Japanese AES console adaptor

Does the Jap AES console need the 110v adaptor that came with it, or can you use different one(in a 230-240v Australian socket) as long as it puts the right voltage/watts into the console? The other option would be to use a stepdown converter with the Jap adaptor, but these seem to be expensive.
