Here are my predictions
Group A
Portugal
Turkey
Group B
Germany
Croatia
Group C
Italy
France
Group D
Sweden
Spain
pretty straightforward except for Turkey and Sweden. You may expect Czech and Russia to make it to round two, but I don't.
Round two I expect to see Spain knocked out by Italy or France. Croatia to get knocked out by Portugal, and Turkey to get knocked out by Germany.
Some explanations -
Portugal is going to play the sexiest football in this cup. CR17 is in his golden year. Carvalho, Nani, Nuno, Deco, Quaresma, Simao, Bosingwa - Portugal is a lot better than people are crediting them, but this is because...
Italy and Germany are favorites in a huge way. Problem is that Italy, with all its power, is kind of shakey to me. Cannavaro is out, and now Buffon is the captain, which is cool in a Dino Zoff kind of way, but it's a huge loss. They don't have amazing firepower here. It's a counterattacking team, but now without Nesta (retired from international play) and Cannavaro (torn ligaments).
Germany is a funny team, in my opinion. I don't like Lehmann. Apparently neither does Arsenal anymore. I don't like Arsenal either. The one thing I like on Germany is Mario Gomez. Klose will score a bunch of goals against Poland and Austria, then be quiet the rest of the tournament as he shuts down against good teams. Podolski will likely be bailing the team out instead of Klose. Frings and Ballack will likely be carrying the team on their shoulders. People will say Schweinsteiger's name just because it sounds funny.
As for Sweden, this is probably one of the most offensive teams right now, even though it looks week on paper. Zlatan goes without saying, but they also have Kim Kallstrom, who is a lot like Lampard, except younger and without the beergut. Rocket footed and can play the entire midfield. However, some things aren't nice here, Ljundberg is probably still too injured to play a full match. As such, Russia, led by manager Guus Hiddink, may move forward to face Italy once again. But still, Sweden cannot be underestimated. They are not easy to beat ever.
Guus Hiddink and Italy have a strange history. His Korea team knocked them out of WC2002, then Italy knocked out his Australian team in WC2006. This one man is Italy's biggest rival in my opinion.
This weekend Portugal will probably tear Turkey apart 3-1. Czech will draw Switzerland.

Hey, that was a nice first Euro 2k8 matchday.
Switzerland - Czech Republic (0:1):
Hmmm... overall the Czechs have the better and more experienced players but the 0:1 against the Swiss was pure luck. In this match, Switzerland was the better team but they really have to work on their offense and precision. Oh, and I really feel for Alexander Frei, captain of the team, EM 2k8 is over for him before it really started... same shit happened to Koller two years ago. Switzerland would have deserved to win this and the Czechs could do better... ...MUCH better.
Portugal - Turkey (2:0):
Portugal won as expected but IMO Turkey did a good job in keeping Portugal's star players at bay, specially during the end of 1st and beginning of 2nd half. Portugal kinda lost the focus from 45: to 60:, then increased the pressure again and consequently scored the first goal, Pepe's double-pass goal was really amazing. Anyway, Turkey had some nice chances on their feet but didn't make it through the well-placed Portuguese defense. Overall, Portugal has shown their favorite status quite nicely.
.
I'm really looking forward to the 2nd match of today: Germany - Poland. There already were minor riots last night between German and Polish fans, the atmosphere is heating up with every minute that goes by, you can almost grab it.
We'll have a EM party tonight at my place with barbecue and beer, hope the thunderstorms cease by then, at the mo it's raining cats and dogs over here...
As for my predictions, I hope for a 2:1 for Germany. Poland SO wants to win this match so this is going to be rough.

I think the Poland Germany game will be very tight. Germany just barely pulled off a victory at the world cup 2006 and both teams have improved quite a bit since then. This will definately be the best match so far in the tournament.

Germany - Poland 2:0. Podolski's the man.
Good match, relatively fair/not as rough as I expected. Lehmann and Mertesacker did a good job at destroying the Polish chances IMO, they seem to be in tune now, I was slightly worried about that after the last test match.
Tomorrow will be another great matchday with two "killer group" events, looking forward to Holland - Italy. Oranje always was and always will be my 2nd-fave team after Germany so I hope they'll make it. Will be tough but I think it's doable.

