Alright guys, got a couple of real toughies coming like a game of telephone from a friend of a friend. I'm looking for help in identifying two arcade games from the late 80s/early 90s:

1) Vertical scrolling continuous levels, platformer/action type of game with animals (or people with animal costumed heads) attacking with swords and staffs

2) Sidescrolling action game (like Turrican) where you go to various planets to shoot things

I know, pretty sparse stuff. Internet and KLOV searches have been fruitless, although I did find another guy asking the same exact phrasing for the Turrican-like game LOL! Any help in throwing out some suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Mikhail

Is it that Sega game I can never think of? The one where you pick all of those characters? I think one was a black guy.

Or Pacman.

sounds like China Gate

#2 also sounds like Xain'd Sleena / Solar Warrior to me, so I'll guess that. Which is pretty funny because before emulation I had recalled playing it but couldn't remember the name of it either. The only things I had remembered about it were the planets thing, and the fact that running into an enemy took off a shitload more life compared to getting hit by a bullet :loco:

I forgot about China Gate. So close to being awesome.

The pig character actually shows up in one or two other Technos games (Sugoro Quest for Famicom, and I think the sequel on the Super Famicom as well - but I don't remember specifically seeing him there). Strange cameo.

Thanks for all your help, guys! Norton nailed the Solar Warrior and I don't know how BBH pulled China Gate out of the closet :) My friend passes along his thanks as well. He used to play these at Scandia back in the late late 80s and was wanting to resurrect the childhood feeling.

Although as we all know, it's never the same playing it 20 years later. When I saw Pitfall II back in 88, I thought it was the bomb. Sigh...

Sincerely,

Mikhail

Xian is pretty shitty if you go back and play it...

It doesn't have many of the amenities that future platformer console games had..
