So one of my friends came over with a Mame set up to put in one of my cabs, so we played some shmups and although I wasn't completely sold on it, I was beggining to have fun with some games like Dangun Feveron and Shippu Mahou, man it was fun, but I couldn't help but feel wacky about the whole thing.

I've played Mame before with games that I cannot find like Ninja Spirit one of my favorite games of all time, along with Raiden (I got the Board now!) R-Type and a few others, but never in a cab. The graphics looked good, but you can tell there was a skip or a hicup everynow and then.

My view on this emulator shit now is that although it is wrong, there are times where there's no other option. I guess as long as you actually apprecciate the game for what it is and don't keep switching games like a whore, 'cause you're judging games on the quick and not been analitical then is allright.

Most people that play Mame though can't apprecciate games for what they are, and it has nothing to do with money, is all about dedication to the game.

I just wanted to share my view on this very delicate subject.

This hasn't been a delicate subject in about 3-4 years. Arcades by and large are dead. Games that are "new" in the arcades aren't in danger of being emulated right away anymore.

Hell with CPS3 being emulated now, the whole MAME scene seems to have dried up. It's like conquering everest...what's left?

My big problem with mame is that for alot of people (i.e. people that generally don't own cabs) it tends to cheapen the percieved quality of the games. I get a lot of why the hell would you pay for something you can get for free statements from people that see my gameroom.

I look at my cabs as very entertaining furniture. I just love the way a wall of cabs look in my home.

Mame dosen't give me that. Plus if I was running mame in each cab that would be added computer upkeep that I just don't have time for.

With mac-mame I have to pry one of my many children or my spouse off one of the computers (generally 15 minutes to a half hour) then start mame etc. The desire to play games via mame has generally worn off by that point. Just a hassle for the most part in my case.

I'm glad you are starting to see the light :D

I've been playing Mame before you even knew what a Neo Geo was and I was playing arcades before you even knew what a computer was, so no light to be shun here man, but yes I did enjoy it.

It's still a delicate subject 'cause it's worng no matter how you look at it. 3 years, 10 years it will never change wrong is wrong. I don't want to sound like an elithist, but your comments sound a bit "cheap". Don't patronize me with dull shit like that.

I can’t say I’ve ever had anyone walk into my basement and tell me that collecting arcade games are a waste of money when you can get them for free. 99% of the time the first reaction is “wow” followed by ”man I used to play this all the time”, and finally “how much do these cost, and where can I get one”. The only people I see make the MAME>real thing argument is online.

Personally, I converted my MAME cab to alpha 2 because I would play a game for a few minutes then switch to something else. After a while I just started to get bored with it, but I do think MAME is a great compliment(not a replacement) to any collection.

what pisses me off are the people that destroy nice classic games for MAME

I like MAME. Obviously, it's preferable to have the real thing, but MAME is handy for laptops and portable units. Whenever I travel, I have some form of MAME with me.

Simple as that.

How about I patronize you with the fact that "elithist" isn't a word? In terms of the "wrong is wrong" idea... I've never seen a single arcade company that is still in existence vigorously pursue a crusade against emulation. The truth of the matter is that by and large they don't care. They made all the money they are ever going to make on arcade hardware when they stopped selling the arcade boards. Even with MAME in existence virtual console and game compiliations still sell as well as they are ever going to...and why is this you ask? Because arcade game emulation is about as niche as arcade gaming ever was. The general population simply doesn't care to have 30 versions of pac-man installed on their computer. They'll certainly play a flash version once in a while or buy up an XBLA arcade game for shits and giggles, but they generally speaking aren't going to go trolling ROM sites looking for updated sets that contain the missing PROM file they need to make Pole Position run properly in an unintuitive piece of software. This isn't at all akin to music, video or even console game piracy, because arcade gaming is not mainstream. Outide of us...no one cares.

This forum represents a microcosm on the internet. We care about arcade gaming, we own arcade cabinets, we follow the scene. The true "wrongness" of emulation occurred when SNK was still producing arcade games on a semi-viable platform and they were being emulated right away. As people who cared about SNK, we recognized this hurt our hobby.

Now though...its pretty moot as SNK has moved on to arcade hardware that probably will not be emulated anytime soon. When it does get emulated though, and I believe eventually it will, the "craze" of emulation that existed a few years back will no longer be there. The scene is no longer is edgy or fresh and the games that are being emulated are pretty niche (as arcade gaming has by and large tanked) thus the only people left to care are us...and we already either own the hardware or decided that the hardware isn't worth owning. So who exactly are we hurting again?

ps: calling my comments "cheap" and "dull shit" isn't a very persuasive argument. In fact, I'm not sure it qualifies as a reasoned response.

True, my response was a hyberbole.

I own buriki one and I still wouldn't mind seeing it emulated. I also wouldn't mind trying out the gun and driving games as I will never have the hardware for them.

2nd and 3rd gen Cave hardware.

You can't deny that shit.

Oh, but I can. I have no doubt that CAVE makes some killer shmups, but as I suck balls at them I personally don't care if I get to play them for free on my PC. I'd still be curious to see them, no doubt, but I'm not up nights trolling MAME forums hoping that the break-through happens.

