I went up to Funspot this past weekend and had an amazing time. If you're ever in the area, I would highly recommend making the trip.

While I was there I came across a game I've never heard of before: Donkey Kong 2! No, not Donkey Kong Jr. It was a game that was titled Donkey Kong 2.

The game was located on the "American Classics" floor, so I can't imagine that it would be some lame Hong Kong knockoff. The game was in a typical Nintendo cab form that era, and was blue in color. It had a blue marquee with the name of the game, and Nintendo written everywhere you'd expect it to be.

Like a moron, I didn't take a picture or actually play the game. From what I saw of the demo, it looked like a modified DK game. You played as Jumpman, and avoided obstacles just as you would in the first game. It did happen to have more elevators and fire barrels though. The layout was definitely unique.

I searched KLOV, and I haven't been able to find any info on it. Does anyone know the story behind the game? Is it a hack/boot? I would be surprised to find it at Funspot if it were. Did Nintendo release a DK 2?

Looks like I should have done a bit more research. . . Here's a video clip:

Quote taken from post on youtube:
"Yes, it is a hack. And yes, the cab is hacked too. It was made by a fan of Donkey Kong within the "social circle" of the ones who go to Funspot and hold the world records of many arcade games."
There you go.

It's actually a very good hack. The guy really got into the game code, and picked apart the original before making the "sequel". It's more than most hacks where they just change the characters, speed up the gameplay and small or useless tweaks. It really is a whole other game. So good in fact you would swear Nintendo made it themselves.

If you check over at KLOV, there are a group of guys over there making the following for sale in an effort to make the game look more official:

SN plates, new sideart, new glass front panels, and marquees.

From what I can gather, someone redid a DK cab with a full DK2 artset and took it to the recent convention in Cali and it was a big hit. Now everyone seems to want a "dedicated" DK2 cab.

If my tape wasn't stolen at FunSpot, I would have had a nice video with the guy that created it.

My friends over at retrowaretv.com got an interview with him. The guy's name is Jeff and you can get the game at Jeffsromhack.com

Pretty much, Jeff owns and loves Donkey Kong. He was screwing around with how to make the game freeplay and he started playing around with the code. He created some new levels and redid the one elevator stage.

You can buy the burned chips and they go right onto your DK board, so you can still play DK1 just by taking off the chips.

The game is hard as nails. I still can't beat the one stage with the conveyor belts. I was watching some of the DK pros go at it and they even have a hard time. You gotta get real good to learn how to get through the stages.

I like how he took out the kill screen, so you could play it forever. It's well worth checking out if you own a DK cab. It's very well done and it's worth some attention.
