Horrible Smokey smell.

Hi everyone,

I recently bought something from ebay (a Neo Geo CD system), that I have been totally looking forward too playing. I was so ecxited ripping open that package, unfortunately I was greeted by the strongest tobacco smell I have ever encountered. I'm not new to trading, I've got a decent amount of trades on here, gametz (over 100) & ebay (over 100), but this is by far the worst smelling item I've ever encountered. In fact, I had to move the whole thing out to the garage. I have already contacted the seller who seems like a reasonable dude & he has offered to give me a refund.

Is there anything I can do to lessen the offensive smell? Is this something that will get better with time? Thanks for your thoughts and opinions.

Jeff

You could try opening up the console, taking out all the innards and putting the exterior plastic shell in the dishwasher. It really shouldn't be that hard to get rid of the smokey smell. I'm a smoker myself and the smell is easy enough to get out of things

It couldn't smell that much. If it bothers you so much leave it outside for a day to aerate.

is the smell so bad it's detectable from the couch? I mean, you're not going to be playing with the console strapped to your chin...

Yikes! If I'm not mistaken smoke is bad for electronics and if it smells that bad I'd be worried/pissed. Kinda like with cars I never buy smoker's cars because the damage it could cause to sensitive electronics (and carpets haha) bummer. Maybe it will go away with time and not being smoked around anymore

I got this with a guitar I bought about 4 months ago from ebay. The smell has faded over time but I still smell it faintly when I play it. I guess the best you can do it wash the shell and hope for the best. The tar in the smoke means it tends to cling to stuff (especially plastics) like shit to a blanket.

The former owner of my car was a smoker, so I don't have to tell you how much the ashtray wreaked! I washed it with vinegar and water, and left it to soak a while.
Guess what? Now it smells so fresh, you'd think it was new.

You might want to try it on the inside of the console first, just to be sure it doesn't react with the plastic.

Hahaha god. When you're a smoker the smoke smells fantastic. When you're not, the smoke smells like absolute shit.

I say just man up and leave the shell outside for a day. Or just forget about it.

You're fucking lucky SNK made them black, if it was white you'd be looking at a brown console.

Option A:

Just buy a industry-grade detergent for cleaning smooth plastic surfaces, remove the cover of the console and clean it thoroughly from both sides, that should do the trick. If you want you could also buy a can of compressed air at a DiY store and blow out any tarry dust but pay attention to the fragile stepper sled and lense.

Option B:

Stop washing. Soon your body odor will outweigh the smelly console and you'll be a dirty but happy gamer.

Thanks for the replies guys, the unit is airing out as we speak. I may have to also consider 'washing' the plastic.

If there's lots of tar on it, letting it air out alone won't be enough.

Just soak the edge of a cleenex in pure alcohol and rub around on the cover, if the cleenex turns brown-ish, you should really consider a thorough cleaning.

While outside put a couple of fabric softener sheets under the lid (make sure to be careful with the lens). As a last resort take a towel and spray your favorite cologne a few times on it and rub the outside on the case.

Could be worse, it could smell like old bong water

When I get a smokey game, usually just airing it out for a few weeks gets rid of it (sometimes I stick it in the window between the screen and the inner window). I think in the case of a console, you should wash the outer shell and let the inside components air out for a while. If you wash it, be careful not to scratch off the logos.

Sorry but I could not resist this, too funny. Do you shit to bed a lot? Most of my blankets are shitless.

Oh yeah and to Jeff, I got some neo carts from bustedstr8 and he keeps his arcades and such in the game room, lots of smokers. After a while it just went away. Not saying it was the worst smoking smell ever but, if its not like covered in tar, air and time will help it.

I did wash mine too eventully, but not for the smell really it just went away over time.

Ive cleaned some nasty speakers and pool tables that were in bars for years on end, and ill tell you, im convinced years of tar CANNOT be removed. 12 times around, that brown, sticky shit still remains. Its terrible stuff.

I get a lot of weird smelling games and consoles off of eBay, and isopropyl alcohol does the trick. Just get a paper towel damp with it and rub (carefully) the entire surface. May take a few tries with the really bad smelling stuff, but it really does a good job cutting the odor and cleaning in general.

Pool tables and speakers are made of lots of wood which soaks up the tar, contrary to plastic where cleaning even the nastiest tar stains is possible with a good detergent. There are some specialist products that will wash away that shit in no time.