Shmup-gamers are an even smaller slice of the hardcore arcade addicts out there. Seeing as 95% of the shmup games nowadays never even make it out of Japanese arcades (until the secondary market) arguing that emulation of these games is going to hurt arcade gaming is like arguing that me reading freeware books online is going to hurt book publishers. I'll buy something that is new and moreover available to me, but if I don't have the alternative, who cares where I get the data from?

Of course you weren't arguing the merits of emulation, only that there is stuff out there unemulated..and to that I agree..I can't deny it that shit. Just wanted to further prove my thesis to the "elithists" on the board.

You really arnt that much older than me Chris. I was using a computer when I was 2 or 3, so you'd have to have been playing arcades by when you were 8. Which I suppose is reasonable, but not guaranteed!

I've actually never had anyone go on about being able to play games for free with MAME when they see my collection and cabinets, they just thought it was cool and played on.

On cabinets I'd rather run true hardware. Once in awhile I'm not home for extended periods, and emulation on my laptop makes it a little easier to be away from my collection.

Listen; you can make fun of my poor english, that's ok everyone here knows that it is my second language and although I should be better at it, sometimes I simply can care less.

I'm no saint and I've done plenty of things that are not considered right, but sometimes I enjoyed it and sometimes I didn't, however the idea of wrong and right has allways been clear. You can dress it up however you want, you can make fun of whatever I say, but that doesn't change the fact that playing games without paying for them is not right wether the company is pursuing your ass or not.

The funny thing here is that you know this to be truth and it shows in that little sermon you seemed to be very intense about, however you're right about a couple of things no one cares nowdays about what happens to roms and what not, but that still doesn't clear the fact that you are using someone else's property without their concent and wether you apprecciate the game or not you should at least have the balls or common sense to admit that you are indeed "wrong".

I don't have to persuade you for nothing, my point is not a point, is a fact and you know it no matter how much you try to justify it, so be free brother and cry on someone else's shoulder. I need no explanations from you.

But I am, for startes I was playing Pac-Man and Galaga back in 81, now think about that. I was playing with "Logo" and "Banner" when they just came out for PC's and I was just learning about "Wordstar" before there was even a windows OS, and for the most part I did all this things before you were born, I'm not mighty proud of it, as a matter of fact I shouldn't even be saying this things as it makes me look super old. Shenanigans!!! Hey! At least I don't look it at all.

I am generally OK with MAME. Even if it is playing without paying, you're not able to pay the companies anymore. Buying PCBs second hand is exactly the same by this logic since the company doesn't see the money from these second hand sales

One second, let me go find my moron to English dictionary...

I think jdd1510 summed this up succinctly. You aren't taking money out of the hands of anyone....with the possible exception of people selling boards second-hand.

There are no more arcades to really go to.

Even if there were still arcades...they probably wouldn't have the games in them that MAME emulates.

And most importantly the companies that make the arcade games aren't losing a dime over me or you playing MAME. In fact, the smart ones capitalize one the fact we even still remember the classics by offering updates like Pac-Man CE or Space Invaders Extreme.

Is playing emulated games "wrong"? In the grand scheme of wrongs...it rates in the very marginal department. You aren't profiting off of it and you aren't taking money out of the hands of anyone.

I think the more important question to ask is why you even felt the need to post in the first place that you played emulated games and felt a little guilty about it on a message board. No one really cares. Hence the sermon. You claim to be "super old" in your last post....well I guess you didn't get the "super" wisdom that should normally accompany it.

I don't know where do you get off, but just back off with your excuses and your attacks, you feel good playing mame then fine, as for who cares about my mame affair? Apparently you do care enough to act like an arrogant prick. There's many degrees of wrong this is well known, playing Mame would be per say a "feeble" level of wrong. You want to validate your doings, perhaps you should save those speeches for yourself. As far as your concern for enlightening me with your view on this, I'd have to say that your wasting your time.

My opinion is solid, if you don't like it, then don't dwell on it, move on and be at peace with whatever it is you find worth a while. I've never claimed to be wise, but those who do like yourself are far from it, so spare me from your nagging.

BTW, the last post wasn't for you, it was for a personal friend and the whole reason this Mame subject came into play, so don't thread where you can't see as we're just busting each others balls.

God fucking damn! why are people like you so fucking obnoxious???

Because people like you are so god-awful stupid.

BTW..public forum postings are just that, public. Go back to moving that turtle around in LOGO...I think it might be more your speed.

Good enough, now go drawn on your infinte wisdom and let my opaque mind at ease. Your nagging is just too much for simple folk like myself.

Note: I've played mame and enjoyed it, I consider it a very usefull tool, but I'm not saying that is right to play games for nothing, a little dedication is just my way of paying respect to the games I love, if you can't understand that then we're done here.

I have 3 active arcades within 20 minutes of my house.

Unless you are playing a version of mame that just plain dosen't work, then all the games in these 3 arcades are availbale via mame.

To clarify my earlier statement, I have people over (my wifes friends husbands) that look at the game room and generally all have the same response about mame being free, a computer taking up less space then cabs, etc, etc. All as if I haven't thought of this. All I can say to them is either you have the bug to want to own arcade cabs / PCBs or you don't. I do.

My FRIENDS on the other hand come over and are just blown away by the game room.
