very nice, went and plugged it in, didnt have a game at the time so just turned it on, nothing, ... the red led is on, the unit is alive, but nothing happens. ok so i get a Game for the unit and put it in, turn it on, same thing... so

Th eunit is getting power i believe as the power light is on.

The unit has a game in it the door is close ( its a top loader )

The tv is connected ok, ive tried two sets of av cables.

The drive DOESNT spin, nothing happens in the drive.

I believe a CD type player screen should come on if there is no cd in the drive? this doesnt happen.

So any help with what might be going wrong would be appreciated, ive opened it and cannot see anything wrong in there ( burnouts etc ). I know there is a replacement kit for these things, but first i want to make sure its not something simple, maybe just the powr supply?

hope someone can help

Thanks

You're right, the first thing that should appear when you switch on the Neo CD is the NG CD logo and then the CD player screen (a short sound should be heard too) - it doesn't matter if you've got a CD loaded or not. Now I'm not a tech whiz on the Neo CD but the logo should load even if the CD drive is busted. Afterall the the Neo CD logo is part of the BIOS and therefore independant of the CD drive, but I truely don't know for sure since I never had a brocken Neo CD.

To test if maybe just the video/audio jacks are busted try this: Insert a game CD, turn on the machine, wait for approx. 10 sec, then press "start".
This should start the loading process, even though you can't see it on-screen. Now if you can hear your drive spinning you can almost be sure that your problem has nothing to do with the BIOS or the CD drive but rather something with the video/audio harness. (sounds like a stupid test, but it might be helpful).

Hmmm - powersupply...are you from New Zealand? What's the voltage you use - 220V?
If you didn't use a step down converter then you probably seriously damaged your Neo CD.

Sorry, that's all I can do...
Good Luck!

Hey,

thanks for the reply, so i tried the unit with two different av connections, one using standard composite video plugs and the other using a Neo Geo hom cart av cable ( i assume they are compatible? )

I'll try what you mention about the game, and see if i get sound, right now the screen is just black, something must be dead inside, but you would think its fixable...

can anyone confirm that if you have a dead drive the neo geo logo will still power up?

thanks

Also Yes i do have a step down, so thats not a problem, we are 240 V here, and ive got the correct ste down for japanese machines.

My suggestion is that you try to connect the audio plugs (white and red) to a hi-fi device to see if you can hear through it... You should heard a sound and a "clink" through the speakers when starting your NGCD even if it's no CD in it.

Also try to connect to the TV with a regular S-video cable or try to get a Scart or RF cable that fits in the central socket of the back of the console.

Good luck man, I busted my PAL Neo Geo Cd when trying to mod it to 60 Hz so I know how you feel... I have just bought another one and succesfully modded it to 60 Hz. Man that rocks!

Yeah i read your story... i too have a second machine on the way, so im gonna do some testing with it, see if i can determine exactly whats wrong and then go from there, i now the machine is doing something becasue when i turn it on i see the screen flicker and then just stay blank, someone suggested that the power packs for these things are crap as they have both a 5v and 10v supply, does anyone know what parts of the machine the 5v and 10v both power ?

how can i test that that point on the power pack are givng the correct voltage? im not an electronics wizz, but with a few points i can work things out.

Yep, im having the same problems with mine. I bought it off of ebay from england. Built my own power supply, AND did a full NTSC conversion, andi still dont hear the cd drive spin or get any sound or neo geo cd logo. Just a black screen. However, i am running the hookups through the RCA hookups in the back. Could this be the problem??? But still that doesnt solve the cd drive not spinning. I think that the problem persists in the instructions on how to do the mod. See, it tells you what to take out, while the picture shows another resistor that doesnt have one on mine. It says nothing for this. But just so u dont feel alone out there, i have worse problems with mine. Oh well! at least people are willing to buy it. GOOD LUCK! hope ive helped

mrhaboobi, you could use a so-called multi meter to take measurements of the output of the power supply's plug. It should have the same voltage as printed on the top of the adaptor.

Other steps would include opening your NGCD and peeking around for loose cables, dead soldering points or signs of short cuts.

Your console's problem seems to be related to the adaptor. Don't know why, it's just an inspired guess... Maybe you should test it with a generic power supply with the same voltage level than the real SNK adaptor... Arakon, hear me? What do *you* think?

Well im still no further along, unfortunately the neo cd unit does have a special power supply, its not very generic in that it actually supplies two different voltages to the unit, its kinda strange, ive got another unit comming, so i will test them both when it arrives , but id still like to try and fix this machine, i know shawn has a replacement part for neo cds, but when i tried to email him, he said post questions on this forum, but of course he has never replied, and wont tell me exactly what symptoms the replacement kit will repair.. anyone know?

The CD repair kit found in the neostore includes the CD drive, lense, and the drive pcb. With this kit you can fix burned-out lenses and the CD drive itself, but not problems concerning the power supply or chip failures on other pcb's.
