AES is the common abreviation for the HCS, the Home Cart System (dunno why it's called AES, because the AES name is featured on the CD system as well). MVS is the arcade version (these are carts that go into arcade machines... you need a converter to get them to play on home systems).

The debate shows up all the time, and I like to sum it up with "There's a reason why nobody has made an MVS->Home Cart converter".

Go MVS.

That wouldn't make much sense, would it? :p
It stands for Advanced Entertainment System instead.

AES rocks! Carts may be expensive, but the boxes kick SO much ass that it's not funny. Even with Shock Boxes, MVS carts pale in comparison to SNK-authentic cases. I would go MVS, but I don't have enough space. AES also equals a ready-made big screen provided your TV is of any size. Nothing like a wall of Neo AES carts. It's a sight to behold! :D

Console kiddies... <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />
You're not into arcade games, are you? You've never had an arcade board in your hands, have you?
Cases, Inserts, baggies and shitty "artwork" only appeal to you console kiddies... you should realize A LOT of people just couldn't care less about that stuff: if MVS had AES prices and viceversa, I'd still buy MVS anyway...

MVS doesn't take that much room if you have a supergun, in fact almost the same as AES. And you can play other JAMMA arcade games.

About the AES->MVS adaptor, it could be quite useful. When a game is just released the MVS is much more expensive than the AES, as the first is for making money at an arcade and the other is for home private use. So an arcade owner could buy the cheaper AES version of a new game and use it. In fact MVS and AES games aren't compatible in order to prevent that.
What happens is that after some time, arcades change their games so the old ones are useless now (they have completed their commercial life and the owner has hopefully recovered his inversion) and their price drops like a rock. Also some MVS games have lots of copies, much more than AES, so the price is based on supply/demand.
For instance, Metal Slug 4 is now cheaper in AES than MVS, while Metal Slug 3 and KoF 2001 are now cheaper MVS than AES. In some months MS4 MVS price will drop.
So MVS games start very expensive but drop a lot quickly, while AES start cheaper and then the price can go up or down according to its rarity.

If your after that real arcade feel then there is only one way to go.

Question is do you have space for a cab, if so you must get MVS, you will have no regrets (maybe some frustrations but no regrets)

MVS cabs may require a little TLC to keep things sweet, but dont let that put you off. You dont need to be a rocket scientist to work it out. Its easy as pie.

The advantage is real arcade feel and affordable carts: Metal Slug MVS $30, Metal Slug AES $1500.

I agree MVS is the way to go .
If space is a premium than get a Candy cabinet.
Theres nothing like the real look and feel of a cabinet !
On the otherhand Metal Slug on a 56 inch is awesome.

I would recommend getting the MVS system. Even though it may be a little more startup cost, in the long run, it is worth it. There is nothing like sitting in front of the cabinet and playing a great NEO GEO game! Especially in true RGB goodness!

AES all the way. Games are way easier to get and have nice looking artwork with them.

AES:
Pros: Nice boxes, compact system, extra features like training mode etc.
Cons: Costs alot, doesn't save high scores

MVS:
Pros: Way cheaper then AES, actual arcade controls, arcade cabinets look nifty, saves high scores
Cons: no portability, no fancy boxes, lacks artwork unless you buy the full kit, extra adapter needed to use memory cards.

Of course you could get an AES with a Phantom-1 converter to get the best of both worlds :D

AES. While I'd love to go MVS I can't play fighters for shit with a stick. I started playing fighters way back in the day with a controller and that's how I've stayed. If I want MVS I'll get the Phantom, that way I'll bridge the gap between both worlds.

If you you buy the right board you can have your cake and eat it too.
Meaning my MV1-F has factory AES controller inputs on it.also has stereo output and a headphone connector.
A few of the other boards do too.
One of these days I am going to grab a few AES pads and try it my self.
There are a few cons to the converter too , like needing a tight fit in your AES and the cost of one alone is around $250.00 to $300.00
Either way just make sure you have fun with it.

Actually, !Arcade! fixed the tightness problem in their new blue revision of the Phantom. It now works just as easily as inserting an AES cart whether it be on an AES with tight or loose slots. Again though, the converter does run about $300, but with the price you save on games alone, it more than earns it's price back in no time. Especially when you consider that the US MVS Metal Slug runs about $1,950 less than it's AES counterpart. So I say, if your on a budget and your a collector, go with an AES system with the Phantom-1 converter. After all, you get to make your own inserts for BB's amazing shock boxes.