Germany played phenomenal football. Podolski makes scoring seem so easy. I can only hope Klinsmann will give him a regular spot on the Bayern Munich squad next season. Poland made a couple of glaring mistakes but other than that played alright. They have the talent to progress from the group.

Couple of things
Podolski plays well internationally, not on the club level. May need to change his club.
Oranje haven't played sexy football in years (since 2000 right).
Mario Gomez was a let down. Obvious he has incredible talent, but he missed some real chances.
Germany was not trying hard. Poland were playing their asses off. This was apparent from the beginning. The difference in skill is phenomenal.

Yep, our lads are in good shape, that's for sure. According to Ballack, quote, "we never had such a long and tough training before", and it seems to pay off.
One of the most remarkable players besides Podolski was Clemens Fritz, aggressive, quick, precise and fearless, that's how I like it. He just has to make sure not to overdo it, that was the reason why Löw took him out and sent in Schweini instead.
Poland improved a lot since 2006, Leo Beenhakkers did a good job here. They're on a good way, next stop is Austria come Thursday, won't be that difficult for Poland I guess. Just like the first line of the Polish national anthem says: Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła - Poland has not perished yet! :)
About Oranje and sexy football, maybe it's not South America-sexy but definitely Central Europe-sexy... they have a good team and very good players who have found a nice middle-of-the-road style between artsy-fartsy Ronaldo footy and good old pressing and fighting, and that makes them unique over here IMO.
First match today will be Romania - France. This is France's "year one" after Zidane so to speak, let's see how the equipe with oldies like Makelele and Thuram can cope with that. Oh, and don't write off Romania too soon, they sit in a very tough group now but have some very talented players (Mutu, etc.) that aren't on the same level as some of their French colleagues but are still hungry, something that can't be said of some French stars...

I disagree about Netherlands still playing sexy football. When Overmars left, sexy football left the national team as well. Now they have VDV and Sneijder who are technically sound, but not sexy. Kuyt will never be a great footballer. RVN can only score in the box, and will one day be compared Kluivery for prolific striker with dumbest luck. I see no hope for this mish-mash team.
In the case of Romania, I'm going to write them off because France is still a really good team.

1st half of Romania - France is over... France is playing in safe-mode and the Romanians rely on defense and the occasional counter, read, it's a quite tactical chess-like match so far.
I don't get why Domenech put Ribery on that strange position... seems like a waste to me.

So... the match is over. Boring 0:0.

Italy can afford to lose a match, as long as they get points on the next two games. Honestly, I got knocked on these two games today. I wrote off the dutch and they surprised me. I wrote off Romania and they, I dunno... the French played bad. Romania is still not doing shit in this tournament.

Holland played a great game. They looked a bit shaky in the middle of the second half but composed themselves enough to score one more. This game along with the France/Romania draw makes group C even more difficult to predict.
The final score could have even been larger, but make no mistake, Holland first goal was a CLEAR off-side.
Even if it ended 3-0 , the match would have been VERY different if that goal wasn't hallowed.
Anyway, the dutch deserved it WITHOUT question. They seemed the "italians" tonight. Congratulations.

I agree. It was a terrible non-call. I felt like the Italians were being bullied by the referee the moment Toni was yellow carded. Then Zambrotta got carded. Suddenly it was clear that the Italians weren't allowed to win this one. They were basically ref'd out of the game.
When you see your team getting carded it kills your momentum. When you concede a goal it kills momentum. The refs decided the momentum. Not the teams.

Not sure wether they can afford to lose a match in THAT group, things may tighten up in the end and the goal difference may be the decisive factor, then this 3:0 might haunt them.
As for Romania, IMO they played better than most people thought they would, it all depends on their next match.
Atro,
there wouldn't have been much difference today, off-side or not. Italy played worse than Holland and lost, that's really all there is to say.

