Memory Card - Do I need one?

Hi Everyone,

What is the purpose of a Neo Geo AES memory card? Will the memory card save my game progress so that I can return to it at a later date?

Does the memory card work with all Neo Geo cartridges? Does it work with Neo Geo 2D fighters? Does it also work with MVS cartridges plugged into a AES console using the Super MVS Converter II?

Where can I get a complete list of all of the games AES/MVS that will allow me to save to the Neo Geo memory card?

Do most of you AES console owners own a Neo Geo memory card?

Thanks a lot.

Hi ratson,

Thanks for the reply. Does the memory card save your progress in AES 2D Fighting games? Like can you close your AES console and then return to the last match you were in?

Does it work with all AES games?

Thanks a lot.

Yeah, it saves where you were in many games. The idea is that if you were playing a game in the arcade and died, you could save it to the memory card and resume it at home. It helps with unmodded home systems by effectively letting you continue without the 4 credit limit. However, it does NOT save score.

Hi GohanX,

I have a Japanese Neo Geo AES System. Does that mean that I have to look for a Japanese AES Memory Card or are all Neo Geo AES Memory Cards compatible with all Region Systems?

Thanks.

If you want to beat your fighters with every character and not in the mood to go through the entire game then you better get you a damn memory card. If you have magician lord or viewpoint, get a damn card.

Hi Mofus,

Thanks for posting this reply. Do you have a USA Neo Geo AES System or a Japanese Neo Geo AES System? Did you purchase a USA Memory Card or a Japanese Memory Card? How did you find the Memory Management Screen? Was it easy to use? Was it in Japanese or in English?

I am fairly fresh into the Neo Geo scene as well. Will you be playing strictly AES games on your Neo Geo AES or will you be looking into MVS games as well. MVS games are a lot cheaper but you will have to purchase a MVS to AES Converter to play MVS games on your AES System. The MVS converter runs anywhere for $180.00 USD - $250.00 USD.

Looking forward to hearing back from you and taking a look at the pictures and videos you took.

Thanks.

MVS - AES converters are a waste of money. For that $250 you could get an MVS board and build your own supergun and still have money left over.

It's kind of pointless buying an AES to play MVS games. It just does't make much sense, especially if you're just new to the scene. You may as well make it easy on your pocket.

It's not pointless to get an AES. What if you want to buy and play AES as well as MVS games? You can't play AES games on a cabinet or a supergun. Any mvs games that u buy for the mvs converter, u can use with a cab or supergun later on down the track.

Why would you need to play AES and MVS games? MVS has a larger library, only slightly though.

They are the same thing, $250 on a converter just to play cheaper games make no sense. Maybe if you're a long time AES gamer but if you're new then why bother? just get an MVS board.

Yeah the MVS versions are basically the same thing.. but u do have to avoid buying bootlegs.. None of the cheap AES games are conversions. The AES console and games look and smell better then MVS. Mostly I get my MVS carts from overseas, and even cheap ones are almost as much as a cheap AES cart after you factor in shipping.

Bootlegs are exceedingly easy to avoid assuming you know what to look for and have at least some common sense on who and where you're buying it from.

I would say you'd be hard pressed to find an early neo bootleg on MVS. Bit pointless on the bootleggers side of things. Carts like Garou or Waku Waku 7 for example are prone to bootlegs, they're not always cheap but I think most of them were made due to high MVS cart costs when they came out which makes sense. But hey I'm not saying they don't exist.

Look and smell better? Oh come on man, now you're just grasping for straws.

See, you still haven't justified that $250 converter price tag. I just think it's a whole lot of money for a newcomer to drop on a converter when he could have an MVS setup for less.

Well I could have gotten a consolised mvs.. but I would have had to make it, for it to be cheap. Are they difficult to make? I still think some MVS carts are priced too high for what they are.
I bought the converter when the dollar was about the same as the US dollar.
I just wanted a real neo geo.. to have a real mvs you need a cab, and that's impractical for some people.

Unless you plan on only playing Neo, consolization isn't really that great of an idea and tends to be expensive if someone else does it for you. Besides the level of skill needed to fit it all in and make it look nice.

A supergun can be cheap or it can be expensive, if you have an RGB monitor of some kind then it can be fairly cheap, under $100. If you don't then a converter board by itself can be easily $100+ for us in Aust.

Cabs are so damn expensive down here, a damn Sega Astro City cab will run you like 1100 in Melbourne. Even old wood cabs are sold at a high price. I just cry when these dudes in the US pick them up for $400-$500 a piece.

AES carts are more expensive than MVS ever will be.
