I tend to like four better than three, myself. (Tee-hee, I spelled out my numbers!)
Three is great and all. But I can only suspend belief for shooting aliens for what seems several hours for, well, maybe a third that time before it just gets uninteresting.
Second, Four, I enjoy, because we go back to what seems clear-cut enemies. (Some Nazi-ish look alikes with all the fun of blowing up without the intimidation or propaganda.)
That is, until the end where there are guns that transform you into an orangutan and the enemies you find weren't who you thought, but human-like "Robot Masters" without special powers.
And then you're left with Dr. Wily's not-so-eccentric cousin; who only seems to be into making war-machines to pay his college debt before going on to his real life's ambition: playing Ronald Regan alongside enemy soldiers in the form of Mr. Chips.
But then, three is the last SNK slug anyway.
So if the decline in quality continues exponentially since it has including and since four, than by the time Metal Slug XX, 14, or +A Turbo is released, Trevor and Nadia will have returned to fight the mole men from beneath the planet who are all represented by mspaint doodles or some-such.
Only one-third trolling,