I don't know if he would have helped. The french just played really bad. Anelka has been out of his mind for a while. He at least seemed like he wanted to play more than in the Chelsea final, but goddamn some bad decisions of his... He's truly shit.
I have to eat my words.
Holland 1st goal is valid.
That is due to a rule that refers that a player who's out of the pitch without the referee's authorization counts as if he was in.
Panucci could have been sited in any of the stadium's bench that that goal would still be validated.

I thought that might be the reason for the non call. It's good to see that Italy have no excuses for that goal.
there's also a strange thing in this tournament.
All the teams that lost their match, haven't scored.
Lack of luck or not, we're still awaiting for a match with more than one side to score.
Let's wait for Group D to see if it happens in these 2 matches :)

The most funny thing about that is that most of the journalists don't know that rule and will pain the newspapers as that goal was illegal and will ask for the ref's head.
Unfortunately for them, it's as legal as the 2 others.

Day 4 - Today's matches:
Spain - Russia
Greece - Sweden
Russia plays quite well but I guess Spain will make it. Either 2:1 or 1:0 for Spain.
Greece - Sweden will be fun, the Greek are still high on hope and enthusiasm, Sweden will have a hard time with them. It's difficult to predict this one IMO, maybe 1:0 for Greece or 1:1.
it is the most even group of all.
it's hard not only to predict the scores but also who's gonna make it to the next round.
By Hiddink's words, Russia falls to the weakest spot, but it might just be a tactical move to release pressure on his players.

Yeah, I read Marca in a daily basis ( more than once a day to be true ) and they are already singing so early. That's basically why when "la roja" fails, people get frustrated because they're always making VERY HIGH expectations on their squad.
I said a few days in a thread here that Spain is playing a splendid football. It now leaves them to prove if they can keep climbing the ladder higher than previous tournaments, since every spaniard ( well, the most criticizing ones ) don't believe them to get passed quarter finals.
Half time Greece - Sweden.
Well... ugh... that was the worst first half of Euro 2k8 so far.
The champion does not play champion-like at all, the Swedes really have a good chance to beat them tonight.
Reahgel and that greek team really stink.
It's so boring to watch a match where the defenders ( 3 of them !!!! ) spend one ENTIRE MINUTE passing the ball themselves without any will of attacking.
I really believe they will struggle sooner or later. Their 2004 miracle won't happen twice...

Well-deserved 2:0 for Sweden there, the Greece game was a disgrace, a real shame for the current euro champions. If they keep on playing like that they'll be out after the first round.

The Spain Russia game was incredible. Yeah, Russia got spanked by the furia roja, but they played pretty well in the first half. Zhirkov was really fucking good.
Villa did wonders. Sad to think how much more money Valencia will get offered for him. No fan of los che wants to see him gone.
The Sweden Greece game was ok. Actually pretty boring if it wasn't for two super lucky goals. Did Greece get outplayed? No. Did Greece play terribly? No. Greece had a solid defense but Zlatan found the one hole. The second goal by Hansson was a joke. Hansson probably didn't know he scored until 5 seconds after. It was a mess. Sweden are going to get chewed up by Spain if they play like that again.

C'mon man, playing a la France is not good football, and Sweden isn't a top favorite, unlike Greece.
How can Greece be a favorite? When was the last time a team won back to back Euros? Never? Sweden did not play that good today. Up until Zlatan's cracker, the commentary would agree that the Greece defense would close up any openings within a split second, and it really seemed to be the case. What Ibra did wasn't normal. His shot came out of nowhere, and to get that kind of power on a kick like that was, really, insane. I'm sure that the Greeks are going to watch this one over and over and think "horse crap. horse crap. horse crap." That game could have easily been a draw.
As for Giuly, his glory days are over. He's ok for Roma, but not for France. France's best player is Benzema. Benzema scored on Manchester, Barcalona, Rangers, and plenty other teams that are better than most national teams in this cup. I just wish he'd have shown it in the last game. Fuckin Gomis.

