Hi Everyone,

What are your guys' feelings on the advantages or disadvantages of owning a Japanese AES or a USA AES?

What has your experience been with either one or both? What would you recommend for someone that is just starting out with Neo Geo AES? A Japanese or a USA AES System?

Thanks.

Same thing, different bios.

The only difference is language and blood colour.

So if you are good at japanese it doesn't matter cause if you put a usa game in a jap aes it will be in japanese and vice/versa.

A lot of the information on the Internet is not true. So I wanted to get your guys' opinion on the following.

I read that even after a Japanese Neo Geo AES System has been modded, switching to "USA" mode will be a hassle.

Is that information correct? Or is there a certain type of mod that would eliminate that hassle?

Is it any easier to switch to "Japanese" mode on a "USA" Neo Geo AES System or is the procedure exactly the same?

I also read that even after a Japanese Neo Geo AES System has been modded, the Memory Card Management Screen will still remain in Japanese (For those of us that want a Memory Card)?

Is that true?

Thanks.

The country it came from makes no difference if you put a Universe BIOS in it, which is the only region mod you need to do. With it, switching the region is as simple as selecting it out of a menu.

Get a Japanese AES. They are uncensored (without having to open up the console and mod it). You don't usually need to understand Japanese to play the games.
US and Jap consoles are both 60hz, unlike the Euro AES.
The Universe Bios defaults to the Euro region.
I think it's better to avoid mods wherever u can. The AES will probably last longer if it's not opened up.

Correct. That way games default to English language but usually remain uncensored (like the Japanese region). This does not affect the refresh rate, though. A JP or US home system will run at 60Hz regardless of what the bios is set to.

As for the system "lasting longer" if you never opened it, that's just ridiculous. Sure, if you screw something up, your system could be damaged (as with any electronics project) but otherwise, changing the bios will not adversely affect the life of the system.

Edit: of course the real solution here is just to buy a consolized MVS with a Universe bios and be done with it. As long as you get an MVS with a socketed bios, all you have to do is pop the old one out and put in the new one.

Hi Murray,

Any idea on that?

Thanks.

If you should ever decide to purchase a Phantom-1 or Super MVS Converter and have a desire to play Metal Slug X I would recommend a US system or JPN system that requires the 5volt power supply.
You'll have an easier time finding a US system with the 5volt supply than you will a JPN one. The earliest models of the JPN system required 5volts but most on the resale market today use the 10v supply.

You only want to avoid video and audio mods if your goal is to protect the integrity of the shell casing .The Bios Socket Mod(a must have) and LED are okay.
In regards to the AES lasting longer if it's not opened up is inaccurate. MVS boards are the equivalent of an exposed AES PCB and many are still functioning properly. The minimal maintenance may have been the High Score / Difficulty Level battery being replaced which doesn't affect operation if removed completely.

I'd say go with whichever one you want. One thing for certain is you'll want to at least get a debug bios added, if only to avoid the mega censoring in games like Metal Slug.

I didn't even know the memory card menu remained in a certain language. The only reason you'd want to go there is to delete items or format the card, and how hard is that to figure out if you were to get a JPN system? I've got a memory card for my system and I've used it like twice.. It doesn't really save a whole hell of a lot. IIRC the ONLY thing it saves is what level you were on, since these are arcade games that can generally be beaten in under half a hour that doesn't matter a lot to me.
