The former SNK had offices in the USA, in Europe (UK?, France?) and Asia (HK?, Korea?) outside Japan (anywhere else?). So, in which of these territories did the Neo see realize its greatest popularity outside Japan? Hong Kong could be argued, in part due to all it gets for Geographical reasons, but I'm sure the other locales all have some potential to be in this "Top Spot."

Neo Geo was number 1 selling console and games in France for a couple of years.
And it didn't do that bad in other European countrys. And SNK only had a office in the UK. Although they had a official distributor in France named Guillemot International.

How did SNK kindoff falldown to this.. an underdog?? Were the games too expensive back in the old days? There games were great, better then any other company, graphics were far out. Strange..

The cartridge prices lead to the the Neo-Geo system's failure in America. My local EB
used to sell Neo-Geo games back in the day, and being friends with the Manager, he had
said that the Neo-Geo sold poorly because the system and cartridges were too
expensive.
They (EB) liquidated their Neo-Geo stock eventually, and some games were dirt cheap (I
remember Magician Lord selling for $50 when it normally retailed for $200 (remember
that ML was a new release then)). At one time, Neo-Geo systems and games were
everywhere. They had them at my local Toys 'R Us, Kaybee Toys, etc. Now you're
lucky if you can find a system let alone a Neo game locally!

I'll give you some reasons...
Lack of third party support.
The release of a B&W Neo pocket at the same time Color Gameboy hits.
The release of a Single Speed CD console in the era of PSX and Sega Saturn double speed
systems.
The release of AES and games 3 times the cost of new Sega Genesis / Super Nintendo system and games.
The release of the Hyper 64 technnology which turned out to be weaker than PSX.
I could go on and on..
The bottom line is mismanagement, lack of support(retail/third party),bad timing, poor planning, slow production and horrible consumer relations.

The same problem was here in Sweden. The cart prices where just too high. I know the people very good who imported the system to Sweden. They tried to lower the cart prices with placeing bigger orders and get discount from SNK. But still with prices around $145US for 1 game, killed the Neo Geo's commercial succes. Nowdays people are asking for Neo Geo more and more - according to my friends at one of Stockholms biggest secondhand/new Tv-gameshop!

Thats a mojor bummer. Meaby SNK should be working on better ports for other systems, and more ports aswell, it would bring them back alive. I bet many people would love to see a good Metal Slug port on DC,PS2,PSX. Last Blade 2 was a good port for DC I heard. Id say make some new ports.. And bring back the SNK 2D gaming. Like Capcom..They make lots of games a year. SNK should do that too meaby.

Distribution of Neos to places like Toys R Us and EB were only in certain cities. My hometown of Shreveport (third largest city in Louisiana) never saw a Neo in a Toys R US.

I live in a small town that at the time, bordered Metro Toronto, (now borders the city itself) and even a so-so chain called Compucentre had the Neo·Geo Gold System. They kept it on the highest level of the shelf, so I only got to look up at the box. Back then though it was just too much money, esp. for a 9/10 year old.

Down here the Gold system was sold at Babbages,Electronics Boutique,Software ETC,some computer place(the name escapesn me)
It's up in the Franklin Mills Mall to this day,I think Lionel Kiddie City even carried it before they went out of business. They even sold Neo Geo at this place in the Plymouth Meeting or King of prussia Mall beause I went to return a cart that i beat in about 45 mins and the guy accused me of using a Game Hunter Copier to copy the game

Do you mean the big bin of Top Players Golf games they had at the EB in Franklin Mills. Is that still there?

Noooo, that stuff up there is long gone. There is a computer place up ther, the name escapes me right now but they had a closeout on neo Geo stuff in like in late 94' or early 95' nI think Neo geames were going for like $25 at that time just to get rid of'em.
There's nothing up there now and all the game stores today are just 'COOKIE CUTTER' garbage, nothing like they used to be.

I missed the days that you can only see Neo Geo system and games on top of wall in Babbage's and didn't have money to buy any of them. I loved those days......
When I finally have money, it was the time Babbages tried to get rid of all SNK cart games and sold 50% off the original prices in 92/93 I think.....not really sure about the date.
