Running MAME doesn't violate any laws anyway, using dumped roms in MAME, does.

Even then, the Neo Geo hardware and games are pretty much discontinued. I think the only thing left to do with the original hardware is MVS repairs in Japan. But I think that may have been stopped as well.

The only thing that cartridge is doing illegally is the use of roms. I don't know if roms from discontinued hardware means its legal to pirate, copy, share etc. But It would pretty much mean you're at zero risk of being taken to court over it.

Not necessarily. AFAIK as long as you own the physical ROM (i.e. own the PCB) it's ok to run. Not that this is realistic, but still...

Anyway, I think it's far more amusing that the guy said "The games are 100% arcade versions, not unreliable clones or copies." when many of the titles are hacks.

True, but most people running roms do not own the original hardware.

There's not much you can go wrong with now that its discontinued and nearly 20 years old.

And most people running original hardware would laugh at the idea of running the ROMs.

But, in my opinion, it's a point worth mentioning.

No it isn't, at least not in 99.9% of all cases where dumping a rom into a digital file is not a licensed way to use a program/game. Read the license of any piece of software, you are only entitled to legally use it in the form presented to you but any other aspect is up to the copyright holder, that includes different ways of distribution, formats, etc.

In practice, a company would never sue the legal owner of a pcb just because he has a rom of it on his computer, that goes without saying...

Oh, and there ARE legal roms out there, some companies dropped the copyright on some of their releases and they can be used for free and completely legal in mame or any other emulator.... of course that does not go for the hack cart mentioned in this thread.

Nope, Under the DMCA, you have to have dumped the Roms yourself to use it in such a manner.

Decrypting roms is also illegal under the DMCA. And any code written by use of decompilation or decryption is also Illegal.

Yeah, the dumping is allowable provided that you are not breaking encryptions/security systems to do so.... But using it in another manner is illegal. There are a few exceptions to both rules, but it is so narrow that it won't apply to most people.

Of course, I think that many coypyright laws and especially the DMCA violate Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the constitution.

Oh man...I forgot about the DMCA.

Pre-DMCA, I believe that (at least in the US) having a backup of software/music/whatever was OK regardless of the "license" (lol).

KOF 2002 is 20 years old now? Man does time fly!

I wasnt talking about the games, the hardware though, the fact that a bootleg cart was made for this system. It's using 20 year old hardware that is discontinued. You can't exactly go wrong.

Using it to play the games however, thats different.

I'm curious about the hordes of MVS multicarts that are showing up now a days.. How are they managing to stuff so many games in there? Do these boards contain some custom memory solution (considering most of the games listed are at the "neo geo max") and somehow trick the hardware into bank switching or what?
