I'm making a supergun and I'm planning on picking up a vert shooter.

I like the look of Ketsui, Esprade and Ibara but I'm not sure if they're any good, Post your opinions!

I've got copies of Ketsui and ESPrade and can testify to their greatness. While Cave games are great they are also expensive, especially Ketsui considering it's age.

ESPrade is a great game and one of the most reasonably priced Cave PCBs out there. It's a blast to play with upbeat music, crazy bullet patterns and all the dazzling colors and effects you'd expect from a Cave masterpiece.

I heard Ibara is reminiscent of some classic Raizing games and have wanted to check it out but haven't yet.

Other notable shooters to check out:

19XX: The War Against Destiny
Air Gallet
Gekirindan
Sonic Wings Limited
Space Invaders '95

And pretty much anything else from 8ing/Raizing, Cave, Toaplan and Psikyo.

Vert

Ketsui and Dodonpachi are my two favourite of the ones I have played.

Guwange, OutZone. I liked Gundhara alright, too, even though it has its stupid parts (read: it's very gamey in an early 90's type of way). Spin-Kicking missiles is awesome.

I'll second The Chief on Air Gallet. I enjoyed it, and it's often overlooked and overshadowed by later Psikyo/Cave games. It's been a while, though.

Some day I'll have to see what this Ketsui craze is all about.

There are also other vert games you should consider besides "shooters".

Gunbarich, Contra, Gaiapolis to name a few. There was a cool, old, Konami game that was like space invaders. Totally enjoyable.

Then there are the Rotary games, and SNK's S.A.R. that can be played on an 8-way.

Lots of vert stuff worth checking out.

Hmm I see. I've got a quote from ECL in Hong Kong for a Ketsui PCB. It was 114 USD. That's not too expensive so I think I might be picking that up.

ESPrade looks crazy cool, only 148USD so I think it's definitely between Ketsui and ESPrade.

What about Batrider? that looks pretty good.

I would LOVE to get an Ikari 3 board but I'd need some way of setting up the rotary sticks.

Right now you have a bunch of people googling ECL and not responding to your post.

You sure it wasn't 1,140$?

The person who wrote back to me from ECL when I emailed them a list of PCB's and asked for the prices. It had $114USD right next to it. I MAY be a typo. Sounds like it is...

I will ofcourse check this.

The Raiden Fighters series is really good, especially Jet.

If you like classic shooters, one of my faves that you can pick up for cheap is the original Aerofighters (I bought one off ebay for $30 shipped).

Although the game that gets the most love in my vert cab these days is Contra -- that game is simply a masterpiece (although clearly not a vertical shooter, like you were asking about :make_fac:)

Well I've been thinking a bit about these PCB's and I've come to the conclusion that I want a vert shooter that hasn't been ported. Esp Ra De looks like it fits this very well and it isnt too expensive either.

Ibara looks great but its already been ported and why spend $150 odd bucks on a game that you can get for under $80 for the PS2. Just doesn't really make sense. And it's not like I'm a HUGE fan so it's justified.

Awesome game but it has a Saturn port and he's looking for a game without a port, how about Battle Bakraid?

Yeah I've played the saturn port of Garegga, awesome game.

Bakraid? how much does that go for?

Should be able to be found for around $150-175, I haven't seen one for sale in a while but then again I haven't been looking.

Check out The Sheep, a true goldmine for the vert shooter fan.

guwange, ketsui and dodonpachi. Ketsui was an acquired taste, but it truly is a great game. Would have loved to have kept it, but I don't like having that much invested in a single boardset. I'll get it again if the price comes back down to the $600 range. Probably wishful thinking, heh. Kept a ddp DOJ metal case to protect it, just in case ;)

Going old school and affordable...how about sky shark or twin cobra?