Charlie,
Greece has a favorite status because they are the current Euro champs, as simple as that. Their game yesterday was indecisive, overly strategic, timid and counter-based and that's a style that may be cool for the old men of France but Greece can do much better. I'm pretty sure that Rehakles wasn't happy with what he saw. Yeah, the goals against were no lucky goals, more like a logical consequence of their timid game and lacking defense.
As for France - IMO Domenech is a major part of the problem, he's doing Le Bleus no favor with his strategic setups. There was no prob with this when Zidane was still around because he always did his own thing and thus had a positive influence on the rest of the team... maybe his absence is the reason why France looked like a flock of scared sheep against Romania.
What they need is a two-player striker team, and Ribery should be part of it, not rot in mid-field.
.
Day 5
Czech Republic - Portugal
Switzerland - Turkey
Hey, something tells me this will be an exciting fifth day of Euro 2k8. The first match seems doable for Portugal but well... I know the Czechs (lots of them played or play in my home town team 1. FC Nürnberg), they improve with pressure and can do things in high-profile games they can't in lesser ones.
Switzerland - Turkey will be interesting because they still have some things to settle... Turkish football fans are very proud and emotional people, the city of Nuremberg will be full of cars with Turkish flags and thousands of fans shouting like crazy if they win.
Xander Crews
06-11-2008, 11:20 AM
France did have 2 strikers. Benzema and Anelka. And Anelka blew all the big chances. It can be said thzat Benzema also missed his shots, but he was far from the problem.
What works best with Benzema is a 4-3-3. Ribery on the right wing, put Nasri or Govou on the left wing. This is the kind of set up that saw Benzema scoring throughout the Champions league this year, and in Ligue 1 (Ben Arfa on the left wing, Govou on the right, Juninho and Kallstrom as central midfielders, Toulalain as defensive mid).
A lot of people say that Henry should be playing. I think it would be great if he does, but Henry was injured, and also just came off his worse season in years (every Barca player just had their shit season, as they finished 3rd place after spilling the cash to finish 1st in both La Liga and Champions League). So even though Henry is a great player, I don't know if he has the hunger to make the sniffs right now.

There's a dark shadow hanging over the Swiss team, someone or something does not want them to win.
And now, according to UEFA, the match between Turkey and C.Rep. , if drawn and have the same fairplay ( aka bookings ) numbers, they have to tie break with PK's after the 90 minutes since Switzerland cannot make it anymore.
Obviously, in case of a draw.
I guess the germans are more likely to want Turkey than the czhecs ( I'm assuming they will end in 1st place in Group B ).

Very weak stuff from the German squad. I always thought Lehman was a terrible choice and this outing gave me even less confidence in him. Ballack, Klose, Lahm were virtually invisible. Sure there is, the problem is Joachim Löw doesn't want to take a chance with a young guy. Robert Enke, Rene Adler, Michael Rensing. All could stand in goal for Germany and I'd have a lot more confidence in them. Lehmann was a bench warmer all year in Arsenal. I foresee Lehmann failing in goal at Schalke next season as well.

06-12-2008, 04:51 PM
Löw bets on Lehmann's experience, that all there is to it. Neither Enke, nor the others have that. There were bigger problems today than Lehmann, defense fell back to their old mistakes (gaping holes, slow reaction) and most others were too timid to try anything beyond set-piece footy.
Well... thanks to the successful penalty kick, a draw would suffice for us come Monday against Austria. Not that I'd want our lads to play safe, shouldn't be necessary anyway.
the austrians have just shot themselves.
they could have easily be winning by 3-0 in the end of the 1st half.

I can't stomach pk's, even if my own team isn't involved... the German pk's last World Cup were HORRIBLE for me to watch, that shit so pure luck and guesswork. The old golden goal rule was crap as well but still I'd prefer it over pk's any day of the week.
Maybe the fact that I mostly played as goalie during my childhood and youth adds to my pk problem.

