Random question:

Should an AES display anything when it's turned on with no game inserted?

I get a scrambled picture with a buzzing sound.

Why you ask...I have no games to test it with :(

If it works it should come up with a solid blue screen when no game is inserted

This is what mine is doing with no game inserted. Does that look normal? I seem to remember the video going black and white sometimes like 10 years back. We only ever had problems with it after getting an S-Video mod/bios upgrade done though. That would have been probably a year after the mod was done. I can't remember who we sent it to. Would have been around 1999 I think...

I opened her up to check if loose connections and all of the solders look good, nothing seems to be shorting itself.

Mods - does this wiring look familar to anyone? No sure who originally did this for us.

Someone obviously followed the mega mod guide, as to why some people dont put it on a PCB to make it cleaner, I DONT KNOW.

But the problem in your picture could just be a simple switching of the chroma and luma lines since it looks like the lines coming off the CXA chip are switched going into the "transistor web"

On the caps on the CXA chip which is closest to the back of the Neo, the left cap goes to the left "web" and the right to the right but it looks like they're switched. Try switching them and also make sure the audio ground is separate from the video ground.

I get the same signal as pictured above with both the default composite video and the modded s-video. Would your theory still be correct? Or would it only effect the s-video?

Also, would you be able to draw a quick diagram in Paint overtop of my photo? I seriously have no idea which lines/caps you're referring too. I have limited knowledge in this area, but I can solder basic stuff...

If the video from the DIN socket is the same then it's something else. I would actually take all that crap out to see if it changes anything.

Can you take a pic of the lower left portion of the board? I'm wondering if you're using the correct power supply unit. Also, if you post the pic, post the output info from your power supply's sticker.

Do I have the wrong AC Adaptor? Would this cause the distorted picture? I have an AES cart coming next week so I have something to test.

Neo Pow3 sorry. 10v 1A or you can use a PSU with similar output.

Where can you find these 10volt ones? Or can I just walk into a Radio Shack and get a replacement one, as long as the connector is the same?

An early model Sega Genesis power supply would work. Those are 9v 1200mA. From radio shack, it would be catalog number 273-1612A

You'll need a 2.1mm ID / 2.55mm OD tip with center negative, which that fry's info didn't provide.

glad I asked. Think someone should take pics of the a/c adapter to help people make an educated purchase of a replacement, and maybe add it to the neo wiki.

I found the Radio Shack one we were using for some time. I must have forgot we had it. It's a 10volt 850 mA catalog number 273-1614. Tested it with the AES and I now get a solid blue screen, but with some flicker on the left side a bit.

Would this AC Adapter be safe to use with my AES??

The amperage may be a little low if you start adding accessories (multiple sticks, newer games that have more roms, super converter, etc).

The flickering could be a number of things -- your tv not liking that generic svid mod, or not enough juice, or something else entirely.

You'll know more once you try it with a game.

Got my test game today, KOF97. Used the 10v 850mA power supply.

Using the standard composite AV out the picture was flickering a bit on and off, then about 5 mins later it went completley black and white. Turned it off and then back on. Flickered again for a few seconds and then the picture was fine. It almost seemed like it needed to "warm up" a bit.

Then switched over and tried the modded S-Video and than worked fine too.

I have another Japanese unit coming hopefully with the original power supply so I'm going to try using that and see what happens as well. I guess this Neo wasn't lost as after all!

Mine did that before when I used an 800mA PSU, when I tried a 1A psu it got a lot better.

Just realized you need a pro pow E not 3, 9v, not sure if that makes much of a difference.

I just went to an electronics store, they had power adapters that had like 1amp and selectable voltage from like 4v up to 10v or something like that. worked fine.

I can confirm that yes, the $12.99 one will work. I bought one a few days ago and used it on my testbed setup.

http://shop4.frys.com/product/5348868

It has the 2.1/5.5 size tip.

I can't confirm the $9.99 one as they didn't have it in stock. I ended up buying the more expensive one.

Now my testbed for AES is complete. Controller, A/V cable, cartridge, and the 5v/9v power adapters.

I had anothe look at my AES because the video was going black and white again. It does look like the Audio ground and Video ground are going to the same point. Where should I move the Audio ground to on the board to try and fix this?
