i went to funspot in new hampshire this past week while I was on vacation [about the 3rd time i've been] as most of you know, totally amazing collection of retro games.

officially the largest arcade in the world; 3 floors of cabs. does not have a single fucking neo cab in it.

two primal rage cabs though; you know, incase two people are playing on one, and you just cant fucking wait to get in there and tear shit up with blizzard.

Yeah, I've read before that there isn't a Neo Geo there. Funspot's explanation was that it isn't retro (made after 1990 or some crap) so they don't keep it around. That's pretty stupid.

But then, I remember people saying that the newer stuff they had was donated. Sick that they have a pair of Primal Rage though. Man does that game take me back to the retro days.

SNK was from the future, remember?

Goddamnit, your sarcasm makes me want to kick you underneath and inbetween your balls with a womens' sharp-tip shoe.

"The Future is Now".....with the MVS we had reached the Future of gaming. Arcade at home, memory cards, multi-player, stereophonic audio, VOICE!!!!!!!

snooty booty.

Most of their collection is based solely off donations. The Centipede and Millipede upstairs I donated a few years back.

Yes I'm a nub to these forums, came over from KLOV and Electricgrave got my lurkin ass to register :P

Update:

This weekend I was in the Laconia area in NH and decided to take a look at Funspot. The place is very nice and has a very friendly atmostphere. It's the only place in which I found both sitdown versions of Outrun, Afterburner 2, Thunderblade and Space Harrier all in one spot. The Discs of Tron and Star Wars cab was in good condition considering the age of the machines. Pinbot wasn't working at the moment, but the other pinball machines seemed to work like a charm.

It seems that the operations owner is always willing to accept a machine in good condition. A couple of months ago I spoke to Yuckmud about the posibility of either donating a cab or getting the parts for the machine. I've been thinking about either letting one go for a cheap price or possibly donating it myself should I move to the New England area. They have an SNK area within the arcade with Ikari Warriors and Guerrilla War. It would be nice if the area was blessed with both a big red and a goldie.

They were in great condition for the age.

Yeah, the reason they do not have a Neo is because the Classic Arcade Museum is a museum and they can only accept donations. Nick (Yuckmud) and I talked with Gary and they would gladly take a neo. Both nick and I also mentioned the possibility of Neo Geo tournaments at the next classic museum if they were to receive a Neo and Gary again at the time was all for it, especially since games can be swapped in and out for anyone going for a high score and people can bring their own games to show Twin Galaxies their high scores since form what I have heard, Twin Galaxies Neo scores are either lacking or being held by shotguners. Donations are good for tax write offs and you would get credit on the machine for the donation. Nick and I are thinking of starting a donation box thing for obtaining an MVS for Funspot. We would get a video with Gary and post online to let everyone know it is completely legit, as well as try to get any people in the classic gaming/Neo community to help add to the validity. If the majority of the people from Neo-Geo.com were to donate to the cause, we could get the donation frame to read from Neo-Geo.com.

Of course if anyone would like to downright donate a cab themselves, they could always go right ahead and do so (remember tax write off, the Classic Arcade Museum is a real recognized museum that runs on donations).

I put the suggestion up a few times about putting a collection together to get a Neo-Geo for FunSpot and people all ignored it, and since I looped it with Twin Galaxies, people kept talking about the high scores, then the cab.

Skat, said everything I would say. They can't get an MVS because it's not in the Museum's time frame (70's-87) but they WILL put it in if somebody donates one. Since it's a fully functioning museum your donation is tax deductible and if you want to donate carts or any extra parts, you can do that as well.

I wanted to see about setting something up like a paypal or having one of the better known members on the fourms set something up since I'm not really that well known here.

If you donated a cab, they'll put a plaque on the top of the machine with the history of the game and who helped donate it. Gary said he does want an MVS because of the rich history but as I said, doesn't fit with their mission statement.

If anybody wants to get something together to get the wheels going, please post here. I'd be willing to donate a game like Baseball Stars or something else.

They'll take anything and their willing to put it out. So if you guys want to get this done, lets do it soon for their next tournament in the spring.

What Gary basically said is not so much that it doesn't go with their mission statement, but rather that all games need to be donated. It is my understanding that they legally can not buy an arcade game for their museum, but rather have to take donations. How Funspot was able to accrue so many classic games is simply because they had most of them in storage. The original plan included the cut off date of 1987 (hence why Double Dragon 1 is upstairs and Double Dragon 2 is downstairs). I am guessing that in the paperwork written up to declare the classic arcade museum a real, gov't recognized museum, it states up to 1987 which it is my understanding that only games provided by themselves can go up to 1987. Donations to the museum can basically be whatever they are willing to take, and as stated above Gary would love to get a Neo for its rich history and importance in the arcade industry.

Well I say it is up to the Mass crew to change that! I'm gonna move some things around and see if I can come up with either a 2 slot or a 4 slot rev 3 to donate...I just hate to let go of either...man, we'll see. Otherwise I might just buy one and restore it for the place without sacrificing my personal units.

I think any organization for donating them a cab has to be better organized, i.e.:
  • finding a cab (a cab in the area would save a lot of shipping),
  • figuring how much per donation per person (i.e. telling people to "just donate teh cashz0rs" doesn't work on people who aren't very rich, you need to say "donate increments of ____, once we get ____ number of people we can get the cab")
  • play up the return on investment, here it would be the plaque (live in immortality in an arcade a handful of geeks around the world have heard of... forget the general public, its about impressing your peer group)
  • solicit key individuals --good fundraisers target people, they don't wait around.

Heck, my coworked found a nice 4-slot big red in good shape with 4 classic games for $400 off of Craig's List --in his own neighborhood, no less.

It sounds like this arcade isn't as good at keeping its stuff looking beautiful as the Pinball HOF in Vegas, but I still would like to go some day.

Yes, I agree we need to work out something better. I know a guy who has a six and a two slotter, but I don't know if he'd be willing to part with one and my one friend's boss has a four slot but I don't know if he sold it already.

They only have two people full time that fix the machines and the machines downstairs in the main arcade take top priority. Gary told me, "Do you fix a game that might make a few tokens a day, or a few tokens a minute?" He's got a couple of those redemption token pushers that rake in the money and if those don't work, their screwed.

Also, when we went up there they had been through a couple of school closings with weather and school holidays so the games downstairs were the ones getting attention and the games upstairs were beat up.

The other thing that sucks is a lot of the local people are assholes and beat the machines up if it eats their 11 CENT token. I saw a kid and a guy beat the hell out of a few games because it ate their tokens.

I had remember seeing a video on YouTube of a guy giving pinball tips and one of the first ones was putting the quarters/tokens in and pressing start. I didn't think people were that dumb till I went up to FunSpot.

I saw this middle aged guy plunk a few tokens into a pinball machine and he started pressing all of the buttons but the bright blinking START button on the front of the machine. He started to kick and punch a near 25 year old machine till he walked away. I walked up and played four free games.

If anybody wants to set something up better then just finding somebody willing to donate a machine, I'll be more then glad to help out. We'd also need to come up with something for the plaque to talk about the history of the Neo.

Primal rage is the shit, I use to hustle other snot nosed brats back in the day.

Still, regardless of the definition of retro, to have the largest arcade, or any decent sized arcade with no Neo cab is almost unacceptable.