PKs are bullshit, I agree, but for some reason a lot of people want to see games end in PKs. I think that the reason for this is partly because this isn't a regular occurrence outside of a tournament's knockout rounds, and the other reason is because people don't care about the teams involved. I never like to see games end in PKs, and especially finals. The 94 world cup is still a bad memory. Watching Baggio miss scarred me for life.

Turkey vs Czech Republic should be a good game to watch.
I hate PK to decide a game winner. Everything should be settled in regulation or extra time.
Speaking of Germany's PK, do you notice that Germany never miss any PK (every single player scored) in World Cup since 74, Tak? Check the history and you will find Germany always win in PK shootout in WC.

Man, that was a real battle, the Czechs missed an almost sure-fire victory. This is what happens if you feel too safe and just play defensive to keep the current score.
Great, now the Turks in my hometown will party and shout at the top of their lungs throughout the night... gah.
Too bad... the Czechs are out now, as is Switzerland. The 2:0 against Portugal was nice but well, that was the Portoguese B or C team, even though the Swiss looked good during the last 20 mins. Deserved or not, it was a good way to end Euro 2k8 for them and coach Kuhn.

Yeah, I know the statistics but that doesn't change the fact that I'm always nervous as hell. My father had the same problem, he even left the room during PKs. Losing by PKs is the worst possible way to end a match, I mean, just think about how the players feel like, they trained hard for that special day for months if not years and then a random shot or a wrong 50:50 decision of the goalie throws them out of a cup in less than a second. BULLSHIT.
Of course there's no way around PKs... I mean, you can't play extended time forever and the golden goal rule is crap so PKs are a dirty but effective way to end a game once and for all.

The Turks really started out playing it safe. I though they were lost right from the start. Once they got some confidence, and a little urgency due to 2 goals, they really showed that they belong in the next round. What a great game.

The Czechs were stunned with 2 late goals by the Turks. We have to give lots of credit to Turkey.

Losing in PK is very heartbreaking. One of the most memorable match was Argentina vs Yugoslavia in the Quarter-Final of WC 1990. Yugoslavia was down by 9 men and they fought for the whole game. During PK, they were leading 2-0, but they failed to score further in PK and lost to Argentina.
I remember Argentina got to the Final by winning a few PK shootouts that year with a back-up goalie No 12.

Actually, the team you don't want to meet again is Romania. Italy and France are looking washed up. Romania is playing like they deserve to be in this tournament. If Oranje throw tomorrow's game only to face a legitimate threat in the semifinals, that would be ironic poetry.
But in reality, doesn't matter if Oranje win or lose tomorrow. They will face Spain in the semis. It will be a good game. However, I fear the best game of the whole cup was CR vs. Turkey. Arda Turan is really going places. He's going to be bigger than Basturk.

In the other game it's a shame to see Poland fall but they not once played like they deserved to be in this tournament which is the exact opposite of what their qualifying campaign was like. At least they don't have to qualify for 2012 so we'll see them again.

Day 11, one day to go until the semis -
Today's matches:
Holland - Romania
France - Italy
Let's see how the Romanians handle this one. Holland already is on a high anyway so they'll probably play another great match but well, as I said a few pages back, don't underestimate Romania...!
France - Italy is always special, current world champion against the vice-champ, many of the players know eachother, will be a "family meeting" of sorts. I'll root for Italy in this case.
EDIT:
Atro,
I agree with you to some extend, the Austrians played bunker football and that's something Portugal won't do, they will play more open and offensive and thus the German game might be a little more open and combination-oriented as well. This simply was not possible agains Austria, sometimes the entire team built a wall of defense around their goal area and only lured for counter chances. The fact that they played very rough and literally to-the-bone didn't help either. That was rather uncool if you ask me.

I don't know about giving them the shaft but if I was van Basten I would play the bench today. Why risk getting players injured or suspended from second yellows or red cards. I know that if Romania were to beat the Dutch today then the French and Italians would blame van Basten and the Dutch squad but they have no one to blame but themselves. Netherlands doesn't owe anyone any kind of result.

You're right. On the same token, Italy is Totti orphaned. People say he's not really important in tournaments, etc, but if you watch him play, and see the level of defense he draws, you understand how Italy was so good on the counter attack. Anyhow, I'm glad De Rossi got to put points up. Shitty goals don't exist, not after the tournament. Now they should put in Aquilani, and play De Rossi where Pirlo was. Put in Perrota opposite Aquilani. Then you'll have a good midfield.

Greece - Spain

Greece is out already so Spain probably will come up with a B team like Portugal and Holland, I guess this won't be a very exciting match but let's wait and see.
Russia - Sweden will determine Holland's opponent in the quarter finals. Here's a full list of all qf matches:

Portugal - Germany
06/20/08
Croatia - Turkey
06/21/08
Holland - Russia/Sweden
06/22/08
Spain - Italy
The Spain - Italy match is a classic already, will be very interesting to watch. As for our match against Portugal, well, we defeated them 3:1 in the third-place match of WC 2006 so perhaps we can do it again, would be all sorts of awesome but it's going to be tough as hell. Portugal will come up with anything and anyone they've got, we'll see the A+ team tommorrow. I hope Poldi is fit for the match, wouldn't be cool not to have him around when the Portoguese attacks come in. Klose isn't too hot at the mo it seems and Löw does not want to resort to Kuranyi for some reason. Perhaps it would be a good idea to send him in against Portugal.

Heh, thanks God we made it. After being robbed a totally legit goal by the referee in the previous match, we surely deserved to qualify for the final stage of the tournament. We did with a very well deserved 2-0, and that's for the better. We played a very solid soccer, totally dominated the first half. Penalty Kick call (and red card) was 100% correct also. Nice match overall. Too bad for many goal shots missed by Toni, hope he'll have a better aiming eye (and a bit more luck) in the upcoming matches! ;)
A couple of key players will miss the upcoming match with Spain due to double yellow card though. No Pirlo, no Gattuso. Not easy.

Rino has been ineffectual, not just no, but all season too. I'm very surprised that Milan is so loyal to him. I would have transferred him to Bayern Munich when tehy asked for him a few weeks ago.
Pirlo is going to be missed, but frankly, it means De Rossi is going to start without question, which is a good thing. Pirlo tends to be a perfectionist, which hurts the dynamic of his game. He can be very invisible for a while.
Italy should also play Cassano. Yes, he's hard to control, but that goes true for both sides of the pitch. Cassano could really mess things up for Spain. The only problem is getting over the fact that he's a massive cunt.

The Dutch did play the group of death and not a bunch of scrub teams like poland and austria. But we'll see. A lot really depends on the counter attack with them. They make De Jong shadow the striker, which leads the opponent to bring up the offense and stretch the resources, then the dutch score.
Or one could say that it helps to get an offsides goal (that technically wasn't, but the rule wasn't made for what happened with Italy), then yellow card the victim team until they shut up, and watch the referee battered team lose disgracefully. Peter Fröjdfeld should be shot for his terrible calls.

Let's put it this way, we have cut back our expectations quite a bit. After the "summer dream" of 2006, a wave of euphoria swept through the land which brought the team through the qualifying rounds. At first we were called favorites, now we're more or less out of this circle which at the moment consists of Portugal, Holland and maybe Russia.
The team seems to accept this new role from what I've read, IMO that's a different thing than being "content to leave the cup". Löw wanted them to reach the quarters and it worked but they're still hungry for more, even if it doesn't look like it. Portugal is a damn strong opponent for every team, be it Holland or Germany, so losing against them wouldn't be half as shameful as a defeat against Austria which would have sent Löw straight to retirement.
Ah well, so what, bring 'em on, we're ready.
Oh, and the decision to give Löw a penalty for "shouting at the fourth official" by the UEFA is the biggest bullshit I've ever heard. Now the coach of a team under pressure will have to spend the entire match on the backseat and is not allowed to speak to his lads... FUCK YOU UEFA!!

Okay, now the next match will determine our semis opponent, either Turkey or Croatia. We still have a thing to settle with Croatia so it would be cool to meet them again. Then again, Germany - Turkey would be da bomb.

I agree with you, times are different and futbol in Pele's day wasn't the same as it was in Maradona's day much like it isn't the same today. If anything futbol gets more complicated and harder with each and every coming year, IMO.
Pele was a great icon for futbol too I won't deny that but I can't say better than Maradona, I'm Argentinian so it's impossible for me to judge him above Maradona much like its impossible for a Brazilian to say Maradona was better than Pele. lol the blind love for Maradona is hilarious. Fact is, Maradona is known in the football community, but Pele is known even outside of it, much like Beckham.
And so there lies the problem - the success hit Maradona while he was still maturing and it destroyed him. So we go back to CR7, and how his early success needs some failures to keep him hungry for more growth, more evolution.

You're out of your mind. Football teams rise and fall. Newcastle is crummy now, but a few years ago it was the cat's vagina. Napoli back then had more than Maradona, it had Zola, who was one of the best goalkeepers of all time. They spent big cash to bring in Maradona, and a lot of other players.
If you think Manchester United feel any differently about CR7, it's because they've been successful throughout history.
And why do you want to talk about Boca Jrs vs. Riverplate? Do you want to talk about Inter and AC Milan? Roma and Lazio? Manchester United and Manchester City? Juventus and Torino? Come on man. Think I've never seen a good game because I don't live in Argentina? Neither do you.

Second day of the quarter finals, today's match will determine the semi final opponent of Germany:
Croatia - Turkey
As I said before, Turkey would be all sorts of awesome. We have a large Turkish population over here, matches between Germany and Turkey are always very special.
.
A word on Maradona, he was a gifted player and the heart and soul of his team, that's for sure. However, I prefer the English and Central European fighting style over artsy-fartsy footy any day so I never admired Maradona or made a saint out of him like some people do.

I like how South American and us European football fans are so noncelant. "These Europeans just run back and forth, there's no play". "What's up with all this kicking the ball back and forth in the midfield in South American football, ther's no action". It really adds some spice to the world cups.
I'm happy Portugal is out although they weren't as bad as last time, they just can't handle a smack in their face (which is why I diddn't think they could beat Greece in the final four years back), and they are really not playing that sexy if you ask me. Congratulation Germany, you did it again.

It's unbelievable how come people still tries to compare Maradona to Pelé...
Pelé won 3 out of 4 World cups and that is a Record which will NEVER be beaten in our lifetime. NEVER.
Pelé scored much more than Maradona's.
Maradona's might have scored a splendid goal against England in 86, but he's not comparable.
Pelé can only be compared to Eusébio and Di Stefano.
Maradona's in the Van basten league ( which was a hell of a player ).
As I read above, arguing with argentinians about Diego Maradona, I still don't figure why they take him so much as a God... He's nothing but a bad example to anyone in the world with his drug and alcohol addictions...
And before I get flammed... yes, he was a hell of a player.

I have to disagree here. If anything, his struggle with coke and alc showed quite clearly that he's not the futbol god people made him out to be but a normal human being who makes mistakes.
In this way, I find Maradona more interesting than Pele, the latter is a bit too politically correct for my taste, his über-human football skills notwithstanding.
Still, my football heroes have different names... Gerd Müller, Paul Breitner, Horst Hrubesch, Johan Cruyff, Zico, Uwe Seeler, to name but a few.

Brazil not depending on Pelé or not still does not make him inferior to Maradona.
If Brazil did not depend, Santos did. And Santos was the best team when he played there. There was no Nacional Montevideo, Peńarol or Boca that could compare at that time too.
I'm not only a casual football supporter that only cares about it when majors competitions comes every 4 years, so go figure...
As for the comments about River Vs Boca, the rivalry is just stupid because their fans behave mostly like animals and there's always riots at every derby.
And don't come to say it's casual , coz it happens every year ( sometimes with deaths )
A super match where fans act like savages does not grant it the title for the best derby.

You know, Brazil is the main worldwide potency football wise for some reason.
Unlike in Argentina where Boca only is rivaled by River Plate and very occasionally by Estudiantes de la Plata, Independiente or even Velez Sarsfield, they have Santos, Palmeiras, Săo Paulo, Corinthians, Grémio Porto Alegre, Flamengo and Fluminense to compete with. They have to share... they have more competition.
That statement is as ridiculous as Comparing Celtic with Manchester United... Celtic rivals only with Glasgow Rangers, thus has twice as much championships as Man Utd.

Argentina beat Team Futbol in 1978 on Argentinian soil, brazil can never claim this only Germany and Argentina can and Brazil came in second place on their own soil World Cup 1950 by losing Uruguay.
& in 1986, do I even have to say why or don't you all already know :lolz:
You are moronic.
I only support my team and my country. I couldn't care less for the others.
All statements were just on a comparison level. Don't get blind.
As for your title in 78, in the military dictature, everyone knows that championship was a bullshit lie.
A NON-FANATIC argentinan friend of mine says the same. He's the first to admit that the suspicious 6-0 against Peru were combined to leave Brazil out of the Final vs Holland.
Brazil didn't went through because of that bullshit arranged match in favor for the hosts.
Want to proceed to 86 and tells us how that magical "hand of god" led Argentina to proceed ?
Tell me a tournament won by Argentina without controversy. ^^
You simply can't.
I'm done arguing with you. It seems I'm talking with a brickwall.

LOL what a fucking opinion.
Turkey beat out a Croatia that outclassed Germany, while Turkey was down on men. Their second string goalie was phenomenal. As stated during the game, Austria hasn't seen this much action since the Ottomans fought the Hapsburgs back in the Battle of Vienna in 1683.
It will be a great game. The pressure is heavily on the shoulders of Germany now.
That was quite possibly the greatest soccer/football match I've ever seen in my life and the extra time and PK had enough drama for 5 Super Bowls and World Series. I'm still pulling for Germany to win it all, but if in the semis they get the works, it can be said that it's really no one's business but the Turks.

Anyone can be a fan of Boca Jrs. You live in the US dipshit, not Buenos Aires. So what happens when BJ wins a gam? You probably just say "that was a good game" and go to bed. You have probably never experienced living in a country that won a championship. You can just say "when I was a little nino, my daddy told me about Argentina winning a world cup."
I'm real impressed with your knowledge of the game.
I bet if I was to ask you who Turkey's best player is, you'd have to wikipedia it. Maybe even google it.
You see this shows how a lot of you know nothing about futbol, it all begins on the club level and that is a fact or do you think they just wake up one day and are the best futbol players in the world.

I didn't get to watch, and it's no fun watching the game if you know how it ends. :(

Day 15 -
Holland - Russia
Third day of the quarters, today the current top favorite Holland meets a courageous (and very young) Russia. The Dutch haven't made any glaring mistakes in their matches so far, their style is compact but agile and of course they have very dangerous scorers. Russia's coach Guus Hiddink knows van Basten and the team quite well, he was the Oranje national coach from 1995 to 98.
Oranje's success is overshadowed by the death of Khalid Boulahrouz's baby daughter Anissa who died shortly after birth a few days ago. My heartfelt condolences go to Khalid, his wife Sabia and the family... may the little angel rest in peace. The Dutch players will wear black bands in memory of Anissa in tonight's match against Russia.
.
As for Turkey and our semi-final match against them come Wednesday, the Turks are quick and real fighters but from what I've seen last night in the match against Croatia, they lack precision and technical finesse. Overall Croatia was the better team, the PKs were pure luck, just like the late Turkish goal, what a blow for Croatia... ah well, that's football. The Turks are quite dangerous now, they burn red hot and are 101% motivated to give our lads a hard time. Still, I believe that Germany will come out 1st if they go at it like they did against Portugal.
EDIT:
This thread is about Euro 2008 and not South American futbol, thank you.

I hate pk shootouts, the best team always looses. I hope to see Germany beat Turkey only because they have a better side. Today's a new day a new 1/4 final and anything can happen, both Italy and France created chances against Neterlands so I'm sure this Russian team will to.
